You are right to say that it's disrespectful to call a studio lazy. I was wrong in saying that, and I apologise for that. However, the lack of animation in Gokufushudou cannot be viewed as merely a creative decision. There must have been some issue which prevented it from being fully animated. Probably lack of funding. This reflects badly on the anime, despite it's other merits.

Voice acting, sound cues and music, as you said, are all crucial parts of an anime, and are as important as the animation. However, I believe that they are equally as important. In the same way which you cannot have an anime without voice acting, you cannot have an anime without animation. Had the anime been fully animated, but only had subtitles and no voice acting, you can believe me when I say that I still would have had complaints.

You mentioned Ghost Stories, and I tried to write an argument as to why you were wrong in comparing the situations, but honestly, you're not. Ghost Stories, despite everything against it, ended up with a very enjoyable English dub. However, at least it was animated. However, I do not believe that a proper anime should be able to be compared to a manga dub. Manga dubs still have value, and are oftentimes very enjoyable, but are different to anime. As a fan of the manga, one of the things I was excited to see in Gokushufudou was the animation. I was let down in this regard. I can still experience a lot of the story from jsut reading the manga. Despite everything that the adaptation has added, honestly, for me I would rather read the manga. That is partly why I believe it is a bad adaptation.

I agree that animation cannot make a story better. The story is already written. But animation can make an anime, at least to a certain degree better. I agree that it cannot make a good story incredible, but what it adds to an already incredible show should not be looked down on. That is why I am disappointed in Gokushufudou. Possibly I did look down on it too much because of my initial disappointment. I agree that the show is better than I thought at first, upon reflection. But it is still disappointing.

Edit: I just looked in to it and found that this was something the author requested. I guess it was a creative decision (can we pretend what I said about it not being a creative decision didn't happen?). The anime was apparently marketed as an animated comic in Japan, but that was not what was done in the West, leading to disappointed fans like myself. I don't really understand the decision, nor can I fully agree with it, but at the end of the day it's the author's decision, and my opinion doesn't really matter.

If I'd have known this beforehand it could have prevented a lot of misunderstandings, and I feel sorry for J.C. Staff for getting a load of criticisms from people like me who didn't know the truth. I still would argue that it is lacking as anime, but seeing as the author wanted it to be more an animated comic than an anime, I suppose that that is the point.

I just read your Gokushufudou review, and while I can't fully disagree, I would say this:

I couldn't possibly agree more that Gokufushudou has a good story, and handles the comedy very well, but I don't feel like that's the issue that people are bringing up. It's not because people value animation over story, but because animation is important as well as story. Good animation by itself cannot make a good anime, but that doesn't mean that it isn't important. The only word that can be used to describe Netflix's adaptation of Gokufushudou is lazy, in my opinion. The story was already written for them. All they had to do was animate it, but they chose not to do that. It almost feels the same as watching a manga dub on YouTube. At least that's my take on the matter, and I feel like that's why people are so annoyed.
