Hey because you are from same place as me (you posted it on scottish forum :) ) I thought I would recommend you an anime to watch. I watched an anime that got recommended to me that sounded terrible, it turned out to be great. So I went out my way to watch animes that had high ratings but sounded like something I would hate and magically turned out to be the two best animes I have ever seen.
Hajime No Ippo - Its about boxing... i dont even like boxing how can it possibly be good? How wrong I was, it started off a tiny bit slow but it drew me in and turned out to be fantastic. (When I say started out slow I mean the first 10-15 minutes of ep 1) You should just try ep 1, it will prob be enough to get you hooked.
Hikaru No Go - Its about a board game... how can someone playing a board game be good... this is going to be dull I thought to myself, watched first min or two, omg I dont like look of this was my initial thoughts. To my surprise again it turned out to be fantastic, it is mind boogling how the Japanese can make such amazing stories.
You should try those I think you will be more than pleasently surprised :D Let me know how it goes :)
