Ya I didn't have any cable till I was like 10...and it was mostly Cartoon Network and King of the Hill reruns. So my anime was mostly stuff we watched at school or movies my mom had :D
If you have watched the 1997 series, that's kinda the best berserk has to offer. Of course my opinion isn't that widely spread, but I honestly believe it. So yeah the 1998 version is absolutely worth watching and you should probably watch it before reading the manga because if you read the manga first you might get lazy and never end up watching it which would be a bit of a shame. However, the manga version of the golden age arc, is, probably better than the show. So when you read the manga make sure to read it right from the start because there are some differences. Mainly shortening some stuff by getting rid of stuff and censoring stuff. Manga is really solid till like idk? the point I'm at now, idk im kinda getting bored, but it was very entertaining up till like chapter 180 or something. Never quite got as good as golden age arc, but hey others will tell you otherwise.
-So yeah kinda just jumped into that conversation, but maybe that gives a little incite from someone who has watched/read. I'll be watching the 2016 coming out soon, because the parts it covers was good in the manga and I'm curious to see what happens. The manga has god-tier art, so it's almost worth just because of that tbh, and I'm not someone who just likes something because of art.
Pretty much the only other manga I have read (not true, but almost) is jojos, which I'm actually shocked it be saying this, but I just might like the manga even better than the anime. Idk, it's kinda crazy to think of that, because I love the anime as well, but idk the manga is pretty damn good. Read part 4 in a few days, and by this point I'm reading part 6. It's nice that they have coloured scans if your into that.
I'm pretty new to manga as a whole (obviously), but I'm getting into it man, there are some things that will never get a good anime, and you will forever miss out on it by not reading manga. Also nice that mangas that are quite old can have very nice art, and it has a nice feel. Lots of manga from the 90s and stuff have art styles that are great. Of course there are a plethora of shitty manga, but you know, I'm not really going to waste my time with those.
but don't watch berserk 2016 for the love of god.
