I BELIEVE EPILOGUES ARE THE BASIS OF GREAT STORY LINES!
The fact is when you grow with the characters and get to know them it's almost like they become your friends. Seeing how friends end up is always something we strive for especially when our path diverge. Leaving some type of closure is essential to great anime. I am not saying it has to entail everything but some closure would be preferred.
