I see what you mean about the Gundam compilations, though I suspect those flaws are also present in the original series. I'm glad to hear that you'll give the OVAs a try, though, as they're generally pretty good.

Mmm, now you remind me, I remember how the pacing picks up after the twentieth episode. And there are definitely similarities between Lelouch and Reinhard, true: they both have a knack for political theatre and they are both irrationally obsessed with their sisters. Not that there have been any SPACE BATTLES in Code Geass . . . yet. I think Reinhard dislikes the whole system of the aristocracy, and I think he is naturally ambitious. But you're right that his obsession isn't logical. On the other hand, few people in real life are as dedicated to democratic ideals as Yang is.
And I'm afraid I haven't seen Babylon 5, though a friend of mine is a fan and said it was quite good.

I see what you mean. The harsh, political world of LotGH isn't really the right place for Kircheis. He's too nice. But I'm glad to hear you got over his presence!
I can't really imagine LotGH as a live action show . . . perhaps you're right. It's true that back when they made it, animation was presumably the only cost-effective way to have that many spaceships in battle at once.
Where to start with Gundam? Well, you could start anywhere. Personally, I have three suggestions:
1) You could watch the compilation movie trilogy of the original series (starting with this one). These movies really cut away a lot of the more unnecessary bits of the original television series, have better sound and are (in my opinion) an improvement on the TV series. Not all Gundam compilation movies are better than the series that they compile, but I think the first three movies definitely are.
2) You could watch The 08th MS Team, which is one of the best parts of the original Gundam timeline. It has decent animation and a good 'gritty' feel. On the other hand, it's less political than some of the other parts of the franchise.
3) You could watch the latest, Gundam 00. This has the shiniest animation and a lot of what made Wing and SEED popular: prettyboys and angst. On the other hand, shiny animation isn't necessarily going to attract you if you're happy watching LotGH.
