I just wanted to say hello and tell you I appreciate your Samurai Champloo review. Most people who watch the series seen to ignore all its flaws. I agree with you that the plot was very disjointed. It seems the director wanted to do too much and failed to execute the series properly. What do you think took think went wrong with the series?
Watching Samurai Champloo at the moment. The sword fighting is fantastic, although I thought the whole "mixing music with the action" was done better with the jazz in Cowboy Bebop than the hip-hop in Samurai Champloo.
Enjoyable series so far, although lagging behind Watanabe's other major work at the moment I'm at in the series. Watanabe does have a talent for portraying conflicting personalities, though. Jin plays a great "straight-man", and Mugen's antics are continually entertaining.
I agree with you about Kimura. I thought he would be a better trainer than fighter. He would be great to teach the fighters at the gym the basics cause he was the most technically sound boxer of their group. And if anyone gets out of line, he can easily get that ass back in line.
In the manga he does eventually get that title when Mashiba changes weight classes again.
Just finished Hajime no Ippo - Kimura vs. Mashiba.
Great OVA. Felt like an extension of the series. As usual, great fighting. Kimura should have actually retired and become a trainer, though. I thought that would have been a better ending.
