Noticed you're already halfway through Kare Kano. Just be aware that the show suffers a fall in animation quality in the last few eps due to... well I can't remember what exactly happened, but I think Evangelion's director got fired by the mangaka and soon afterward the show got cancelled prematurely but they still scraped together whatever resources they could to get to episode 26. Like literally cardboard cutouts on sticks and images from the manga. I actually still enjoyed those episodes though, but I'm probably an anomaly there.. can't remember the eps much anyway so maybe I'd feel different if I saw 'em today.

Awesome. Saw it so long ago, can't remember much about it except gore and faintly the MC. And I liked that there were some large time lapses / setting changes between each ep.

You'll find that character in Maria-sama ga Miteru, Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata, Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate, probably Bakemonogatari, and I think Mnemosyne.

Veteran MCs you'll normally find outside of anime where the target demographic isn't so young, but Porco Rosso (Ghibli w/ Miyazaki directing) has him, and the rest are maybes since my memory sucks: Black Lagoon (not the protagonist), Sword of the Stranger (a bit younger than what you might be looking for, but I think he was weathered), Mushishi (I found it boring, and ditto on probably being younger than your target), One Outs, and Jormungand.. sort of.

Besides Little Witch Academia, the only anime that reminds me of Harry Potter and its traditional magic is maybe the first season of Zero no Tsukaima, though you've already seen it. I guess there's The Irregular at Magic High School, but it doesn't have that "haunting, magical piano/flute music" or atmosphere. Probably the main reason I rated it so high is because the protagonist topped my favorite characters list here, beating Yuna from Final Fantasy X who's been at the top ever since I joined the site almost a decade ago (and Yuna topped my list because she's probably the best skilled/top-tier yet still pure, nice, and humble character I know). And oh, I think it does have that always have each other's backs thing too, though they're siblings, but the sister has enough of a bro complex that MAL lists the Romance genre for this show. And speaking of siblings that always have each others backs: No Game No Life.

Anyway, neither does Magical Sisters Yoyo & Nene have that music/atmosphere, which probably strays even farther from the target since there's no school aspect like Harry Potter either. I did only give this movie a 5/10 and it doesn't have that high a rating on MAL either, but I still recommend trying it for the animation.

Oh cool, a manga rec. I haven't tried much manga because I've never really enjoyed comics much, not sure why. But since it's so in line with my favorite storyline and type of character, I'll definitely try it, ty.

Nah, I wouldn't rewatch the show just for Ais, she barely got any screentime. I was only using her to exemplify the type of character I enjoy watching because you mentioned liking coodere and you've seen the show (but it isn't in your list!)

Wow's that's a ton of esports experience. I've never watched games much, except almost a year ago when I saw a Rocket League tournament with some friends, and we were fairly hooked (this one, if you'd like to try too: https://youtu.be/xtTLaBicbtA?t=7m57s). I watched a few more this year as something casual to watch for those times when you don't feel like doing anything, mostly following a fan-favorite team and just watching their matches in the few major tournaments this year. This past weekend was the culmination of the biggest league the game has had thus far in Hollywood, and it was pretty crazy with lesser Rocket League teams beating the best teams in the game, so many upsets throwing every tournament prediction out the window, and I had a blast rooting for my team as they performed above and beyond every expectation.

Learning/practicing while having fun like that is always a good idea. Unfortunately many professions don't have that option.

I've had Appleseed on my watch list (offline) ever since I saw some AMVs featuring it, really looks good. Yeah I enjoy full CGI too and probably prefer it to meshed standard+CGI which often breaks the viewer's immersion, but I never really have much of a problem with it either. I recently finished the I think full-CGI Knights of Sidonia, and it took a few minutes to get used to their CGI characters, but I ended up loving the anime, especially the first season. Of course it was probably more due to my heavy bias toward the protagonist being thrust into new setting and being skilled yet nice and humble like Ais.

Tried Youtubing Girls und Panzer for a scene and got this tank scene as the first result. Seems really choppy with poor framerate in the CGI sections, and this part in the middle with standard animation mesh looked off to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAAnUqhKWZI&t=1m30s
But it's just a random scene of course, I'll try the show sometime.

Watch any esports?

Oh okay, then yeah I think that classic -dere approach to characters is better and more realistic. Hmm, that reminds me of an anime that I think has a character like that... and they fake a relationship, with both being children of gangsters... hmm, what was that called... oh yeah, lol "fake" is in the title, it's Nisekoi. I forget if she flips back and forth or not, but I think they do have each other's back quite a bit, so there's another rec.

I Heart CGI. I know there're plenty out there that don't like too much of it, but gimme as much as you want in a movie or whatever and I'll gladly eat it all up.

That's a nice hobby to have. I don't really have much of a hobby, just either playing games, reading books, or watching stuff.

>some extended quiet moments and transitions that felt a tad long to me.

Oh if that's all it is, then I should be more than fine. See I always watch everything with a controller in hand and I made it so that the controller's up button skips forward 2 seconds, so whenever there's too much unnecessary dead space like this, I just hit that button once or twice. Of course that's only for "unnecessary" dead space, like if the movie pauses for a few seconds to show some beautiful scenery or artwork or something, I probably won't skip it -- might actually pause it for a few more seconds to admire some good CG or something.

>*Wouldn't let me edit at the time so I redid the post.*

You'll find me doing that often. I'm an edit fiend because I'll usually have something to say shortly after submitting anything. Like how I completely forgot to say that I'm actually glad what happened happened in the beginning of Katanagatari's final ep because Shichika unleashing as a result was such a show-stealer it made me bump my wavering high 7/10 for Katanagatari to an 8. And how I have a soft spot for taken-for-granted characters too, but even more than that I respect and more enjoy watching characters like Ais that're skilled / top-tier yet still pure. Actually I think I just really like the "pure" trait in general. Plus, Hestia did get a tad, just a tad annoying at times.

My rating method rests on nothing but my overall enjoyment, with anything I give 6 or higher = like, 4 or lower = dislike, 5 = average, and 8 = amazing or somehow special to me. So something can have the best ever art, animation, music, writing, and whatever else, but if I didn't actually enjoy it for whatever reason, maybe all the characters were shit or something, I'll bomb the score. Like I did for the high-rated and pretty well-respected anime movie Colorful: 2/10. But I have analyzed this "enjoyment" of mine to see which elements of a show I tend to enjoy more than others, and came up with this ranking in the opening post: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=388617. I'd love to see your element ranking too.

>sitting at my computer running liquid simulations and image renders

Job or hobby?

Jin-Roh has dystopian elements? Damn, if I hadn't started the Geass movies I definitely would've tried it tonight. Thanks for bumping it way up my queue though, I'll probably watch it next week. Crap, slow pacing. I detest slow pacing more than almost anything unless the other elements of the show really go above and beyond, so I'm glad you mentioned it's just a few slow spots.

>I felt my list was getting up there but you're about 3x where I'm at so original suggestions may be few and far between.

Well it doesn't just have to be anime for me; I'd be happy with book, movie, and normal tv show recommendations too.

Oh sweet, a low-rated rec. Like if a title's highly rated, chances are that I'll try it eventually anyway, so hidden shows like this Itsuka Tenma are the perfect recommendations.

I can't remember much about Itazura, but I must've really enjoyed it to give it a 7/10. Yeah, I hated the guy too, but maybe I liked the protagonist's character enough to make up for it? Dunno =/

Ah, vndb. Haven't touched a VN in years, but of the few I tried, my favorite's easily G-Senjou no Maou, a cat-and-mouse battle of wits thriller that reminded me of Death Note at times: https://vndb.org/v211
Though you're of the minority that disliked Death Note it seems. Certainly agree with your 4/10 for the second half, but that first half was too riveting.
FauxAzn Aug 5, 2016 1:12 PM
You're rooting for Hestia? I like Ais's character better. I figured you'd be for Ais too since she's coodere.

Add We Still Don't Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day to the list. I actually have Problem Children all downloaded 'n ready, not sure when I'll actually get to it though.

>Not that I rule out finding Excalibur, its how they conduct themselves with or without it.

Same.

Hmm, both have each other's backs... I instantly think Katanagatari, but you've already seen that. Okay, here're some you haven't seen: Absolute Duo, Seikai no Monshou, Laputa, Kare Kano, and I think Sakasama no Patema and maybe The Princess and the Pilot. Oh yeah, also the non-anime movie Her (2013).

I don't know much about -dere, but here're some that aren't in your list that I think has either tsun/coodere, but I'm not sure if they're the classic or modern type you're talking about: Bakemonogatari, Steins;Gate, Tonari no Kaibutsu kun, Guilty Crown, Hataraku Maou-sama, Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata, Accel World, Ben-To, Amagi Brilliant Park, and maybe Nazo no Kanojo X.

Yeah, stupid comedy's the worst, but even with "funny comedy", if it's the point of the show, I'm usually turned off.

Lmao, didn't know that about Evangelion. "The fact that these holes were indeed portals to another dimension", lmao.

Yeah, I prefer romance when the show has other main genres rather than pure romance shows too. That said, unlike comedy, I'm still okay with pure romances, like I think my favorite here being Kare Kano (which incidentally was also directed by Evangelion's Hideaki Anno and was cancelled early.)

My favorite genres are, in order: Fantasy, Dystopia, Romance, Game, Sports, Sci-fi. So I've certainly been liking this new trend of shows that've been popping up lately that combine 4-5 of those genres: Log Horizon, No Game No Life, SAO, and the stupidly-titled "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?" which has almost nothing to do with what the title suggests. Also, one of my absolute favorite types of stories to watch/read is when the main character gets thrust into a completely new setting or lifestyle and has to adjust and adapt and consequently go through a ton of character development (examples: Harry Potter, Ippo, Spirited Away, The Matrix, Ender's Game, Avatar -- both the cartoon and James Cameron's movie, etc). Or even just works that have the main character developing into someone more skilled or powerful or special in some way. On that note, please let me know of any good anime/movies/books/tv shows you might know that do either of these things.

Haven't tried Fairy Tail yet, mostly because I'm locked from Shounens from being stuck trying to watch the newer Hunter X Hunter and not really enjoying it unlike literally everyone else. The only reason I haven't dropped it yet is because I already somehow slogged through the awful first two arcs, and the third arc showed promise, and I'm finally at the fourth arc (Yorknew City) which's apparently known to be one of the best arcs.

Hope you don't mind me replying here -- my PM box gets full often, and I like that comments are editable. Ao Haru Ride's actually something I was just about to try a few days ago, but then I discovered this beautiful-looking hidden movie Psychic School Wars and saw that instead. I like varying the genres I watch because variety's the spice of life, so because the movie's also Romance/School, I'll probably try Ao Haru after a few other shows.

Haha, you dislike tragedy so much to the point that you'll actually resort to spoilers to avoid 'em? Ouch, that's tough. I'm glad I don't think I dislike anything that difficult to spot in a show. For me, it's mostly genres. Like I find I don't enjoy shows/movies that focus on comedy much, but I'm perfectly fine with bits of comedy interspersed in shows that focus on other genres. Probably the most difficult it gets for me is how I dislike suspense since suspense usually just means slow and boring to me. So while I have nothing against Horror itself and enjoyed less suspenseful horrors like [REC] and King of Thorn, I end up avoiding Horror since most rely on suspense.

Actually wait, I do have something I dislike that's as difficult! Anything too "deep", or any work that thrives on its symbolism or metaphor or whatever other "intellectual" bull, or boring introspections into life or other pretentious philosophical/psychological nonsense (e.g. Evangelion, Ergo Proxy, Serial Experiments Lain, Kara no Kyoukai). These types of works tend to be quite highly rated so I end up trying 'em not knowing any better, but I almost never enjoy them and usually drop them. Like I never would've finished Lain had it not been for everyone in my previous MAL club venerating it to the umpteenth degree, so I was too curious to see what all the fuss was about. It's not because I'm dumb and just don't "get" them or whatever, I mean my university grades as a Computer Engineering major was an A- short of a perfect 4.0 GPA. I just find them boring, pretentious, and empty of substance.

I see in your "Last Anime Updates" you're planning to watch Ippo! Maybe because you saw my Ippo review? No wait, maybe not since my review's not the top review for Ippo on MAL anymore. Used to be for a long time though since my review had far less downvotes than the one MAL's creator Xinil wrote way back at probably MAL's inception, but then they changed the review system to just upvotes and no downvotes. Anyway, easily my all-time favorite show, hope you enjoy it!
