Dream Saga: the best manga you never read.

Dream Saga is possibly one of - if not the - most obscure manga I've ever read. If I ever ask anyone if they've read it, they look at me like I'm crazy. The only reason people would even recall hearing about is because of its author, Megumi Tachikawa of Saint Tail fame.

Regardless, I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys shoujo, romance, or anything of the sort, but wants something new and fresh added to it.

Story: I found this to be the best aspect of the story. The plot was just so fresh and original, a very unique take on the magical girl (and magical boy!) genre. The romance element was actually a very major factor to the plot, rather than just having the main character love some guy and make him important in the very end of it. *cough*MermaidMelody*cough* This series actually moved me to tears at the end of it. I'd elaborate even further, but I don't want to give you any spoilers, so I'll just end it here!

Art: I liked Megumi Tachikawa's style - the art was generally very smooth and graceful, a classic shoujo look. The only thing that really bugged me about it was that the characters' mouths ALWAYS had a gap in them. Look at any page.

Characters: Yuuki was a good female lead, headstrong and brave rather than a whiny, stupid brat like Usagi or other protagonists. It seemed like she actually knew what she was doing, and it was really her who pulled the group together. The character Takaomi (well, the one in the dream world) was very funny at times and serious at others, a nice balance. He had an interesting backstory. The other characters were all fine too, but it was those two that were the best.

Overall, Dream Saga is a great series for those who want a classic shoujo/romance/drama story that's original. The story was short, unfortunately, but I think that if it was any longer, it would've dragged on. A great read for all Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon, or Mermaid Melody fans! read more
