About Stormy_77
Record of the Lodoss Wars was what got me hooked on anime, thanks to my friends influence. We had an anime gang back in Singapore but I haven't been able to find a club in the States. Initially I thought anime must not be as popular but judging by MAL membership, there's a lot of fans here too, we must just be geographically spread out.

My old anime gang was a great cross section of people. There were the manga freaks, the serious otakus, the robot guys, the cutie pie clique, the fight club, the "pretty doll" lovers, the ecchi/hentai fans, the action figure painters (me) and the "must watch something to cry about" softies. Pity, they were great guys, we used to host anime viewing at different members' houses on a rotating basis, the only rules were (1) minimum disclosure of anime plotline - no spoilers, and prep in case some hentai is involved (2) pause VCR for food and bathroom breaks only during anime halftime. We would stay over and watch anime for like 12 hours straight, then go out and eat, then more anime! Sometimes I dozed off. Those were great anime weekends. I really miss my old anime gang but I think everyone's scattered to the 4 corners of the world now.

My dream is to re-start a new and social anime club/gang where I live. The house is big so there's room for people to crash over on weekends.

We just finished with the media room equipment set up!
* Converted one of the 4 computers to a media PC and it's hooked up to the internet.
* Visuals played on 55 inch plasma. The graphics is as good as can be, thanks to high end graphics card and HDMI cable the computer plays high definition without the need to purchase HD DVD player. I can really start seeing that MKV files are generally better quality (sound and video) than avi.
* A very affordable optical-out sound card (these are surprisingly rare) in the PC links to a receiver and bose 5.1 surround sound system giving us super kick ass OH MY GOD digital audio optical cable quality sound! Believe it or not the optical sound cable cost more than the sound card ... like triple ... and it wasn't even a long cable!
* Thanks to my discovery of bittorrent I have tons of anime downloaded. I actually had to buy a new 500G external hard disk. Only problem is it's almost full already! Between the house, the job and the cats, anime time is precious. I need to watch more so I can delete some, or it will be time to buy yet another external hard disk.

My anime viewing dream place is now fully completed! Ureshii!!! Gambatte! Go us!

IF anyone is visiting or passing by Portland, OR (USA) and wants to do a mega anime session (i.e. watching all 24 episodes in 1 day) just drop me a line, I would love to restart my anime club!

not many female anime watchers where u live or something?

I just finished watching watching another Studio 4°C creation called Eternal Family. This is a short schizophrenic movie about a group of sociopaths that are brainwashed then placed into a family situation for the viewing pleasure of others. It's kinda like the Truman Show on crack. The animation is in true 4°C fashion, a style that has become one of favorites. I love the work that these guys do.

I also finally finished Paradise Kiss. Not sure why they had to go and make George bi-sexual. It pretty much ruined the romance aspect of this show, however it did add and air of reality to this show about high fashion and love. Still it was hard for me to give this one an honest rating. I originally gave it an 8 but then realized that it had a lot of Josei/shounen ai fanservice that really didn't do much for me. I bumped it down to a seven due to personal tastes, but I can see how so many people love the series. I'm moving on to Cromartie High tonight and maybe Dogs: Bullets and carnage. We shall see how much I enjoy Cromartie High first.

I've also started watching quite a lot of older stuff like another one of Tezuka's hentai classics called Kanashimi no Belladonna. This movie was very art house, the animation was atrociousness but the almost Greek fresco style of art made this one worth watching, plus the story seemed to come straight from the mind of Roman Polanski. Tonight I finally made time to watch Dagger of Kamui too. I got it from NF so you can add it to your list if you haven't seen that one yet. You can tell that Ninja Scroll was stylized greatly from this movie. It seemed really long, but I really enjoyed the historical aspects of the film, especially since I've been reading a lot of Japanese history lately.

Actually Barefoot Gen, both movies are available on Netflix. And as for Aria I guess I'll take your advise and just try to squeeze in an episode here and there. But I really just want to watch it all. But your right I get board real quick.

Orion1 | 11-08-09, 10:13 PM
Yes well here is a little article on Barefoot Gen. You will definitely need some Kleenex. I just finished a series called Kaiba last night. Now that was a seriously on the weird side but I really liked most of it. Especially the first six or so episodes. The ending ironically just seemed too normal for a series that was so abstract. But still definitely worth watching. I'm kinda laughing to myself a little too because I finally finished Berserk and finally realize what everyone has been talking about with the whole finishing the ending. I tried to finish Aria the Animation last night too, but fell asleep during episode 10. I'm gonna see if I can't keep my eyes open tonight and finish it.

So I went ahead and started watching Aria the Animation again. It was very calm and kinda has a similar feel to Clannad, Haibane Renmei and Bartender in that it is very slow and really takes it's time to develop it's characters, setting and like in Bartender their profession which gives the show a real calming effect. There is also a strange mystical feeling to the show that paints a peaceful and alien future to the current reality on earth, it almost feels magical. Plus all the talk of clairvoyance is starting to peak my interest. The only episode I really didn't enjoy that much was the one about Aria the president cat. That was a little too kiddish for me. I hope they don't focus too much on the cats. Don't get me wrong, I like cats, but ultimately these cats should for all intensive purposes remain cats. That episode really kinda annoyed me. Other than that the series is very peaceful and easy to watch. Ironically I also watched Barefoot Gen. That movie just ripped my heart out like Grave of the Fireflies. I just read somewhere that this anime is compulsory for Japanese grade schoolers. I think that Barefoot Gen should also be shown to American children along with Holocaust material and Roots of course.

Hey! So I found out about Torchlight, an awesome stand-alone RPG. You can download it here. After you have downloaded it just Unrar all the .RAR files into one folder, mount or burn the .BIN image file and the setup should start automatically.

It only takes around 400MB off your hard drive and the PC specs are ridiculously low. The overall game quality is superb (quality-space relation). I recommend it 100%

More info about Torchlight here.

LoL! Aria umo, I'm right on that. LoL! But I took your advise and I'm going to watch the first few episodes of E-D's Ghost Hunt.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

You named your kid after a character on Berserk? That's Punkrock!! Which character and does your husband know that's where you got the name? I actually started watching the series a long time ago then for what ever reason it got a little yaoi and I just quit watching it. But from what I hear it gets really good towards the end. So, ok it's in the mail along with Martin Successor Nadesico, Paradise Kiss and the first two volumes of Astro boy manga.

I guess I'm just not that dedicated of a completionist. I'll leave SD Gundam for you. I actually started watching G Gundam and didn't like it at all so that's one that just gonna have to go under a gundam series I'll probably never finish. Victory Gundan on the other hand was getting pretty good. I should finish that one.

AdventureLand had some laughs but the sound track and the 80's nostalgia was what made me really enjoy that film. I still stay your fine to start Kara no Kyoukai, each movie can easily stand alone. I really enjoyed the first four movies. I'm about to watch Battle for Terra. I'll let you know what I think when I finish. Mezzo DSA was the weakest of Umetsu's work other than Kite Liberator which I have a real disliking for because of the Bone Monster and lack of adult content. Kite was just so edgy while Liberator was just timid and attempted to jump into sci/fi which was really not what "Kite" is supposed to be about IMO. Higurashi is very long and drawn out. The first series doesn't even get good until the last few episodes. Looks like I will need to start Ghost Hunt though, I was planning on buying that one but I have a few other things in my Amazon cart that are screaming "BUY ME"! Paradise Kiss and Berserk being the two series screaming the loudest, but I want to buy Martian Successor Nadesico too. Ok so I found the entire Ghost Hunt series for under forty dollars, I'll buy it.

My suggestion for a good scary halloween anime, fairly easy watch too is Kara no Kyoukai 1: Fukan Fuukei. You don't have to marathon all these movies either just watching the first movie is good enough for a good Halloween Haunt. Jigoku Shoujo(Hell Girl) could be fun too, it's very repetitious though and doesn't really get good till the second season so it would take some effort. An oldie but goody that I've been meaning to finish myself is Vampire Princess Miyu. It has a four part OVA series that was getting really good when I put it on hold for some reason. I think I'll watch that for Halloween. Or maybe I should finally start Ghost Hunt.

They really left us hanging with New Challenger didn't they. I'm starting to really dislike Ippo right now though. Your right though there were a few episodes that had me ROFL!!! Unforntunately they've still left Ippo's character undeveloped and impotent, with no confidence and now they appear to be leading up to some sort of super Dempsey roll. Basically I'm sick of the Dempseyroll, his coach should tell him to practice the fundamentals and get better defense while incorporating his powerful offensive punches. It seems to me that he could be adding some new punches to his arsenall. Like the corkscrew punch Dante uses. There was a moment where he was using everything effectively. I'd just like to see his overall boxing become better, not some stupid super Dempsey roll. I'm really rooting for him getting his ass kicked by Miyata now. This franchise doesn't look like it's anywhere close to running out material, does it now. There is a lot of room for improvement, that's why I'm giving New Challenger a 6/10 basically because of Ippo. Takamura's huge battle and Miyata's fights where the most interesting, however very predicable but very entertaining.

I learned right after I finished typing you that last message that, there is another strand of flu that is also going around supposedly not h1n1. Apparently the new one is supposedly attacking the respiratory system, while the h1n1 is more apparent with vomiting. In your case it sounds like you got hit a lot harder than I did. I probably still have some lingering bacteria, but my mucus has gone back to clear so most of viral and bacterial infections have subsided and I might not be contagious anymore, but I'm still coughing and I have a lot of sinus pressure in my head still. I'm gonna give it one more day of rest and pump my body full of anti oxidants in an attempt to get back to work tomorrow. Last thing I want is to go back to work and get sick again. I didn't go to the doctor because I didn't want to be exposed to the h1n1 if I didn't have it. LoL

Scary huh??? By scary I suppose you mean violent, gory...

Based on your list and I recommend (in no specific order order):

Outside the scary-gory-violent genre I recommend you to watch Itazura na Kiss, One Outs, Seto no Hanayome (+ OVAs, awesome!), Toradora! (just beautiful!) and I can't believe you haven't watched Welcome to the NHK!, I mean it's just a must see.

"Make your choice". Otherwise, if not into anime, you'll have lots of fun with the, just released, Saw VI : D
