The first time I saw Summer Wars was at Anime News Network. I read their recent review on it and man, they were absolutely blown away. This, as well as the interesting plot and title, made me want to watch it right away.
The plot of Summer Wars definitely intrigued me. It was just too bizarre and out of the ordinary and I just couldn't help myself to not watch it. It pretty much had everything - slice of life, action, romance, annoying family members and even had something along the lines of a social networking site as one of its central concepts! It definitely tried
...
something new by making it more modern and something young adults can somewhat relate to.
As previously mentioned, Summer Wars focuses a lot on the Internet and its relation. This is done through OZ, which was a popular hangout space that you could access practically anywhere. The user was allowed to make a virtual character that was to present them in the virtual world where you can shop for almost anything - whether it be clothes, toys or even stationary supplies! When OZ was pretty much destroyed, it truly conveyed horror of how much the internet was a part of their lives to the point where the traffic lights wouldn't work anymore. It showed that without the internet and the current technology today, the world would pretty much be in total havoc and would become a nightmare.
The cast of Summer Wars was truly numerous. This was probably another highlight to Summer Wars as it showed different personailties and how these characters would interact each other. They focused on developing the characters as well, which was a plus considering how many characters there were. Clearly noticeable out of the whole bunch would probably be Kazuma. At home, he is nothing but a teenager who rarely speaks and is always at the computer but at OZ, he is known worldwide as the champion in the online fighting game. This shows contrast between the two of how weak he truly is compared to his online status at OZ.
As for the art and animation, Summer Wars is beyond magnificent. I loved the artwork and the simplicity it brought out. The characters were drawn well and the background was truly great. The animation was superb - and showed just how excellent it was when it switched to the fighting scenes and the 3d look of OZ. This was close to perfect and I never thought it would look as great as it did. Normally, I would hate this type of artwork but something about Summer Wars just made it work.
Summer Wars is truly something great. It is fresh and the character and plot line are thoroughly enjoyable and just makes the whole movie a lot better. It explores a lot of themes and concepts that is well executed. The art is simply gorgeous and the animation was smooth and crisp. It doesn't get better than this and Summer Wars is simply something you want to get if you are planning on getting a movie that is enjoyable by pretty much anyone.

I have already noticed the show Jigoku Shoujo long before I decided to watch it. I knew about Enma Ai already, but only the fact that she was the main character. Because the ongoing animes were so disappointing, I decided to take a break from it and watch an entirely different show. After seeing that there was full episodes of Jigoku Shoujo on Youtube, I decided to watch that and give it a go.
Jigoku Shoujo is about different people who wants to take revenge on someone they hate; whether it be a bully, an annoying coworker or even a murderer. They can take revenge and
...
send that person to Hell, via the Internet (how amazing is that?). The site is called Hell Correspondence, and it rumoured to be only available to access at midnight and to those who want revenge. It is then Enma Ai's job as the Hell Girl to fulfill her client's request with the help of Hone Onna, Wanyuudo and Ren Ichimoku.
Jigoku Shoujo's plot is pretty much straight forward - short stories that lasted around one episode usually containing a person they would focus on and an antagonist. The person would ask help from Enma Ai, and throughout the episode would reveal the backstory of that individual and why they want to send someone to hell. By the end of the episode, the antagonist usually dies and sent to hell. This worked quite well for a few episodes, but then started getting a little bit repetitive. It was the same thing over and over again, and in some cases even had the same sort of plot as an earlier episode. However, I do commend them for their creativity in being able to portray different scenarios per episode and except for the few occasions where it was kind of the same, it was generally very well done. At a later stage of the anime there became a distinct plot of Enma's background and why she became the Hell Girl. Another recurring plot was that of Hajime and Tsugumi's and why Hajime tries to do the opposite of Enma and to stop the people from committing revenge. Plot wise, I think Jigoku Shoujo does what it is supposed to, and the finale of the first season was definitely excellent and opened up the possibilities of further seasons.
Now the characters of Jigoku Shoujo were quite diverse. There are new characters introduced each episode, but of course, they don't really appear again. However, there are recurring characters such as Enma Ai, who appear every episode. Now, it is really not possible to develop the main characters since pretty much all the episodes were focused on the minor characters each episode. The last 5-10 episodes were the only ones used to really develop them and to provide history on the main characters. Of course, the most interesting character out of the bunch is no other than Enma Ai herself. I asked a lot of questions involving her character and towards the end, I feel like some were answered in great detail, but some were still left a little fuzzy. The other one that struck me the most is Hajime. he is really a love or hate character, and for me, I really hate him. It might not be him and his actual background, but his role as the stereotypical type who wants to "save" the people around him. Moreover, he utterly terrible at saving people so I thought, why bother with it? But towards the end, I guess I did start to like him a little bit. Just a little.
Now, Jigoku Shoujo's art is amazing in some parts, but not all the time. Now, I don't know why this is the case though (*cough* Studio DEEN *cough*) but overall it was pretty mediocre. Nothing really stood out for me, but nothing was really horrible about it. I gotta say that the character designs of Hone, Ren and Enma were superb and loved it whenever they were on the scene, especially Hone. The animation as well was pretty mediocre - except Enma's nagajuban. I mean, how can one not like moving flowers on her dress? The musical score of Jigoku Shoujo was impressive too, ranging from the soothing calm nature to the action scenes towards the end of each episode. The opening song wasn't terrible exciting, and really gives off a different feeling to the anime and portrays it so differently, one might think it came from a different anime. As for the ending, I thought it was really entertaining to listen to and loved the transition between the final scene of each episode into the ending song.
Overall, I think that Jigoku Shoujo was an interesting anime to watch. Although it is a little repetitive at the beginning, the ending is truly worth it. The art and animation is mediocre, but doesn't really disturb you from enjoying the show. The musical score is very wonderful and was a pleasure to listen to. Watch it if you like bad guys going to hell :D

Story
The basic premise of Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou is Modern Magic, which uses codes to produce spells instead of using the traditional incantations and scrolls, etc. This is somewhat a fresh spin to other magical girl shows, and is refreshing. Of course, there are also magicians in the show that use the olden version of magic, which requires them to recite an incantation. The story itself was very plain, with just the basic evil guy trying to conquer the world. Although it was somewhat a new spin on this genre, the hopeless story plot just brought the mark down terribly.
Rating: 6/10
Development
The characters in the show
...
are really loveable from the very start. But I guess that ends there. Pretty much no development throughout the entire show, not even on Koyomi, who still fails at magic at the end of the show. I mean, seriously? Usually, the main character would get some uber-epic special power that can destroy the bad guy and smolder him to pieces, but I guess not. All she can do by the end is the only thing she could do from the beginning, summoning washbasins. Sigh. Oh well...

Art/Animation
Finally, something good I can say about this anime! XD What made me want to watch this in the first place was because of it's artwork. Although it seems that not many viewers appreciate this art / coloring style, I really loved it. Yea yea, it's all not in proportion and whatnot...but I don't really care XD Not much to say here again but it's perfect =3
Rating: 10/10
Sound
The opening and ending for the show was really enjoyable, and catchy as well...which reminds me that I have to get the full single soon =3 The background music was decent and nothing much to complain about them ^^ Ai Nonaka's voice is awesome as always, and did a good job as Koyomi's voice. Props to the other voice actressess who also did a good job =]
Rating: 9/10
Enjoyment
Despite having a horrible story plot and character development, I have to say, the show was still enjoyable to watch (to an extent), especially the filler episodes. As long as the evil bad guy wasn't in the shot, the show wasn't too bad after all ^^; I really miss all the characters now O_O

Story:
Storywise, EOTE does everything well. Right from the start, we were already sucked in into the world of EOTE by such a wonderful story plot. This was truly a unique plot and it stood out from the other spring animes. They created something that would definitely make us more interacted with the story – like for example, what would you do if you had a magic cell phone and you could do whatever you wanted? The creators explored and definitely created a great anime that truly took a somewhat romantic anime and put an extra twist in it.
Rating: 10/10
“Definitely no complaints there. The story is
...
definitely what made EOTE truly shine.”
Development:
Well from the start, I knew that they were going to be lots of characters introduced throughout the show, but I didn’t know there would be this much! They sure took their time introducing the other characters to the show, even introducing 3 new characters at the second to last episode! It was good that they didn’t rush through everything, and I’m glad that it will continue over with 2 additional movies planned to air later in the year. The characters for me definitely were explored through very well and were well developed. Hopefully, the other minor characters will be explored more through the next two movies as I am eager to know more about them =]. The story also developed well throughout the show and it was good to know it wasn’t really rushed.
Rating: 8/10
“Solid, well developed characters that were nice to watch. I just wished more of the other minor characters were explored more.”
Art / Animation:
The art of EOTE was definitely average. I thought (judging from the poster) that it was going to look very outdated and ugly, but it definitely caught me by surprise there. It also reminded me a bit of other Hayao Miyazaki works (mainly Spirited Away), I think it was the way Saki was designed. It wasn’t a strong point (the artwork / character design) but I guess I have such high expectations in terms of art in an anime that for some, the artwork would be considered excellent. I love their animations though, very nice and smooth. Definitely gotta love their 3d cars XD.
Rating: 7/10
“So-so character designs but pulled through with neat animation work.”
Sound:
I absolutely ADORED the opening song of EOTE. Especially the kickass animation they had in it. If you’re not going to watch EOTE, then at least watch the opening. The ending was nice too, and neat animation as well for it. Throughout the show, I have no complaints with the BGM being played in the background. It was fitting to the show and that is what counts, well at least I that is what counts…
Rating: 9/10
“Nice opening and ending song with some neat animations in both of them. Also, a nice score being played in the background which enhanced the show as a whole.”
Enjoyment:
I thoroughly enjoyed watching EOTE, and was one of the only two (the other being K-On) which I truly watched and enjoyed during this season’s lineup. Valkyria Chronicles was a close third though. Anyway, EOTE is something anyone would enjoy, and would keep you entertained and would keep you watching.
Rating: 9/10
“Enjoyed every episode of EOTE and was definitely entertaining.”
Final Rating: 43/50
“A nice engaging show that is something that should be watched by everyone. Nice and sweet characters as well as a great soundtrack make the show stand out even more. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I’m sure all others have enjoyed it as well. If you haven’t tried it, now is the perfect time to do so.”

Story:
Storywise, Ga-Rei Zero (Abbreviated to GRZ from now on) does it very well. This was one of the highlights of the show, and definitely was a solid good plot backing it up. It engages the viewer not to drop the show and it was sure to please even the viewers who are not a fan of the genre. I know this since I am definitely not a huge fan of action shows, and I absolutely loved GRZ. The twists and turns of the plot was exceptional, and was entertaining but definitely kept you at the edge of your seat until the very end of the
...
show. However, the ending for me was not very good, but I’ll let you judge that yourself ;)
Rating: 9/10
“Solid and good plot that was very entertaining and would keep viewers from watching. A deep storyline with lots of twists in it. If it wasn’t for the ending, I would have given it a full 10.”
Art/Animation:
Wow. Very exceptional designs. I absolutely adored the character designs. Not to mention the kick-ass animation that the producers did. I have no comments for this one, all I can say is that it is brilliant. Heck, even a Mio (K-On) lookalike is there!
Rating: 10/10
“Nothing else to say but brilliant. Not just the character designs, but the smooth and awesome animations.”
Enjoyment:
I definitely enjoyed GRZ. The characters were loveable, I truly loved all of them! :3 Nabuu FTW! The first 2 episodes definitely were the most memorable for me and was the reason I kept watching. GRZ has a little bit something for everyone, definitely.
Rating: 10/10
“An enjoyable show to watch. Definitely won’t get bored of it, that’s for sure ^^”
Final Rating: 29/30
GRZ is definitely a must watch anime. Trust me, YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT. At first, I hated Ga-Rei Zero before even watching it! You know why? Cause I thought that the name was horrible XD. But little did I know that this show was exceptional and I know that I would have regretted not watching it. That just goes to show that you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover (in this case, not to judge an anime by its name XD). Definitely recommended for everyone, even those who aren’t fans of the genre.

Story:
Well as stated before, the story is basic and simple. When the show was still to air, all that they gave us was just 1 or 2 short sentences on the story and premise of what K-On was going to be. I thought that it was clever since it engages viewers to find out more about it. But actually, there was nothing more to it than that! The story wasn’t really a strong point of K-On, since this was generally just a heartwarming, cute and entertaining show. The basic premise was good, but it wasn’t something new and original.
Rating: 7/10
“Nice story plot, but it could
...
have been more original and better.”
Art / Animation:
I loved the art used in K-On! Definitely one of the highlights of the show. The character designs were also the ones who designed the characters of Kannagi, which I loved as well. The art is definitely unique and is something you don’t see in your average anime, which was great. The backdrop was nothing special, but it definitely was nicely done and suited the show. My only concern was that the animations near the end of the show (at Episode 12 to be exact) were bad. What’s more, it definitely screwed up when they were performing at Episode 12, but it was nothing major.
Rating: 9/10
“Cute and lovable designs that are unique. The animation started to get rusty near the end which took resulted in it not getting a perfect 10.”
Enjoyment:
K-On was very entertaining and engaging. It definitely cracked me up and the lovely characters definitely was one of the reasons. Kudos to Yui’s voice who is also new to the industry and excelled amazingly as Yui. I thoroughly enjoyed watching K-On and it isn’t something to be forgotten.
Rating: 9/10
“Nice and heartwarming and thoroughly enjoyable.”
Final Rating: 25 / 30
“K-On is definitely something not to be forgotten. Its quirky characters and lovely art was something to look forward to in every episode. A great show and is recommended to everyone, especially those looking for a laugh and moe characters!”

Story
In terms of story, Sola is quite unique. What seems to be at first a general, boy meets girl, boy falls in love type of story, it is actually a bit more complex than that. It does follow the usual routine though, but along the way, it is not the usual events that lead to the usual ending. So anyway, the story to me is very nice. It gives a refreshing new outlook on the romance genre. Sola also incorporates some supernatural themes into it, which makes it a little extra special. The story can get a little boring sometimes, since at the beginning, it
...
is very slow paced. However, the last few episodes are jam-packed full of action scenes and good dialogue so it definitely balances it out.
Rating: 8/10
“Nice story that incorporates more than just romance.”
Art
Exceptional. That basically sums all of it up. I am very picky about character designs and this is definitely in my top 5 regarding art and character designs/background quality. Must watch if you are looking for good art. Naru Nanao definitely is a master at drawing characters. She also drew Da Capo and the Ef series so you know its good.
Rating: 10/10
“Wonderful designs and backgrounds. Very nice and cute characters”
Enjoyment/Sound
Well, Sola was an enjoyable show for me. The first few episodes were a bit boring, and it was because of the art that kept me going. Good thing I did, since I really enjoyed it towards the end. The BGM was very good. The OP and ED were nice, as well as the animation that went with it. No problems with this section, except that the first few eps are a tad bit slow paced.
Rating: 9/10
“An enjoyable show to watch. Sounds are also good and helps accompany the story”
Final Rating: 28/ 30
“Nice show to watch. Recommended to people who like romance with a bit of action placed into it. A must watch for people who would enjoy good high quality character designs. I definitely enjoyed watching the show and hopefully, you would too!”

If you know me very well, you will know that I am a very picky about character drawings and backgrounds. And Chaos;Head is no exception, no matter how much I was waiting for it to be released and aired in Japan. However, I must say that the story is intriguing enough for me to keep watching and watching, despite the horrible art.
Story
I must say, the story of Chaos;Head is very intriguing and mysterious. It drives off from the usual anime, since it is a psychological/horror series. It certainly stays true to its genre since it deals with concepts like delusions and murder chains. Anyhow, Chaos
...
Head's strongest point is probably the story itself. It keeps you at the edge of the seat, and it might be slow at times, but when it comes down to the crunch, it is exceptional. The story is also much deeper than what you think. Its not all about "boy sees murder, more murder happens, omg whodunit?!?" in Chaos;Head. If you think that, oh boy are you in for a ride. Believe me. Since from reading the plot, I thought I was just going to be looking at gruesome murders time to time and the police trying to find out who did it. But, of course, I was in for a shock. And I bet you will as well :P
Story Rating: 10/10
"A twistful plot that keeps you guessing and wanting more. It is above expectations and is absolutely top-notch. But wait, who's eyes are those eyes?"
Art
Man. I've gotta say. The art is absolutely terrible. It looks very outdated, even the colours! I'm very picky in art and this is definitely one of the worst in a 2008 anime. However, there is one thing I kinda liked. The 3d Water Wheel. I absolutely loved it. XD It was probably the only highlight in terms of Art. Now, I know I'm being harsh in the art of the Chaos;Head anime, but I've just gotta point out that I'm only very harsh since the graphics of the Visual Novel of Chaos;Head was beyond amazing.
So yea...if the anime had the graphics of the visual novel, boy would I have given it a perfect score. Sadly, that is not the case.
Art Rating: 3/10
"Very low budget looking and cheap animations. The 3d Water Wheel gave it 3 points though."
Sound
I have nothing much to say about the bgm of Chaos;Head. It wasn't exceptional, but it wasn't bad either. The Op and Ed were quite nice as well :) An Ok music score over all :)
Sound Rating: 7/10
"Nice BGMs and Op and Ed. Helped set the atmosphere :)"
Enjoyment
Well, it was both good and bad XD Sometimes, the story completely blew me away and I enjoyed it, but sometimes, the plot went too slow and I suddenly notice how horrible the art is again. It's definitely a "Wow, the end already?" type of show, which means that time goes by quickly when you watch it. So, nice and enjoyable overall.
Enjoyment Rating: 8/10
"Quite enjoying to watch. Well, unless you are young and they show the scary scenes of course."
Final Rating: 7.5/10
Even though it had horrible artwork, the story definitely compensates for it. Fans of Horror will surely like this ^^ Recommended.

First of all, I’ve got to say, I really love this anime. This is one of those animes that you just have to watch, regardless of your age. The only problem is that you might run out of tissues in your house when you finish watching this great show.
Story:
Like all other Key titles, Clannad has a pretty sad story. It’s about a girl called Nagisa trying to rebuild the drama club even though it was disbanded due to insufficient members. The guy decides to help Nagisa to recruit members and to build up confidence. Little does he know that Nagisa has an (incurable?) illness, which
...
meant that she had to repeat, which meant that all her friends before have gone off to a different school. Tomoya (the main character) also meets 5 other girls which all (including Nagisa) somehow made Tomoya change for the better.
I thought the story wasn’t different from other romance/drama animes, and it sure sounded the same like all the other Key titles, but somehow, they managed to pull it off and it was a great success. Usually, shows that sound like all of the other romance anime (or any other genre) tend to either fail or tend to be average. But Key still comes out on top.
Story Rating: 10/10
“Excellent story telling and compelling drama. What more do you want?”
Art:
I have two words for the art of Clannad: Absolutely Spectacular. Now, now, their characters could have been a bit better but one thing that really struck me was the backgrounds. They were drawn really well and the lighting of it all gave it that extra touch. I especially liked the “Another World” backgrounds, especially the room where the robot and the girl tend to be. Even if it had barely anything in it and even if you couldn’t see much, I thought it embodied the scene pretty well.
The characters, well, they were all right. Not to say that they were bad or anything, since they were really nice. I am a bit (actually VERY) picky with character drawings so don’t expect a “The character drawings were of a very high standard” comment anytime soon. However, one thing that really struck me with the characters was their eyes. I’ve never seen eyes being drawn like that so I guess that was a plus. They were unique and I doubt there is an anime out there that had these kinds of eyes.
Art Rating: 9/10
“Spectacular backgrounds and nice art overall. Character drawings kept it from getting a perfect score. Good drawings nonetheless.”
Sound:
Wow. I love the background music of Clannad. There isn’t much to say about it except it being really excellent. It fitted the story and the settings pretty well. My only nitpick would have to be that they reused the music from the game, and that they didn’t make a brand new music for Clannad. But since the soundtrack of the game was really good, I decided to let it go XD.
Sound Rating: 8/10
“One of the highlights of Clannad. From quirky BGMs to heartwrenching ones. This is something to replay on your mp3 player.”
Enjoyment:
Clannad was thoroughly enjoyable, and not once did I not want to drop or put the anime on hold. It is one of those animes that make the time go fast since it’s really good (and not a lot can do that for me) and at the end of each episode you’d be saying: “Wow, 30 minutes already?” It was funny, it was sad, it was an emotional rollercoaster. I loved every minute of it.
Enjoyment Rating: 10/10
“Absolutely enjoyable. To the unique characters to the funny scenarios. It was truly one of the best.”
Final Rating: 9.8/10
Clannad is one of those animes that you will never forget. I suggest you stop all your downloads, and make Clannad your first priority. You will never regret it. Well, maybe you might regret not buying enough tissues to last you 25 episodes.

Bakemonogatari is based on a series of light novels by Nisio Isin, and is later produced by Shaft. It features different short stories all related to the main character, Araragi Koyomi. Bakemonogatari is now known for its superb art and animation, and the unique way the story was presented to us. Adding to that, Bakemonogatari surprised many due to its weekly ranking sales and how well it sold across Japan. This was clearly evident in the field of BD sales, where it made history, selling 29,000 units of Bakemonogatari Vol.1, beating out the previous record holder of Macross Frontier, which sold at 22,000 units. It
...
also took first place in DVD sales in Oct 26 - Nov 11, beating other titles such as Gintama, Haruhi and Eden of the East. Volume 3 of Bakemonogatari also sold a lot, getting 1st place again in terms of DVD and Blu Ray sales, the margin between 1st place and 2nd place (Detective Conan Movie) being around 5 million. Volume 4 will be delayed a little while and will be released in January 27th, hoping to take the title of 1st place again.
It is clear at why Bakemonogatari sold so well over the time. Bakemono is a collection of short stories, all with their unique characteristics and aspects that makes a show great. It showcased different supernatural cases such as the Hitagi Crab, Mayoi Snail and Tsubasa Cat. Plotwise, Bakemono surely delivered and made it an entertaining show to watch. These different stories usually panned out in 3-4 episodes, where we see some character development and background story on some of the characters. Although each story shows a different heroine, one can still say that these stories are connected together, and this becomes evident in the later stages of the light novel, which has yet to be animated. The stories are engaging, and keeps the viewers interested with new materials to showcase each time. This allows endless opportunities for OVAs and even a second season due to its numerous heroines with each a unique background and even later chapters in the light novels which have yet to be shown in the animated version.
As already stated before, Bakemonogatari has its fair share of characters. Although 4 heroines is typical in a generic romantic comedy show, Bakemonogatari is somewhat different, as each heroine has their own story that can be deeply developed and shown more insight to in the future. The characters are well thought out, and what makes the show shine is their mindless rantings and they way they interact. Hitagi, being the central heroine of the show is aware of her "tsundere" status and is possessed by a crab who takes all of her weight. Then, we have a loli girl who gets her "first touch" taken away by Koyomi, and has entertaining fight sequences with Koyomi. Not only that, we have a smart and well mannered girl who you would consider as the clumsy one in all anime. However, she is anything but ordinary, and has a completely different persona which is because of a cat! These characters are a unique touch and strives to break out of the ordinary. Bakemonogatari offers us a distinct range of characters that are all unique in its own way, and tries to enhance the show even more with the interactions between the cast.
Bakemonogatari is definitely a true highlight due to its plot and characters, but it doesn't stop there. Bakemono offers us a unique art style and animation that is just as good as its story and cast. From the moment it started, Bakemono offered us a visual treat unlike any other, and the use of lighting and colours truly brought the world of Bakemonogatari to life. The art is high quality, and the characters are drawn exceptionally well. the background is unique and uses different techniques that you don't see in a regular anime. The fight scenes are also choreographed really well, and the animation is smooth. I mean, what more is there to not like? I was absolutely blown away by Shaft's effort in the new art direction it gave us and it certainly created a visual masterpiece. It was consistent all throughout the entire season, and although some may say that the Nadeko arc was a bit rough on the edges, it didn't mind me at all. Overall, the art and animation of Bakemono was another highlight to the series, and is just perfect.
Bakemonogatari also offered us different new openings for each heroine. My favourite would probably be Nadeko's and Hachikugi's openings as they were upbeat, and the animation sequence it provided was spectacular. The musical score of Bakemono were great too, and each track was done well. The seiyuu's did a good job too, especially Chiwa Saito as the voice of Senjougahara Hitagi.
Bakemonogatari is by far one of the best animes I have ever seen. Combined with a great plot and entertaining characters, every minute was truly enjoyable. It didn't stop there, as it also presented a visually stunning work, filled with vibrant colours and the animation being generally smooth. The different openings were great, and were always a blast to listen to. Bakemonogatari is definitely something you should watch - and make sure to download it in the highest quality possible to truly enjoy this new anime by SHAFT.
