My main suggestion would be that if you don't know how to design a website, just get a wordpress hosted blog on wordpress.com. Saves so much hassle and ultimately a lot of money too. The only downside is the limited number of options for website design they provide. You'll feel especially silly if you pay for hosting for a year and then stop blogging after 4-5 months. Plus you can always transfer your stuff over to your own hosted site later through wordpress.
But if you do know how to do website design and are ready to put the money down for hosting, get shared hosting rather than your own dedicated hosting. It's cheaper and works fine for any start up blog. I use hostgator and they seem fine, but shop around. Also if you are designing your own blog, I highly recommend building it on wordpress.org. Seriously, the only reason you don't use wordpress is if you have some sort of problem with open source software. Wordpress.com for hosted on wordpress's own servers, wordpress.org to build the back-end on wordpress but if you want to host it on your own domain.
(also as an aside: I'm generally pretty computer literate, but nothing makes me feel more ignorant than website hosting. Nameservers and IP addresses and everything make my head spin. All the hosting sites have 24 hour online chat help though, so if you are going to go for your own domain, abuse the shit out of that help chat)
Hope that wasn't too overwhelming. Also make sure when you get going to put your blog on anime nano, because it's a good way to get traffic. Good luck!
If you think about it, it is not that funny. Preferences change with time. Steins;Gate was one of my favorite anime when I registered at MAL and I had very little experience back then, thus my username. I still like it as you can see in my anime list, but I have found some other series that surpass it in my opinion.
Archetypes, sterotypes, etc. are all forms of cliches.
"Overusing cliches" is like saying the same thing twice (double meaning), because cliches are a form of overused mediums. What I'm simply saying in my review is: cliches are not bad. People use it as a way express their negativity.
I did indeed talk about story progression. Control F is your friend.
It seems like 8 is a bad score for you. My personal concerns for this show had already been addressed to my liking, and I find a "8" justifiable.
Anyways, I do appreciate the constructive criticism. I write reviews for fun although they are mostly not well-perceived. A lot of people report them lol.
The rating system here is completely subjective, and a "8" is a pretty darn good score for me. I've seen people here giving 5s and declare it as a positive score, so not every score is definitive to your perspective, just to clear up any misunderstandings.
You said that the flaw I had addressed was hardly a flaw, but then again, that's your personal opinion. A lot of people feels the same way as I. And after reading the light novels, I know for a fact that the story progression is one of the major flaws, because this show is not meant to be episodic as it looks to be initially.
I won't argue with you about the cliche part. But you said that the great shows avoid using cliches as much as possible; and yet you've mentioned a lot of great shows with cliches to go along with your argument, disproving yourself. Give me an example of a show without overusing cliches. They exist because they work.
What exactly is wrong with shounen plots? As far as I'm concerned, they are extremely popular and successful.
I mentioned already, 8 is just a number. How you perceive that number is entirely different from how I perceive it.
Thank you for giving such a cogent reply in the first place. It's always nice to talk about anime with people who are willing to accept that differences of perception and opinion should not get in the way of a good old natter about likes and dislikes :)
1. The chess was more than a metaphor as the first game Lelouch plays at the beginning of the series is used to hgihlight his ability to out-think his opponents. While it's true that chess is not an adequate simulation to real battle, it's used to place the idea into the viewers mind that Lelouch is somehow better than everyone else.
2. To be honest, I didn't find him to be all that realistic as a 17 year-old because he was too "perfect". By that I mean that the facades that he showed to people - one face for friends and family, one to strangers, one to opponents, etc - never really overlapped and he never seemed to get his wires crossed. That's something that's almost impossible for humans.
As for his chess game with Schniezel, Lelouch's retreat had little to do with pride and immaturity, and more to do with his distrust of anything that his older brother had to offer him. It was used to show that he wouldn't fall for obvious tricks - which further reinforced the viewers perception of his skills as a general.
3. To be honest, I didn't like that whole "mercy" aspect of his as it was totally out of character. Here you have a young man whose only goal in life is revenge, and he will stop at nothing to get it. If that was truly the case then he would have already accepted that killing people was a requirement - which punches a hole in his character profile.
4. The universe has little to do with Lelouch losing, as that comes from his inability to follow even the most basic rules of war. Know your enemy. Expect the unexpected. Plan for the worst. These rules and more are things that even people who have a basic knowledge of chess understand, so it's laughable that he apparently doesn't know them or is too arrogant to care.
5. To be honest, I would have preferred if he'd actually asked the question and had CC give an evasive answer, as that would have at least shown that he was cautious of his power. Instead he decided to test the limits of it without referring to the instruction manual.
6. I'll admit that some of the ways that he used his power were novel, but what puzzles me is how he was able to gain access to specific soldiers who would act according to his wishes at a certain time - thereby turning the battle in his favour. What woul happen if that soldier was deployed elsewhere, or was sick, or was killed before he could carry out his orders?
7. There are other flaws that I could mention, but I focused on Lelouch as he's the lead character.
I have no idea what a troper is (do I have to take medication for it?), but I don't think CG is about the conflict between idealism and cynicism at all. To be honest, it's purely about revenge and the lengths that people will go to in order to get what they want. Lelouch didn't become the lies, but rather had the weight of the lies forced upon him, and it wasn't until the very end of the second series that he did anything "for the greater good".
Code Geass? I'll add a full review to the request list.
One of the major issues was Lelouch, as he's supposed to be a talented general (hence all the chess), but for some reason he rarely has a backup plan, keeps making rookie mistakes, and aside from testing the limitations of his power, he never actually asked CC what the downside was. The whole "murder princess" thing probably wouldn't have happened otherwise.
As a character, Lelouch is far too reliant on his power - even after he knows the problems with it - and that contradicts the notion that he's a skilled tactician and strategist.

No hard feelings, just different opinions.
Anyway, we can agree to disagree :)

Don't mind the down votes, most MAL users are douchebags.
