Manga compatibility with Wence is:
No manga to randomly pick. |
I know there's several series that are wonderful that I still recommend for others to watch even though I disliked watching them. One of the strongest examples is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - an anime I'd recommend for most to give a try (though I gave it a 3) since I do recognize it as a great anime.
When I watch anime movies my expectations are always lower than what I'd consider normal. Trying to entertain me with what could be an amazing story within 2 hours I believe is a difficult task that I haven't seen completely done perfectly yet - so I'm more willing to push past certain elements that would otherwise ruin a normal series for me.
I'll be getting into manga soon - open for any recommendations to read first (would prefer an anime I have watched if there's a novel or manga form for it).

Oh man, there are so many awesome moments of MoD. Especially the part with The Girl Who Gets Her Head Blown Off (her unofficial name in the MoD fanclub). Sudden random head disappearance.
And then they take her back to the hospital and the doctor says "We couldn't save her..." NO REALLY? YOU COULDN'T SAVE SOMEONE WHO HAD THEIR HEAD BLOWN OFF?
No even more than that, what did he try to do to save her? Give her CPR? Glue the head back on?

18. Millennium Actress
27. Toaru Majutsu no Index
29. Zettai Karen Children
30. Mars of Destruction
I can't really recommend Index or ZKC. I seem to be the only person I know who likes them, and I felt like showing them some love.
Mars of Destruction is... uh, well. Have you ever seen Plan 9 From Outer Space? MoD is the Plan 9 of anime. I highly recommend it. It's only 1 episode long and you can download it here.

GTO seems pretty good so far. I worry about it getting too repetitive, but if it manages to avoid that then I can see it becoming a great series.

Oh yeah - advance warning. I'm going to bet on you not liking Ichigo Mashimaro. I didn't like the series until after I had watched the full series plus all of the OVAs. The characters have a way of growing on you.
Also, Miu is adorable and not at all annoying, damnit! Keep that in mind.

Ha, ha - no - your opinion of Noir is pretty understandable, actually. I even posted about it in a topic called Flawed shows that you really like.
There are some really good episodes (6 was one of them, I believe), but a lot of them are well... bad. Not so bad that I have to stop watching, but yes, pretty bad. Like a cheesy action movie.
Personally, I like the excessively dramatic music (liked it in .hack//sign as well - and it's the same composer, funnily enough). If you aren't liking that factor, prepare yourself because they play either Canta Per Me or Salva Nos in every single episode. Sometimes both of them multiple times in one episode.

Glad you enjoyed Skip Beat! It's a series that surprised me quite a bit - based on the plot description and the first few episodes, I thought I might not like it much, but (as you know) it worked its way into my heart and my top 30 list.
Woah, you finished DMC, too? Jeeze, you're a speed demon. How did that one go?

Yeah, I'll try to be on AIM tomorrow so I can finally put it to some use. Didn't you want to discuss Sword of the Stranger at some point? Anyway. I'd get on now, but I need sleep. :\
I'm curious as to what your 10 would be... Mushishi? Perfect Blue? Vampire Hunter D?
If it's one of the Kara no Kyoukai movies we're going to have a fun discussion about that. (Advance warning: I hate KnK, and the 6's I gave out were grudgingly bestowed)

Skip Beat is a very different kind of humor than Azumanga Daioh. Whereas AD often takes the "lulz random is funny" approach combined with slapstick, Skip Beat goes for more concrete jokes (and lots of non-verbal humor). I love the facial expressions in Skip Beat - the exaggerated ones, the normal ones, the subtle ones - awesome facial expressions.
Where Skip Beat really shines is in Kyoko's character development, and that takes a while to show. I'd say to give it until episode 6 or 7 and then drop it if you're not digging it.

The series definitely could have used about twice the number of episodes it got - especially to flesh out the world a bit more. Like how in the world did the government manage to pass two absurd conflicting laws which put the country in a constant state of civil war? And what stops one of the two factions from taking over the entire country, since there doesn't seem to be a real police force or military?
That aside, I found the characters to be pretty believable, and it's definitely a character driven piece in the first place.
Now if only the light novels would get translated into english... I'd be interested in reading more of the story.

Toshokan Sensou!
That's one that I wouldn't expect everyone to like, but I personally thought was pretty endearing.
I'll be on AIM until I go to sleep, so if you happen to be up late we can chat.

hahah, I liked over-dramatic-narrator-guy in Kaiji a lot more than in One Outs. Mostly because a lot of the time I didn't fully understand what was going on a lot of the time in Kaiji, so the narration was useful. In One Outs, he beats around the bush for like 2 episodes straight while you're constantly screaming "It's the drums! It's so obviously the drums! gagh!"
But yes, both series have the same director. Same with Akagi. So you might want to put Akagi further down the list if Kaiji isn't catching your fancy.

As expected, Spice and Wolf was great. Thanks for the recommendation!
Been a few months since I sat down and watched an anime straight through. Good stuff indeed.

Spice and Wolf looks effin fantastic, and everyone I've heard from has given a glowing review of the series. Don't know why I haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe I'll pick it up now.
Yeah, I take the opposite strategy as you with new series (or at least, I have in the past. haven't been watching a whole lot of anime recently). I watch an episode or two of all the new anime, and then drop the ones that don't seem promising. I find it kind of fun to discuss series with people as they're airing.
Hope you don't mind me dropping you a friend request. Should be nice to share favorites once in a while.

Wow, it's rare to find someone who agrees with all of my top picks.
8 - Kaiji (highly, highly recommended. It should probably be higher on my list)
11 - Skip Beat
12 - Detroit Metal City (also definitely watch this one. Hilarious stuff)
17 - Ichigo Mashimaro
18 - Genshiken
20 - Toshokan Sensou (Not the Girl Who Lept through Time, though that one was on my list for a while)
21 - Lucky Star
22 - Mobile Suit Gundam (the original series. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is also very good, though I'm not finished with it yet)
25 - Correct! It is Fist of the North Star
26 - Also correct! Serial Experiments Lain
28 - Minami-ke
Don't take my top 30 as something set in stone, though. Depending on my mood, these anime could also easily make it in:
- Baccano!
- Akagi
- Hajime no Ippo
- Hidamari Sketch
- Kaiba
- Berserk
- Ouran High School Host Club
- Hunter x Hunter
- Millennium Actress
- 5 centimeters per second
- Toradora
As for Mushishi - it's not in my top anime list because I don't feel like the anime adaptation did the manga justice. You'll notice that it is indeed in my favorite manga, so it seems that our tastes once again coincide.
Happy watching!
