I started watching anime back in the seventies with Speed Racer and Battle of the Planets. I didn't even know it was Japanese back then, it was just a cartoon. I didn't know the difference. When I became old enough to understand the difference, which was back around the time Robotech first aired here in the States, it was called "Japanimation". It wasn't until years later, after high school and some college, that I started watching anime again. At some point, while I wasn't paying attention, somebody decided to shorten the name. I don't know the history behind all that and really don't care, it just happened. Probably while I wasn't looking.
I got back into watching anime after my son was born, and became old enough to really pay attention to what was on television. I was married and working, not going out anymore or anything, and had time to kill. We started off with stuff like Dragonball Z, Pokémon, Escaflowne. Whatever was airing on Fox or Cartoon Network. As he got older it was the Toonami block and later on the Midnight Run and [adult swim]. Even though I had been watching for years it wasn't until I saw Cowboy Bebop that I finally got into anime as a hobby. So even though I'm way ahead of the curve as far as years go, I'm behind the majority of fans in terms of time spent...

I know you are a Ghost in the Shell fan, so I figured I would reccomend Armitage to you. I just watched the first movie, and it was pretty good. It is the same kind of cyberpunk cyborg/robot female police officer kind of thing. A little less philosophical, but still pretty good.
