In a word, depressing.
I sat through NHK, which, is ultimately all you can do for the first half of the series. For those of you unaware and distant from the actual plot, 22 year old college drop out is paranoid of --- the entire planet.
Tatsuhiro Satou will not leave his cramped apartment in fear of the outside, a hikkimori, shut in with friends who neither help nor further harm his situation much to his dismay.
There we're instances where Welcome to NHK made sense, while other moments, left me scratching my head. Why is he a shut in? What is NHK really about? If it's that bad wouldn't his parents think terribly of him? If he's a shut-in, what about income?
It's making me believe that there is a special department in Japan dedicated to the upkeep of there shut-in residents. As I said, NHK, is 'strange'. For the most part, animation is detailed , well representing the atmosphere and near claustrophobia of Satou's room. Unfortunately, that is almost ALL we as the viewer ever SEE. Ever.
For awhile, there is a story arch that resembles the atmosphere and game play of Final Fantasy XI, an MMORPG. In it, Satou further indulges in staying inside with a little more fuel added to his fire through computer games, I've seen the same plot device in chaos head which I couldn't rant anymore about, but here, the atmosphere seems that it'd have potential to carry on, however, the 'wool' is pulled from over our eyes revealing the dark truth to most online RPGs.
In a way NHK focuses on the protagonist out of sheer boredom. hikikomori and neet, Satou then becomes a bit of a lolicon, it doesn't help that a small girl whose aunt is a avid church attendee leaves her niece unattended to take on nightly 'visits' to one another in the park.
There are ups and downs to the series that, I couldn't bring myself to actually focus on. In one moment, you feel a little remorse for Satou, in another, you can't really feel anything at all despite all of the action on screen. Which takes to few and far between, to the point of becoming rather boring.
In an attempt to squeeze the life out of every cliche' theme anime episodes, there is, in fact a 'beach' episode. Where satou and his highschool lover are taking time off on a secluded island.
In the end, there is a lot of activity in NHK, from screen plays, questionable activities and game play, Satou goes through the ringer as a psychologically challanged individual who, says a lot but, feels very little.
It's almost a statement on the community of unemployed workers worldwide. Failed in school? Unemployed? They 'trap' themselves into rented apartments surviving on the most BASIC needs until they find the next outlet to pass time on. While it isn't 'funny', it is still entertainment, rather morbid with underlying themes of adulthood and community, NHK has it's own way of bringing the reality of 'life' into a form of art that I've never seen before.

Chaos head is what you get when you try and splice together one half of a visual novel and the other half a pc game. Set to a supernatural murder scene, Chaos Head, which didn't have the decentcy to translate itself into japanese follows the plotline to a game of the same name.
Takumi Nishijō walks into a gruesome murder scene, snatching one of the many hundred weapons that we're used at the crime scene and retreating to his steel container ontop of a building he continues to play his games as an Otaku within an Otaku's world. I can only exhale a sigh of disbelief when two other 'anime' girls are expressing there disgust of Takumi because he obsesses over resin figurines and plays video games all day.
I'm sorry, this is not ironic, this is not some underlying wink at fans or computer nerds out there, this means nothing. Stop trying to to uncover 'some thing' out of 'nothing.'. My softer inclinations of finishing this series of twist, turns, flashing lights and silly girls turning up in this guys life without the decency of offering sexual favor became the rot of the inside of the very series. School Days for example was a show that was capable of a very 'good' translation into animated format seeing as the entire game was animated and straight forward to begin with.
Chaos head is loud and obnoxious, trying to suck the life out of those who thought Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Welcome to NHK were either very funny, very clever or never watched them in there entirety. Chaos Heads 'characters', if you could call them that, are here as plot exposition. While it is indeed harder and harder to believe that popularity will see the face value of these many girls surrounding Takumi --- the actual story begins to fail in light of poor acting.
I can't believe I'm writing this.
So, for the most part. I'm not agreeing with most of the series as another 'successful' story from another game of the same name. In comparison to School Days, the move worked because of the level of suffering each of the characters endured, the types and the interaction amongst them on some level, albeit ethereal and vapid in chaos head provides some non-existent connection between me and the people on screen.
Violent? Sure, but that's if you haven't seen Apocolypse Zero or Ninja Scroll back during it's debut on VHS. Chaos head feels slow paced and a little off, with the hikikomori lifestyle turning into the new 'harem' plot line in anime, it's a wonder what will happen next until an original 'plot' comes along and actually shocks a few people. read more

12 Year olds grow up so fast!
Sixth grade was cake in comparison to poor Yuri Otani, who is begruddingly voted into the Alien Party at the beginning of her school year. Being singled out, she's amongst three total students who are apart of a special 'team' of alien cowgirls that traverse campus grounds when an alien happens to appear.
The anime is adapted from the manga of the same name, so a lot of continuity issues may occur once the series gets rolling, but that is not the purpose of this review. Set in no particular time frame, alien nine starts off as a quirky science fiction meets daily life anime series for these twelve-year old alien hunters. It's not easy of course as most of the nasties in the series range from strange to monstrously dangerous!
However, the three girls including Yuri Otani , Kumi Kawamura and Kasumi Tomine are put under the tutelage of Megumi Hisakawa acting as coach , nurse and instructor to each of the girls and there borgs. The borgs are these froghead 'weapons' that attach themselves to the girls heads, taking the brunt of damage and capable of morphing there wings for flight, defense and even drill like throngs for attacking.
Alien Nine, the series, is paced rather well, and the girls are simply acting there age. As a fan, I was hooked by the first episode, Nine is a series that catches you off guard, it is strange to say the least --- why exactly are these parents of the children so happy about throwing there daughters into the dangers of fighting off several aliens at any given time?!
While i am no stranger to a poor storyline, Alien Nine doesn't consist of plot holes but really an introduction or animated short of the manga. The manga, is a bit more detailed, with 3 volumes and 30 chapters which is a lot more in depth to the characters and issues that they all go through as the time passes. I won't say that there is a sympathy for the girls but they really hold there own against the increased difficulty of every alien they mean to catch.
With a supporting cast, interesting story and decent enough beginning and exceptionally wonderful ending theme, Alien Nine is one of the most underwatched series of it's time. Namely, due to it's ending which is so abrupt and ingeniously styled into the ending theme, that one could miss it and move on. The manga, for the most part explains things perfectly but the anime series is to short and bitter sweet.
Alien Nine is equally bizarre and character focused. I believe that anyone taking a look will enjoy is multilayered plot but, if you are like me, I found 4 episodes to be WAY to short, especially if a conclusion wasn't set in stone.
For what it's worth, the animation is fluid, characters are golden and it's a short glimpse into all the coming of age shows people love so much. I know when I revisit my child-hood memories of the sixth grade, it didn't include days of skating around the campus with lacross nets and talking frog helmets, it was about friends and the connections you make with them. It's short and sweet, pick up the manga it's definately worth it. read more

So you want to splice together the bastard child of Mecha, beautiful girls and over exaggerated breast in anime?
Well go right ahead! That is the basics of Knights of Ramune. While the socially unacceptable antics of one Cacao and the flat chested Parfait are highly short of such shows as Ranma 1/2 or even DearS. The show picks up in a world where a line of individuals are trying to do what? Why take over the universe!
Cacao the dark-skinned magic user disrobes several times while her partner albeit, eccentric Parfait is the pilot of the experimental mecha. Keep in mind, both of these holy virgins in order to operate both the Mecha and there magic must be fully nude.
Now, you have the head honcho lamune, or as I pronounce it, ramune! Who is a charismatic baratone breast loving nancy boy with a ship filled with women. I am not making this up.
One picking up the title would be surprised by the amount of lesbianism in the show, and how blatant the characters are about the sexuality. There are a few scenes that turn gross and borderline pornography but are white washed by the light humor of the rest of the series.
Now, there will be a short following of individuals who actually know who or for that matter anything about Ramune. For one, it would be the horrible dubbing. As a show back in 97 when few of you we're even conceived, Ramune was on either VHS or DVD which was highly expensive.
So, for the most part, the translation of some scenarios for the characters felt a tad weird. Not to mention Ramune molesting his highest in command in front of the plastered feminine plaque on his wall.
I -- am again, not making things up to try and add flavor to this review. But, there is so much going on in Knights of Ramune that it launched two prequels and one sequel to a prequel. Now keep in mind, this show is an ecchi attempt to combine robot weilding 'babes' and breast grabbing.
Which has never been so sexually stimulating even in hentai. I give the company a lot of props for writing a story-line that the male character actually gets away with molesting his female subordinates. I know, I may be stepping on a few toes with the women out there, but it was pretty interesting.
Now, there is some talk of being virgin's a talking rice ball and the male protagonist having way to much eyeliner. But it is so hard to follow with all of the sexual overtones sprinkled throughout the film. The guy is in a flying playboy mansion while two virgins who strip down to the buff fly around the world trying to stop him in an experimental mecha using magic?
It's almost TO unbelievable , but after the third epsiode, you throw logic out the window and really take in the above par artwork for it's time. With a plot twist that will make you cry uncle and characters who, for the most part 'do' as there told, knights of ramune is the guilty pleasure of every anime fan. We've either seen a show similar that at one point and time was so good it was bad simply because of nudity. Looking back at it now I can see the plot holes, terrible storyline but then, the breast distract me completely. read more

Afro Samurai was an exceptional five episode series that started out in 2007 with it's debute on Spike Television. The series was a small success given the science fiction spin off of epic battles taking place in a japan like era. Not to be a show short on fanservice or violence, Afro Samurai garnered a pretty decent following doing well since it's inception.
Now it's been nearly two years since the original ended on a somber note, afro, having attained the crowning jewel of fighters around the world, the number one headband faces off with his child-hood friend turned partial cyborg Jinno.
With Jinno considerably more 'human' in the last half hour of episode five, it was confusing that in resurrection almost 70% of his body is indeed cyborg. While this little plot hole is never explained in resurrection a number of other interesting twist on the timeline between afro becoming a sword master at Jinno's school and Jinno's sister.
Having attained the number one headband, afro samurai or as simply put, "afro" has become depressed, isolating himself into an old building while carving figurines out of wood imitating chess pieces. Except these chess pieces are a diverse group of the individuals he has defeated. This turns the entire scene of a brooding bearded afro to a river with a large bridge he is walking by. After fishing apparently, afro is sporting one of the largest head coverings i've ever seen in leu of his signature hair style. Attacked on the bridge by a pair of fencers who -- for the most part simply annoy afro.
Here is where I see a problem. Afro , for a samurai has had countless years of training by the sword. So, there shouldn't be a problem dispatching a pair of fencers with one hand right? Well, he stumbles a bit before the fighting actually ensues and out of no where cuts them up like sushi in a restaurant!
I feel that this particular scene could've gone on for atleast two or three minutes, but, to affirm how much of a bad-ass fighter afro has 'become' due to the immortalized status of the number one headband, he takes on another group of combatants with a scary ease.
This is a change from the original show which played out like a dance in most cases, the violence was indeed graphic but, on screen afro moved with a graceful speed that made you stand back in awe of his skill. From using bullet shards in the first films to dispatch a group behind him, to his scabbard becoming an extension of his arm.
The most the fight scenes represent is how eager the producers wanted to put out another movie or how lazy the choreographers have become in creating fighting scenes that result in a bit more than a few seconds of hack and slash action. the exposition in this film has increased, with a few characters giving speeches on there plot to destroy afro while the entire 'point' of this story is rather shaky.
So -- you get to the ending of the movie and all of this for what? A sequel? I'm sorry but resurrection couldn't live up to the five episodes of the original by a long shot. With a good portion of the films budget ending up in Mr. Jacksons pocket or the artwork which is beautiful, there is a lack of story and balance to the rest of the film.
Oh, this is a long one too. Where afro samurai was original a five part series, twenty-seven minutes a piece with one or two episodes dedicated to flash backs, resurrection clocks in over an hour, so be prepared to sit for awhile. There are some other bits that translated into the film nicely, such as afro's appreciation for lemonade, another short arch about the current 'owner' of the number two headband and what shaped out to be another act of 'vengeance' I feel that the series was all to rushed and flamboyant to really draw the fans from the first series in.
MAL only list Samuel L. Jackson as the executive producer, who has shown up in plenty of films, even the winter blockbuster "The Spirit", but, if there is one thing that the spirit has shown us, is that the shinnier and flashier the effects are -- lack of actual plot and story to tie things together make the film fall flat on its back.
Resurrection can be a hit or miss to some fans of the original series. One, they could enjoy it for it's attention to detail, impressive visuals and stunning artwork. Or the latter could hate the film for compressing such an intriguing story for a combination of breast shots and non impressive fight scenes.
It isn't all terrible, Rza has reprised his role as producer of the music -- and I must say it is truly great to listen to the hard bass to hack n' slashing fun!
If you're a fan of fight scenes, I'd suggest the original before diving into resurrection, the fighting and gore are present, but, the plot makes light of the battles so they are hardly engaging. I gritted my teeth towards the one final end where the ending 'boss' of all this is taken out in little more than a few seconds and afro is left to express himself as solemnly as possible,
"Whenever you're ready."
Yeah, not even the sweet growl of samuel l jacksons voice over can save this drift wood. read more

I'll admit, I picked this one up for one scene that was floating around the internet to use for material, but, the opening scene was reminescent of some old movie such as krull or the cartoon He-man. In it there is a woman, encased in ice(or some thing) that is in a chamber full of shards of beautiful gems and the like.
I skipped ahead to my scene, enjoyed it and moved on. Well, what more do you expect out of a hentai that spells it's name wrong and has the premise of some hunter with a fist full of beautiful women at his disposal? Are you looking for an hour or so more worth of entertainment?
How about beautiful women? Sex? Tentacle scenes and supremely over powered bad guys and the single sword to stop them all? Well look no further, I will admit, good hentai has gone awry since most of the titles focus on minute long sex, mosaic's over every form of badly drawn anatomical privates and lot's of talking.
Some of the time the guy isn't doing much besides laying on his back moving his hips slightly while the girls get off on multiple orgasms. I will assure you, there are plenty of those in this series (much like others) that might get you odd looks if you leave your door open and the volume up.
So, putting aside the lack of plot, the funny areas where a tongue shouldn't go and cunnilingus's that last for maybe 10 minutes before the actual bedroom nasty ensues. Is well, a 'hentai', I don't really remember the character names and why should I this serves one purpose - while the scenes were less than enjoyable and may not insight a complete flame inside of you that you would expect, there is plenty of mumbo jumbo talk about the end of the world and some other stuff if you choose to pay attention.
Art is subpar, the girls walk around like stiff advertisement's for breast implants, the guy is a loser and the monsters are nasty. Enough said. read more

"I found out, that she rides the same train as me."
Well, this is turning out to be a fun ride.
Hop aboard the train wreck waiting to happen that is school days, or more notoriously known as "Nice Boat.".
While based on the manga / visual novel PC title, School Days is a episodic love story which encompases the joe every anime charater, Makoto.
When he makes his appearance in the first episode, you might believe he's a docile, caring, friendly individual that goes out of his way to help his child-hood friends. That the entire series will be cute, cuddly, fun, that there is no way that the characters will be emotional time bombs waiting to detonate after a certain event plows through there young lives and we're left with nothing but the dust of that catastrophic event.
To say that School Days is a shounen or Harem anime is putting the light-hearted titles such as clannad, air and even Shuffle to rest as 'kid shows' in comparison. Our cast of characters are not super human, they carry on very basic lives while in high school, they eat, sleep around the idea that one day, after the other, will bring them closer to love.
By them, I mean Makoto, and by love, I mean sex.
Makoto, as probably outlined in a lot of reviews i've read lately, is a pervert, a useless b-stard and so on. Which is true, I found him to be very, bashful, easily frustrated but, as the show matured grew tiresome of simply loving one person, he wanted more.
So, here we have a number of students who, serendipitously know one another from either middle school, a friend, friends of friends or other. Regardless, it boils down to the relationship Makoto has, not with his girlfriend in the very beginning Kotonoha, but his friend that he exchanges notes with during some period, Sekai.
Ever helpful, sekai is actually the golden retriever, seemlessly weaving kotonoha and Makoto together in what one believes a 'true' friend would do.
I liked school days, not for the violence, but, the character development that unfolded the same way watching a soap opera on public television. The characters that come and go, are not, by the least 'defined' by an entire episode, unravalled, analyzed or even prodded by story arch's that I've seen the trend in -those- titles, but, rather reveal flaws, wants and desires as the story unfolds.
As one action, while simple, one misguided slip of indiscretion cost the happiness and mental stability(or emotional) of a lot of people. While school days tackles some weird outcomes to this one event, such as teen pregnancy, insanity and confusion amongst the student body, I was so happy to see a title with the pair to actually push the envelope.
What if the girls in shuffle we're suicidal, literally fighting after the male protagonist made a choice early on in the series to 'date' one of the cast members to the disdain of the others. What then? Would the series end? Oh happy day?
Of course not! School days is a snow ball that collides with a small village, it's a catastrophe towards the end that leaves your mind blank and shaking your head,
"what the hell just happened?!?"
I'm sure anyone with half the sense would probably know by now one of the out comes, but, it's not really the end that makes this anime such a great emotional experiance, which, by far is completely lacking in some of the titles that are focused on everyone being happy after being rejected. The only other title that came as close to emotional content was clannad, but, that 'still' ended on a 'happy' note, regardless if the two twins we're crying.
In the end, school days is a realistic view on the human heart, the stability of some people and how despicable a person with views of his own selfish gain will push everyone else he cares about away.
I dare you not to grin towards the end, when the male protagonist actually gets what he deserves, I felt accomplished to see it myself, anyone disagreeing is either praising him for his actions or severely mentally ill. read more

Kite Liberator is an actual sequel to the currently classified, 'prequel' of the adult themed police drama.
Unlike Sawa from Kite, our protagonist isn't abused by an officer or anyone of official rank. Instead, she follows informants for her information in her place of business and online.
Monaka is a real contrast in the Kite themed sequel, sporting glasses and a highschool suit by day and by night exacts assassination jobs with deadly accuracy and planning. The story isn't very straight forward, accordingly, the characters introduced serve as pit stops in between Monaka's daily 'life' of assassination and working at a diner. Coming across a police officer who has been tailing Monaka as the angel of death asks her out thus adding some conflict in her life which is unfortunately short lived.
Kite Liberator retains the 'style' from the first film, I noticed a considerable amount of CG art for a cleaner relatively straight laced film which is nice. Unlike the original, our characters emote similarly to kiddy films, with there faces turning red and losing a lot of the adult themed art style.
It's fresh, but, I felt like the film did a lot of work confusing the watcher than becoming a legitimate sequel. In no way does the original actually link with Liberator aside from the weapon Monaka is fond of and the unknown organization she performs assassinations for. While it does focus on Monaka's killings and classifies these men as 'bad', there really isn't a connection found in Kite on how her assassinations impact the characters around her.
It's almost like Monaka is killing in another world where one lone officer is the only true witness to her trademark 'wings' left behind at the crime scenes. Those of you looking immediately at the name and expecting more of the same sex scenes from the original can look elsewhere, instead of splicing sex organs in the most 'random' scenes throughout the previous film, liberator mingles with the idea that most of the crimminals are bad men who are simply 'perverse' rather than corrupt.
Monaka is a stronger character mentally than Sawa who was sexually assaulted regularly by her gaurdian from the time she was a little girl into her late teens. While the series of events nod to kite, that Sawa is infact 'closer' than we all think she is, none of the questions are answered from the previous series. We do however take a look at many of the prior characters relatives which, for the most part remain unbiased to Sawa and her gaurdian.
While Monaka is also stronger shes well versed in combat, using everything at her disposal from knives, pens and a grappling hook device along with some amazing acrobatic work.
There are two few action scenes to really make worth of the 50+ minutes that Monaka is cavorting on screen with her double lives but the plot that is developing in space(yes, space) some how relates to yet another 'plot' that is ended upruptly by the credits. While the story has enough plot holes to fall through, the characters are much more vibrant and nearly 'human' as the show progresses showing that sex in anime isn't a neccessity as much is violence. read more
