Armed with a degree in three majors from a major Midwest university, I seek to utilize a vast array of knowledge to guide me through the more intellectual aspects of watching anime. These aspects seem to be more about the industry as a whole lately rather than individual works, but they are important nonetheless. So think of me as an informed person who will try to talk about anything and hopefully not sound pretentious in doing so.
A Chronology of my long standing love affair with mediocre anime:
Well it all started in the fall of 1997, and it was the rather appalling mess that is Dragonball Z. It was the old censored Pioneer dub, but for as young as I was I guess it appealed. Thankfully, I realized the error of my ways eventually. Then there was my Gundam Wing phase, who knew stock footage could be so entertaining. I thought it was good at the time, and I still maintain that episode 24 is brilliant, but its mediocrity could only be shown to me from someone from the outside years after the fact.
Then I had a phase where I was watching Ranma 1/2, which came about because it was a really popular show on some file hosting service that has long since died, about 7 years ago if I remember right. Anyway I'm kind of still into that kind of show.
Eventually I got to college, and eventually found myself enjoying comedies and love dramas. Almost all were average at best, yet, I still keep watching.
The section about my unusual taste in music:
Seeing as this is MyAnimeList after all, most people are going to have a taste for JPop or various songs from different anime. I would be no exception to that. However, I have interest in other areas and a large amount of that came through the inspiration of a political science professor.
There was an early period where I liked pretty much what a standard person who I think would be on this site liked. That eventually changed over the course of the fall of 2004. It started with an offhand remark about the anniversary of Tupac Shakur's death. Then, there was the comparison between Supercar and Pizzicato Five. Having to listen for myself, I had to go against him. P5 are better, despite Supercar being great in their own right.
Over time, I realized the after-the-fact brilliance of NWA, the fun that can be had listening to Wir sind Helden, the sublime sounds of Air and Daft Punk.

EmperorJ said: The whole first episode of Hayate no Gotoku was something that had me hooked. Maybe it was the fact that the episode contained large amounts of social commentary that is so rare in anything.
Heh, well that certainly didn't continue much past the first episode.
If you want a comedy with social commentary try Oh! Edo Rocket.
I can understand not wanting to end up a prisoner. Though you'd have some great stories to take back home...when you were eventually released. :) South Africa sounds like it's well worth waiting for, though. I've always wanted to go to Africa. I'm going to Ecuador in May and I'm pretty pumped up about that!
Hello,
I wanted to ask how did you found out about Groovy Corner?
I mean, the official discussion thread is on AnimeNation Chain Gang club's forum, of which you're clearly not part of.
At any rate, I didn't know I have readers outside the club, it makes me kinda happy ^_^.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Cya.
