I'm glad you enjoyed Giant Robo. Many people are immediately put off by the fact that the story is about a kid and his robot, which is why they never get to see the boy grow into a man.
I have to admit that if i didn't already have The Dude as my profile picture, I would have chosen Shockwave Alberto.
As for shows that are similar ... I'll have a look and see if I can suggest a few.

Gosh, I am terrible at answering messages in a timely manner through MAL D:
Depends what you're in the mood for.
*Heartwarming/Goofy - Mahoraba: Heartful days. I probably like the animation more than the show but it was a pretty cute show.
*Robot maid - Mahoromatic. Um. This is a tough one to explain. Its pretty good though. Also heartwarming at times.
*weird/goofy/entertaining - Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro. The manga is def. better but demon detectives man.
Let me know what you feel like watching and i'll try to go from there :o
