Well it's pretty grim so if that's not your thing you might not like it much. But after the events you mentioned there is where the manga peaks so you might want to consider checking it out. As for the anime, it stops right at the Eclipse so if you didn't enjoy that segment of the story you can probably skip it.

Apparently our anime compatibility is "amazingly high". Never had 93% with someone, yet we only share 13 animes.

You really ought to check out Berserk, based on your list I think you'd really like it. The manga is better but the anime is also very good and a nice starting point. As far as mecha goes, you may enjoy Shin Mazinger and the Mazinkaiser OVAs for overwhelming manliness, the VOTOMS franchise for some of the best sci-fi anime out there, and Panzer World Galient and Aura Battler Dunbine for a bizarre mixture of fantasy mecha.
