In the past, I stalled use of MAL in Summer of 2009. I resumed use of it in Fall of 2012 and have been consistent since. I update immediately after watching a show, and rate only once completed.
The vast majority of what I watch is on Crunchyroll, as a Premium member. Things elsewhere I tend to wind up missing. It is convenient to have everything in one place, I have no reasons to pirate in this era, and CR has more shows than I can watch as it is so I don't need to go out of my way for more.
When viewing my Completed anime list, I recommend sorting by "Finished Date". Tags are functional filters these days, so consider checking a particular season or special grouping like "Season Favorite".
I never figured out how I want to document really old anime that I haven't rewatched in modern times, so stuff like Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon are missing.
Tags I use:
[[SEASON] [YEAR]]
Aside from easier grouping, I primarily do this so I can easily identify and compare shows that win the "Season Favorite" title. Shows longer than 1 cour (one calendar season) I regard as being only in the season they started in.
[Crunchyroll] / [Funimation] / [Daisuki] / [Toonami]
Which service I primarily watched on.
[catalog]
Catalog-watched. Simply anything that isn't watched while it's still originally airing. Majority of my list is simulcast-watched.
[estimated dates]
The "Start Date" and/or "Finished Date" lists the official air dates or is calculated.
[accurate dates] phasing out this tag, since it's needlessly on everything
I was being attentive and accurately marked the day I started/finished here.
[long-running]
One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Gintama, Reborn, Shugo Chara, Fairy Tail, Hunter x Hunter, Dragon Ball Super.
[short]
Shows focused on episodes far shorter than normal length.
[Season Favorite]
Privileged title earned by one show every season. Always given out every season.
[Season 2nd Favorite]
Almost earned the esteemed rank #1, but I still want to award this show.
[Historic-tier]
The types of shows that will be long remembered, compared to, and referred to. These don't take much passing of time to notice, there is no time requirement.
