Alright, I'd LOVE to say this was a good series, but personally I'm glad it's only two volumes, because I got sick of some of the alterations. I know it's "based" off the games, but I see very little similarities left after one character was altered. I've been apart of the .hack fandom since it began in the States with //SIGN and the first four games.
Moving along, there will be some spoilers, but it's a two-book series and probably anyone who is reading this has already played the games anyways. The manga began with one major changed that sort of ticked me off, Cubia's not a monster you fight, he's your party member! LOLWUT? So he can Data drain too, and Kite and him go off to destroy the phases to save the Lost Ones. Because of this change, portions of the plot where screwed with royally, including the Mia/Macha fight, Corbenik, amongst various other moments. Not only was the four-game and insanely-long series squished into two books, but it was altered to fit into said two books.
I honestly don't get why they even made Cubia a PC in X-Fourth. It didn't even make sense. His character was a pain and to any .hack fan it's obvious that Cubia working with Kite is just going to end badly for the party. Cubia ends up kidnapping Kite and wants to suck him up and use is power to make sure he never dies. Hey, at least BlackRose still destroyed the bracelet. Roll in the final battle, which isn't against Corbenik, it's again Morganna! Excuse me? She's never made an appearance save for voice, why would she suddenly appear to fight them, skipping Phase 8? Oh and Azure Flame God? Trying to turn it GU on us? But then again, at that point that was probably the only way to end it properly.
With this series, it's obvious that CC2 and Square-Ennix are having some competition to see who can milk their golden series for more money. They know the old .hack fans will still buy it because it is what it is, and because it's .hack they'll say they like it no matter how screwy they make the plot. Though I have to hand it to CC2, they've made the most alternative realities for their cash cow. read more

Okay, first off, some of you may be turned off by this series because of its...
1. Left-to-Right format
or 2. American/Canadian Author... ness...
But you know what? Tough nuts. This is an amazing series, trust me on that. My copy of volume one of Dramacon is my most battered and loved manga I own. And I own a lot of manga.
Please take note, for this review to work well, I do need to include a few main plot points. Consider this your warning.
Anyways, the story begins with Christie and her boyfriend, Derek, off to her first Anime Convention, Yatta! Con. Christie is at the Artist's Alley with the two of theirs manga series, "Wary City". At the very begining, things seem to be off on the wrong foot with her and Derek. She gets annoyed, and heads herself off into the wilderness that is the crowds at an Anime Con (And oh, we know them well). Bumping into Matt, it's practically love at first sight, though she won't really admit it just yet. Matt conforts her, and she heads back to her table. Later on, it turns out, Matt's got a secret. He cannot see through his left eye. Though with this fact revealed, Christie loves him just the same, and life goes on.
Volume two introduces Bethany, who is Christie's New artist (I won't say why~). She loves to draw, however, her mother's opinion is that being an Artist is a Hobo job (Which, I have to admit, has its truth). Bethany trucks on through, having little adventures with or without Christie as the book goes on.
Volume three ties it all together with an touching end to Bethany's side, and a clearly happy ending for both Christie and Bethany. Oh yeah, and something good is there for Matt and Christie too. But I'll spare the juicy details, because that's why you read the books.
The story developts at a good pace, each volume presenting itself with a turn around scene that keeps me re-reading it over and over.
As for characters, there's nothing single-sided about them. Nothing seems to be just black and white. There seems to be a bit of realism in each character, even if it is in the romance genre. Between Matt's eye and Bethany's mother, though they seem extreme, such can happen, no matter what the odds.
Overall, I highly recomend this series. It's touching, it's funny, and a tear-jerker. read more
