Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a newish mecha anime that'll probably be considered a classic in a few years. I'm not finished watching it, but it's very popular.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! is about a kid becoming an heir to an Italian mob, and it's one I couldn't get into, but is supposed to be very good a bit later in the story...
