About Jym

I am an artist/photographer and teach Photoshop at a community art school.
I discovered anime rather late in life. I probably do not fit the profile of the typical fan. I have always loved animation as well as the underground comics that were so popular in the 60's and 70's. What really got me started with anime was Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. I loved his ability to connect with his inner child. I too love to go back and feel like a child again, that feeling of magic and wonderment. I watched all his movies that Disney brought to the US. I also was intrigued with the differences between the American and Japanese culture and mythology. Their culture was so fresh and interesting to me.
I am also very interested in the difference between the inner workings of the human mind and our public behavior, the innocent child, the erotic fantasies, wanting to love and be loved and the dark, demonic thoughts that most of us have. My tastes in movies run from The Princess Bride to Kill Bill and a great independent film called You, Me and everyone We Know. My tastes in Anime and Manga/Hentai run the same.
I used to only watch completed anime series and movies that I could find new or used at stores or on Amazon. I now watch anime series online through Crunchyroll. Funimation, Anime Ultima, and a couple of other sites.

Speaking of Subs vs Dubs, I have started watching a lot more series in Japanese with English subs and I am getting used to hearing and appreciating the Japanese language but, trying to read the subs while watching the animation causes me to miss critical action or I'm not always able to read the subs if they go by to fast. So I guess I will take the dubs if I have a choice.

About my rating system: I don't claim to be an anime expert. I don't know Japanese so I can't comment on the quality or accuracy of the subs or dubs. As long as the music doesn't hurt my ears I'm OK with it. I rate my anime on the enjoyment I get from it, the art style or look of it, the originality of it and if it can hold my attention. I have given so far over 50 10's which I must confess is probably too generous but they still reflect my appreciation of the stories. For the most part I will drop anything under a rating of 5 unless it is short or I bought the DVD in the bargain bin. Low ratings don't always mean I think the anime is bad, they may not fit my interests or are aimed at a younger audience. Everyone's taste in anime is different and I will never put down someone for liking an anime that I don't like.

My List of Enjoyable CRAPPY Anime:
These are B list anime that is so bad it's fun to watch. Starting with the lowest rated to ridiculous over the top gore and blood, Monsters that make you laugh, as well as bad dialogue and poor animation.

More to come.

My Favorite Mature Anime:
When I say Mature Anime, I am referring to creativity and/or complex ideas, disturbing concepts and just good writing.

My Favorite Cute, Funny, Magical, Heartwarming and/or Romantic Anime:

My Favorite unusual, offbeat, offensive and funny Anime:

Oh, when I talk about depressing, I don't think it was THAT depressing at all because there were times were you were cheering and going yeah! Take that asshole!!!

Rainbow has a great ending, I was satisfied, nothing depressing there. I think the first half was great, it was more of a dark mood theme kind of feeling, and the second half isn't as bad as you think, so to sum it up first half = good ending and second half = good ending. I thought one of events that happened was sad, but in the end it's how those characters manage to overcome this tragedy and made it seem that it wasn't so bad after all. I think as long as an anime does not any bad/sad endings, it should leave you with a good impression.

I've heard of Boogie Phantom, however my close friend didn't like that anime, so it prevented me from watching it. I think I'll look into it though and see how I feel about it.

Lol, I just watched Bible Black the other day. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of watching Hentai because obviously.. it's anime sex and it's too strange for my liking. I thought it was funny, at least it had a plot.

Hmm, if you're bored and want to watch superhero anime, I suggest you take a look at Tiger and Bunny. I forgot if I told you about it, but take a look at it if you're interested I guess! Well see ya later!

Oh, don't worry about that. I'm from the future. There is no present, there's only the immediate future and the recent past.

Sola is good! Yeah it's a bittersweet ending, but I thought it was fine the way it is. I felt sorry for Aono though, but she turned out to be a special one and very loyal too.

Yeah! My summer is going to be exciting. The last time I went to Vietnam was back in 2010. Time flies by doesn't it? At that time I was going out with my ex-girlfriend and while I was in Vietnam, I realized my feelings for my ex at the time was mixed feelings, but after that long vacation in Vietnam and coming back, we felt a great love connection again, but a couple months later and going ahead to the beginning of 2011, lets say March, things fell apart and I decided to break up. I guess since then I learned and moved on and she wasn't worth the trouble. Sorry for the rave there, but yeah lol.

I'm going with my family, this might be the last time I'll see my grandfather from both sides. They're getting up there in age and I don't know if I'll have a chance to go back anytime soon. I need to stay on top of things with school because I'm a bit behind. I suppose to graduate this year, but oh well. I'm still piling up on anime and other movies, while in Asia though. That 20 hour plane ride doesn't look promising, but anime and a couple of movies will DEFINITELY help lol, oh yeah forgot to mention my portable games too.

On the other hand, there's an anime that I want you to take a look at and I suggest you to watch it when you reach 499 completed anime and end that 500th mark with this one. It's called Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin The first half is great, I mean what makes this anime great is that it's inspiring. The character's journey are led to calamity, but they learn to overcome these obstacles through trust and confidence. Also, it's a thriller anime, practically one of my top thriller anime of all time. I'm still watching it though, I'm on episode 25/26. The first half you could say, it's the main story, and then the second half are divided into character arcs on how they put themselves out there in the real world. In the end, it's all about friendships, hardships, agony, pity, acceptance and sorrow. I highly recommend you to watch it though lol.

Haha, I don't blame you, but it seems like everything you've watched so far have been good or great. I can name a few series out there though that I wish was still on-going.

Oh yeah, for some reason I just believe the Boston Marathon was all a conspiracy. I have no idea who to believe anymore, but in the end I really don't care anymore. It sounds kind of cold-hearted in my part, but whats done is done.

Presentation was great and so was my court trial. I don't have to feel the pressure, the stress, and worries. It feels great to relax now, and I have one more final to go this week before I can finally say, hello summer vacation.

I have a lot of plans this summer though, starting up with movies, anime convention, New York City, California, then off to my country in Vietnam for a month starting in July, it might be the last time that I'm ever going to visit my grandfather because they're getting old and they look like they might be at the end of the road. It's going to be fun, I'm gonna reunite with friends everywhere, not only Vietnam, but in Cali and NYC as well.

Thanks! And I will definitely keep that in mind and will keep a sharp eye on my surroundings.

Now that I take a good look at it, I see that the creator is none other than Rumiko Takahashi. For this reason alone I shall watch it. And it does seem to have an interesting concept. Not as gore filled as was my first thought.

I shall give it a shot. Thanks for the recommendation! I cannot promise though that I will watch it right away. I have 9 shows that I have lined up in a very disorganised lineup.

And I am shall be away for a trip to the Big Apple for a week starting Friday.

By all means you should put it there if you think that it deserves the honour of such a title.

I personally really liked the show and the excessive macho feeling and corniness of it all.

Unusual is better, standing out, whether in a good way or a bad way, those shows will stand out far more in your memory than the mass of bland, unoriginal cliché ridden shows.

And I would have to agree with you, new titles just don't draw my attention or seem to have any appeal, there are exceptions though; like Kids of the Slopes! (which you seem to be putting off!) Maybe you just aren't interested.

And while it may surprise you, I have a higher tolerance for horror and gore than I might have had you think; my only problem with it is that I often find it to be unnecessary or excessive.

I just don't see the appeal to it. I will watch a show that contains horror, but not for the horror element.

YodasFunHouse | 04-24-13, 7:41 AM
That show sounds like it has it all! I think I may need to wait at least 349.34 years before I consider watching it, it seems like too much for me to handle.

What you found in Crying Freeman, that is what I found in Bastard!!, so macho that it's funny.

And Mermaid Forest definitely looks like something you would enjoy, but me being the person I am, I don't think I would enjoy it.

Horror just isn't my thing, then again, I thoroughly enjoyed Berserk and that had some horror elements.

YodasFunHouse | 04-23-13, 5:12 PM
I am well my friend, been busy, but I seem to be enjoying life in general at this moment in time.

How are you?

And I am glad to hear that you will give it a shot, hopefully you will enjoy it.

And that sounds like some painful fun! If you watch any good shows between them then that good show might just stand out more than it would otherwise.

Mobile Police Patlabor: Early Days. Short OVA series, 7 episodes.

End Results: Film created right after, a longer TV series and then more films and OVAs.

I can only comment on what I have seen, which is the OVA series and the first film but it has been the most enjoyable new show in recent memory (probably since September, not including Maison Ikkoku, which I started in May and finally finished in the New Year). I plan to watch the main series soon.

Not sure if it is your cup of tea, but you could try out the 7 episode OVA to see if you like it.

For a good review of the show, check out CrimsonGlaive's review of the main Patlabor series, it applies to the first OVA as well.

Haha, I don't think I could endure such pain on bad anime.

Yeah I figured! You like watching a lot OVA's and movies. It's okay though, whatever floats your boat. I've watched way too many TV series especially the ones above the 8 range. However, the reason why I watched those only is because I know there will a point of time where I probably won't be watching anime for a while. It's nice to watch every popular or considered worthy anime. When it's all said and done, I'll be happy with all the good anime I've watched once I look back at it.

It was devastating, the police shoot out at Watertown was about 30 to 40 minutes away from my home, which isn't too bad. When I heard the news, I heard they jacked an SUV and not only there was a shootout, there were grenades being thrown, which is a quite ridiculous. On that Friday morning, school was canceled. That exact day I suppose to get ready for a presentation, which I was ready for, but I guess I need to wait until this Friday, I'm a bit sad about that, but oh well. Besides that, a lot of people are bashing the suspect saying "he needs to die and whatnot" I think that's going a little bit overboard. Executing him publicly accomplishes nothing, so people need to realize that he got caught, we're safe and that's that. Whatever happens... will happen.

Pookykin | 04-21-13, 5:50 PM
Lol, I have no idea if you're trying to watch GOOD anime or bad anime @_@

Anyways, I realized you almost caught up to me on "anime completed", but our episodes watched are so far apart lol.
Spring semester is almost over for me, so I can't wait for that.

I'm going to be gone from MAL for the time being, I have too much stuff on my mind and this week was a rough week too considering what happened at the Boston Marathon, what a relief that it's over now.

Shiki definitely has its flaws but I found the way the show intertwines Eastern and Western folklore and religious beliefs quite unique and very well executed. It also has some of the best anime hair I’ve seen so far.

There is no question that Casshern is bleak. I felt completely gutted at the end of it but in a healthy way. I do watch a fair amount of shounen anime and the show proved to be quite a sobering experience, and a much-needed one in retrospect. But I completely understand what you’re saying. I had a similar reaction when I watched the first episode of Elfen Lied. I just couldn’t bring myself to continue regardless of how great I know it is. It literally made my skin crawl. It doesn’t mean I’ll never finish it but I have yet to figure out what kind of frame of mind I need to be in to stomach it. As for Phatom… Well, I really loved the premise and the universe but I just couldn’t connect with the characters (which seems to be a reoccurring issue I have with Urobuchi’s work).

Thanks for reminding me of Nichijou. I’m actually surprised it wasn’t already on my PtW list since I’ve heard nothing but great things about it.
And I’m curious now. Any particular reason(s) why you haven’t watched Sakachimi no Apollon?

grifatmal | 04-14-13, 9:11 PM
Hey Jym, thanks for the warm welcome and the recommendation. It does look like something I will enjoy. I mean let's be honest. I'll sit up straight with my ears perked up for anyone who gives Shiki a 9 (I loved that show). May I suggest that you do give Casshern Sins another chance one of these days? It is a dark story and there isn't much redemption to be found in this universe but that's what makes the hero's journey so poignant. And some of the fight sequences are truly breathtaking (Umakoshi is one heck of an animation director).
