Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S (Railgun S) is the sequel of Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (Railgun), a side-story of Toaru Majutsu no Index (Index) series. For those of you who are not familiar with Railgun, it is recommended to watch the previous series first or at least find out about the characters' backgrounds. Story wise, Railgun S offers a new story, not a continuation of Railgun.
Background (for those who are not familiar with the previous series) :
Railgun S revolves around Misaka Mikoto and the gang. The series take place in Gakuen-toshi or Academy City, an advanced city dominated by students with super powers
...
(espers). The super powers are divided into 5 levels, with level.5 being the highest. Those without super powers are referred to as level 0 or non-espers. The main character, Misaka Mikoto, is one of the only 7 level.5 espers in Academy City. She's rated the 3rd strongest of the 7, given the nickname "Railgun" due to her ability of emitting and manipulating electricity, converting it into a powerful beam cannon if given a proper conductor. There's also Shirai Kuroko, Misaka's roommate and admirer. She's a level.4 teleporter and works as a member of Judgement, a public peace-keeping and order-maintaining force.
Story :
Taken from a chapter of Index, Railgun S revolves around The Sisters Arc. The Sisters Project is conducted by the scientists of Academy City, involving the creation of 20.000 clones of Misaka the Railgun to be slaughtered by the strongest esper in Academy City, the Accelerator. The project is believed to be able to increase Accelerator's level to 6.
I've already watched Index before so The Sisters Arc is not a new thing for me. But this arc is retold and developed greatly in Railgun S, revealing details which are not present in Index.
Art :
For me, the art is very likeable. The art in Railgun has already impressed me and it is even better in Railgun S. J.C Staff's animation always satisfies me.
Sound :
fripSide is definitely inseparable from the Railgun series. All 3 opening songs from the previous series (only my railgun, level 5 judgelight, future gazer) are by fripSide. The opening song of Railgun S is 'Sister's Noise' also by fripSide. Love all the songs.
No complaint whatsoever for the voice actors/actresses, especially Arai Satomi (voice actress of Shirai Kuroko). Such perfect voice for comical situations xD. BGM is so-so, good enough in every scene but nothing special.
Character :
The obvious improvement in Railgun S is the emotional conflict shown in Misaka after discovering the existence of The Sisters Project. Emotional scenes involving shock, anger, and desperation are displayed better in Railgun S.
Enjoyment :
I enjoyed Railgun S more than the previous series mainly because so far Railgun S only follows 1 main story line (The Sisters Arc), while the previous one had more story lines.
Overall :
Railgun S is recommended to fans of the previous series, those who are new to the series are also welcome to try. Despite other great series this season such as Shingeki no Kyojin and Hataraku Maou-sama, I won't forget to watch Railgun S once the new episode is out.
