I tried reading some of the Berserk manga, but most of that was just to see how the anime could have ended. I will agree that it looks better on manga, but that could possibly be because it is and has to be more detailed. And at this point I'm not too motivated to go into the manga since it would feel like too much of an obligation.

True but the fact that such stories happen in real life is what makes it worthwhile. For instance I hate such people that try to take advantage of others so brutally, that is one of the reasons I kept watching: My core is Sorrow.

That's definitely true. I'm not saying it looks bad, in fact it looks really.. clean, I guess is what I mean.
Bakemonogatari was a bit too pretenscious for me to be truly great. I felt it took itself too seriously and had that smug aura of "I am so artsy you don't understand" that I find in most litteratue I read (although that is not saying a lot) if you know what I mean.
I thought so too, and I really liked it. It's probably my favourite last episode of anything, if not then definitely among them. But I don't think it broke the tone per se, more that it followed the tone og'f Shichika himself. Broken, angy, nonchalant etc.
