He's referencing Hunter x Hunter where they use that as an anagram for "Ging", everybody.

Hey, TJ. I'm sorry for missing out on the chance to play some games with you last weekend. I shouldn't have been so quick to use that Xbox Live code you gave me. I feel bad about that...

That said, I hope you have a good week.

Pete-face | 04-07-13, 12:34 PM
No, that was my mistake. Sorry about that.

There's no common setting or character between the two games. However, both games sort of...express themselves similarly. They're both rich in dramatic folklore and artistic beauty. George Kamitani writes his signature clearly on the games he works on.

I'm getting sidetracked here, but I recently read a discussion that was saying how certain game designers have strong visions for their games that the player can identify throughout said designer's body of work. Ken Levine was brought up, as was Hideki Kamiya.I'm not really going anywhere with this, but I do find it cool and fascinating that one person can have such dramatic influences on a video game.

Yeah, like that game! The controls in Kid Icarus Uprising did take me a few hours to get used to. They're sharp and satisfying if you can get comfortable with them.

I'll check it out then! Also, I've only played Toe Jam & Earl once for a few minutes. I didn't take the time to understand how it plays. Also, it seems like it's at its best as a multi-player game. Since it is your favorite Genesis game, what do you like about it?

To answer your question, my favorite Genesis game is probably Gunstar Heroes. I like the butt-kicking atmosphere that he visuals and music convey, and it's just a blast to play. There are so many unique scenarios and the level of control the player is given feels great. It's a similar satisfaction that I get from playing as Simon Belmont in Super Castlevania IV.

Sonic CD is one of the best games I've played. The effort put into the port certainly attributes to that.

Yeah, you're right. Mistakes come naturally when we try to accomplish things. Instead of being impossibly scalable walls, challenges are really just hurdles we can jump over. We may reach the finish line with some cuts and bruises, but that's usually better than quitting to avoid those injuries.

One of those two Fire Emblem games you haven't finished is Sacred Stones, right? I've beaten Path of Radiance and Shadow Dragon, but I haven't finished Radiant Dawn. The last chapter in Awakening is available to me, but the side-chapters and skirmish battles are keeping me from starting it! I might try to beat it today if I finish my homework early.

Yeah, I really dig the original Bioshock. I finished Bioshock Infinite yesterday, and I think it's just as incredible as the original. Surprisingly, I like both games for many different reasons. Like Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite plays with your uncertainty and expectations in really interesting ways. Thematically, they're very compelling. As games, they're just really darn entertaining. It's a great series.

I really got a kick out of Timesplitters 3. The humor is great, and I like that it carries into the multi-player as well.

Cool. What kind of food did they serve? I had a similar restaurant expedition on Thursday.

Speaking of Xbox Live stuff, I enjoyed playing the demo of that Phantom Breaker beat-em-up. I was surprised! I'm picky about the art direction, but it does pop.

Pete-face | 04-06-13, 3:29 PM
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope your dad is holding up well. That must really hurt...

Going to fun events with your dad with surely cheer him up, I bet. I haven't been to a comedy club before, but I'd like to.

Unless I'm missing something, Momohime isn't in Odin Sphere. The setting and characters in that game are separate from Muramasa.

By the way, you can see a comparison between Muramasa's original script and the re-written dialogue for the Vita version on Siliconera. It has so much more breath!

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/04/05/muramasa-rebirths-new-translation-compared-to-ignitions-wii-version/

Oh, Darkstalkers 3 is great! The stages, characters, animation, and artwork...it's all fantastic. The combat is so silky and fast-paced too. I also have the game on the Sega Saturn (Vampire Savior), and that version has a few additional characters from Darkstalkers 2 (Vampire Hunter). Darkstalkers 2 has a calmer style of gameplay, but it's still fun to play.

I didn't notice that there was a lock-on mechanic! I was really struggling just following the movements of the demo's boss. Regardless, the controls seemed a bit cramped. They probably take some time to get used to.

I wasn't aware of the Monster World series until Sega re-released Monster World IV not too long ago. That game looks interesting, and some of the music (like that song you linked me to) sounds nice.

You may like this song that was written for Monster World IV, but wasn't put into the game: https://soundcloud.com/doublebytes/wonderful-southern-islands
(Check out the awesome cover art too!)

I watched that entire Game Grumps episode. Grant Kirkhope seems like a really cool guy. I played a bit of Banjo-Kazooie the other day, and now Mumbo's transformation spell is funnier than it was before.

The Sonic CD port that Sega released in 2011 is very well-crafted. I didn't play the game on the Sega CD, but from what I've heard, the visuals were converted perfectly and the frame-rate is even better. It runs really well, and it even includes the option to switch between the two soundtracks that were made for the game.

Haha. Comparing it to Zero Escape was definitely a compliment!

Yeah, the Hunter x Hunter song was right up my alley. I love that "go-getter", high-spirited rock sound.

So I hear! You gotta buy it sometime!

March was alright. Some missteps here and there, but I'm feeling good right now.
I've been trying to focus on my schoolwork lately with some success. Procrastination still gets the better of me at times, but I'm going to overcome it little by little. Japanese 103 is my favorite class, and the lessons and are getting tougher and tougher. It's still really fun though. As far as games go, I've been playing Bioshock Infinite lately. I'm still not much of a fan of the first-person shooter genre, but I'm enjoying the experience. I've also put some time into Fire Emblem: Awakening during my spring vacation. That game is awesome.

I've enjoyed what I've played of the series. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future is my current favorite of the bunch. The story is crazy and sweet and sad and just great.

I agree with you, Nico, and Renton. Santuary does a beautiful job recapping the first two games together with cinematics, but I just like listening Simple and Clean more.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend TJ. Let's play some games over Xbox Live next week!

This response is overdue, but its good to hear that you're feeling better!

It's too bad that you guys had to miss the convention. Are you considering going to next year's instead? Conventions are a blast, so you should plan ahead!

In my opinion, you should wait for the Vita release. The screen may be smaller, but the game should look fantastic on the Vita's slick screen. The new characters and script could improve the experience as well (Such as breaking up repetition and delivering a more engaging story).

It might be a good idea to play the original release first though to see if you like it. Some people find finishing the game with both characters to be boring, but if you really enjoy what it offers then Muramasa's well-forged, sharp action won't dull out. (How do you like that one?)

My opinion on fighting games isn't very valuable since I'm not skilled enough at them to really assess their strengths and weaknesses. That said, I enjoy Street Fighter x Tekken for it's highly-expressive characters and their cool moves. The tag-team fighting leads to some awesome combos and amusing character interactions. I also like the overwhelmingly colorful and flashy art direction. I feel that Street Fighter x Tekken tries to do so much, and that it succeeds in many ways.

I tried to play the Monster Hunter 3 demo on the 3DS, but I couldn't get comfortable with the camera. I kept instinctively presses L and R to change my perspective!

Yeah, all of those weapons look awesome. Seeing as how Monster Hunter 4 will be online, you will probably get to use the Hunting Horn more effectively, right?

The Angel Beats tune sounds like it could fit in a puzzle room from Zero Escape. I'd say an "Aquarium" room.

This song from Hunter x Hunter is my favorite of the bunch.

"Adrenaline" certainly sounds like it would play during a moment of vulnerability. It's an effective song.

Have a good weekend, TJ! I'll leave you with a song off of Muramasa's arrange album:

Did you see the newest Monster Hunter IV trailer?! That sword & shield combination weapon looks boss! I'm already impressed by the animation and sound effects in this game.

And did you hear that NIS America is localizing The Guided Fate Paradox? Awesome, huh? Here's the announcement trailer, which is almost the same as the one you showed me.

The yellow crystals are hidden well right from the start. I definitely think the challenging of finding them adds to the game's appeal. It's been a long time since I've played The Crystal Shards, but I remember having fun collecting all of the shards. I totally forgot that the game used the D-Pad though!

Thanks for that link. The characters really up the price for the iOS version. Anyway, I'll always be a little biased towards the 3DS version since I had a good time streetpassing during last year's Comic-Con.

I understood that you like Espgaluda II's difficulty, but the way I worded my response may have read otherwise. Sorry for the confusion!

Going by your impressions, the environments and soundtrack really come alive when you're engaged in the gameplay. I felt that way after playing Rez. Watching it is fine, but there's something more captivating about that game's audio and visuals when you personally have control over them.

The Cave games that were only released in Japan are indeed pricey. On the other hand, Deathsmiles and Akai Katana are very affordable. I might jump on one of those in the near future.

Vanillaware as a name strikes me as compelling. It's hard to say why, but I really like it. You have a good point though. Visually, their games are like all of Baskin Robbins flavors rolled into one. From a gameplay perspective, maybe their games can be seen as simplified, or vanilla, yet satisfying.

By the way Aksys Games is bringing Muramasa to the Vita! I'm looking forward to seeing how their writers handle the script. Also, there are going to be four additional characters to play as. I love George Kamitani's character designs:

http://www.maql.co.jp/special/game/vita/oboromuramasa/special/index.html

I've only play as Jack so far, but I'd like to try out Douglas and Mathilda next.

Zack & Wiki got really challenging towards the end. The motion controls weren't always reliable, and game overs could lead to a lot of lost progress.

I still listen to the Elebits soundtrack regularly. I really appreciate it when I want to unwind.

If you're interested in Street Fighter X Tekken at all, you should watch this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nB9DXShnxWs

The person narrating the video talks about how the game has been received since it launched last year while showing off some solid matches. I think this is a great game, so I have no trouble recommending it.

Phantom Breaker looks okay, but I find the character voices to be pretty distracting. The art direction isn't winning me over either.

WarioWare is a strangely fitting comparison! I felt like I was jumping from one event to another in just seconds during the demo.

I've been thinking about how I'd like to play more SHUMPs lately, so that influenced my song choices. Crisis Force is one of those Japan-only games that I would love to see on the Virtual Console.

Interesting choices! Are you a fan of these Taito games? Anyway, Turn and Try has an enjoyable rhythm, and the weird vocal effects add to the uniqueness of the song.

I like how the melody changes in that DonDokoDon song. It has a fun, panicky sound to it.

I feel somewhat uneasy listening to this third song! It's very strange, but I can appreciate the song's complexity. The piano-like melody that comes in around the two minute mark is very cool.

Back to my homework!
