Both series involves making contracts with ephemeral beings that possess/come sealed into small objects that turn into gigantic weapons. Story wise, there's nothing similar about them. But "Friendship and Teamwork" is a big focus on both. There is no extermination in shaman king, but it involves fighting similarly powered enemies just like in Owari no Seraph.

the core theme of these two anime is "aim high" "Never give up without trying" and "dream about the future". In both. Initially, the main characters are ordinary nobodies, then, they are faced with a figurative "wall" that they must overcome(yielding ends the story then and there). After successfully jumping over this hurdle, they become well known and successful and then they discovered that now that they are successful, they are now faced with a task/goal far bigger than what they ever imagined(at this point, the progression is now different, but Love Live 2 fixes that). theme wise, there is this pushy character who gets all his/her friends to join him on his endeavor. this rubs off to their friends and then before they know it, they all already have the go getter attitude. These themes are also embodied in the songs used in the show as well (Sorairo Days, Susume => Tomorrow;Rap is a Man's Soul,Bokura wo ima no naka de)
