Hello!
I've been an anime fan for over twenty years. The first anime that I can remember off the top of my head is Alps no shoujo Heidi that I watched when I was about four or five.
Nice to meet you :)

Hmmm you're right, Kei Tomiyama died in 1995 I think, and a new seiyuu replaced him for the second Gaiden series, I didn't remember that. So I just listened to some sentences he had and honestly, his tone is pretty different, much more mature and manly than the Yang Wen-li we all know (Kei Tomiyama also voiced Tetsuro from Ginga Tetsudou 999 for example...). Well I'm a big fan of Kei Tomiyama too so I may be a bit unfair but I'd say I prefered the first one of course ;) What I can say is that the voice of the second seiyuu ressembles that of Reinhard from what I heard (just a bit).

Yep I'll do just that I think when I have some free time, being a die hard Yang fan ;)

Hello !
Yeah you're right, I should watch some more GinEiDen Gaiden too, but I didn't like the first arc too much, I found it pretty far from being as good as the OVAs, plus there's no Yang Wen-li for now, and if you say that the following arcs are not better, I don't know if I'll resume watching it for the moment ;)

Awesome. So you are trying to read it, not speak it? ^^;; Or did you take classes too? Or do you think it's possible to learn to speak a language by yourself?

Oh, I really wanted to watch the Xenosaga series because it might have more yuri subtext. Uhm. Yeah. But the changes they made from the game were universally awful, so I dropped it.
*awkward because you don't have a location stated*
Do you read Japanese?

Random comment: Despite your profile pic, I see you didn't watch the Xenosaga anime. (Good for you though. ^^;; )

Oh, I'm sure Kaiba is worth watching. That's exactly the reason why I haven't watched it yet :D I expected it to be good, so I just dwl and wait for the entire anime to be out.

I can't really say that anime nowadays are shittier, I can't think of an old series that's as deep as Texhnolyze or as thought-provoking as Ghost Hound. It's just there isn't that much nowadays
Yeah, those are my thoughts too: today there is more anime for adults (This also happened with videogames, they matured as their consumers grew up) but there's so little of it in the sea of mediocrity and outright crap.
And then I realize that compared to then we have access to a lot more shit that in those days wouldn't have been subbed (or bought by TV stations).
Overall the late 90s and early 2000s featured some of the greatest anime ever made.
Yeah, frustrating, isn't it? That sth happened between then and now.(*mutters* The rabid moe crowd happened, that's for sure.)
The Shana movie was unexpectedly enjoyable too. And Shion no Ou is amazing. Well, I am biased as I've been hoping for an anime based on that manga. Still, it's one of my favorite anime of the year.
I hope that the second half of this year will have better things in store, so far I was only impressed with Kaiba :(
I still haven't watched Kaiba *sigh*.
Unfortunately the titles I've seen planned for the later half of the year don't exactly scream quality. :P

Fanservice is an issue for me not because it bothers me in itself, but because
1. ecchi 'komedy' stuff is such a mood breaker.
Case in point Rosario to Vampire: unlike the manga, the anime inserted pantyshots at every possible opportunity (Ubercool Vamp!Moka fighting, dramatic scene with girl falling off cliff etc) and this ruined the series. How can I feel for someone's loneliness-that-pushes-her-to-breaking when the camera hunts her panties all the freakin' time?
Mai HiME is a great example, actually: there was blatant fanservice just in the comedic first half, to draw the audience in. Imagine the Shizuru-Nao cliff scene with pantyshots and bouncing tits.
2. "tarnishes" the series.
Like I said, it's not just fanservice in the form of ecchi stuff. Recycled plots, character cast "diverse" enough to cater to lolicons, maid fans, miko fans etc. This, for me, is on the same page with "omfg, that's dumb" twists and details, i.e. makes the series lose points.
Another example: I liked Shakugan no Shana. I would have liked Shakugan no Shana more if the main chara wasn't a tsundere loli - not because tsundere lolis bother me, but because the character could have been more complex and cool.
Yes, I know anime needs to sell. I don't have a problem with that. It still makes it hard to rate series *laughs*.
I gave Shakugan no Shana a 9. So sometimes I wonder if today's anime is shittier or not. That was what I wanted to talk about with you *whistles*. I chose the subject of rating anime because rating leads to an automatic hierarchy where old and new series meet.

I wouldn't say that's a disadvantage. ;)
I think that being familiar with older series makes it more difficult to rate anime. For example blatant fanservice is so rampant nowadays (and not just in the form of pantyshots and the like) that it's easy to disregard it when the series has good plot and characterization, and rate that anime an 8 or a 9.
Still, when I order my list by rating, I realize these ratings don't actually reflect a hierarchy. Rozen Maiden and Shakugan no Shana with their loli crowd catering on equal footing with RahXephon, Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen and Noir? *wince*
Anyway, enough of my monologue, I'm curious how you manage this rating matter. ^^

Seeing a list with so many old kids series is pretty rare. :)
Anyway, I see you are reading Parasyte. It gets even better later on.
