Part 2 is easily my most favorite so far followed closely by part 4. So here's hoping David Production continues.

Ah, that's true. Didn't think of it that way.

Thanks man! The hate is pretty expected as I am on the new rating scale, but I just wanted to write a review. That said, silly plebs not on the new rating scale :]

Thank you for your Samumenco review. You not only summed up my own thoughts on the show, but added new ones that make even more sense and further justify the 3 rating that I also gave it.

I honestly wonder if people are giving it a high score just because they couldn't predict what was going to happen next.

I think you are me – you should stop being me, it must be terrible. ;_;

I'm not sure what I'd give it on the /based/ "new rating swag scale," but I'll let you know after I watch the last episode. I'm leaning on the solid 5, but the last episode could impact it.

I can tell you my thoughts on it though in a mini Nagi no Asukara review:

Compared to Hanasaku Iroha and Tari Tari, Nagi no Asakura is actually a romance. PA Works may suck, but it looks like they can pull a romance genre pretty well (There was also True Tears). The setting is completely unrealistic, yet at the same time, the characters feel pretty realistic. Of course, the drama is unrealistic, but this is an anime, so you need a bit of exaggeration. I've stated before that I disliked the religious aspect of the show, but at this point in time, it's pulled itself into being a major role in the plot. Of course, I still find many of the religious aspects of the show completely nonsensical, adding nothing to the show except questions. Questions that just riddle the plot with holes, yet doesn't need answers as the questions asked have nothing to do with romance. It's frustrating from someone who likes and pays attention to small details, but overall, they don't matter if we're focusing on the bigger picture.

As for the romance itself, be prepared for one of the silliest relationship lines ever. A square? A pentagon? A hexagon? Unfortunately, things are just too complicated, and with seven, yes seven, main characters, it would be pretty much impossible to keep everything straight in your head. Yet somehow, I can keep all the relationships straight in my head. That's where the plot shines. It doesn't stray from the fact that these are the main characters. Yet while it's impressive that I've become attached to the characters to this point, there are still too many characters. While I can keep the relationships straight, it doesn't mean I fully understand all the characters. Romance characters have a lot of emotions flowing out of them, so when you cross seven complex characters with each other, things get really complicated and messy.

And speaking of complicated and messy, let's talk about the pacing. Before getting into details, Nagi no Asukara is divided into two major arcs. The second arc is a direct consequence to the events of the first arc, so as a result, they are connected to the point where you can't call them separate arcs anymore. But back to the topic at hand: pacing. The first arc is like watching a tortoise walk the distance of a marathon, while the second arc is like trying to track the movement of a laser. It's understandable that the second arc would be fast due to it being a direct consequence of the first arc, but that doesn't give any good reason why the first arc was so slow. You can kind of compare it to Steins;Gate's slow to fast pacing. But is the pacing worth it? Could Nagi no Asukara have been a 13 episode series? Definitely not as there are just too many characters and too much going on for you to cram it into 13 episodes. But does it deserve 26? I'm sure it would have been fine in 24 or even something like 20 (I'm looking at you, NiseKoi). But that being said, I honestly can't complain on the pacing when watching the latter episodes in the series. After being so indulged in the setting of Nagi no Asukara, the pacing really begins to feel natural.

So would I recommend Nagi no Asukara to you? It really depends. If you were a big romance/drama watcher, sure. It's a decent addition to the romance/drama genre, but it's a frustrating one if any. But if you aren't an avid romance enthusiast, it might be harder to recommend Nagi no Asukara to you. If someone were to ask me, "Do you think I should watch Nagi no Asukara?" I'd probably say something similar to what I said above along the lines of, "If you like romance and drama, you should watch it; I think you'd like it if you like those genres. Personally, I grew very frustrated and annoyed at all the characters as the show progressed, but you might have a different opinion about it." Of course, that's because I'm a nice guy. Being who I am, I could probably find away to recommend my least favorite anime to someone with clever working.

To sum up my thoughts in points, it'd look something like this:
+ Interesting characters that develop over time
+ An unique setting that positively emphasizes the show (mostly)
+ Character relationships that are well thought out and feel natural
+ Drama that is well executed for the most part
- An awkward pacing that makes you frustrated
- Religious themes and lore that detract from the romance
- A whole slew of unanswered questions
- Nonsensical explanations covered up by religion and tradition
- A high character count that creates a complicated mess of emotions

Ultimately, I still feel really mixed about the show. It did a lot of things right, but also a lot of things wrong. I'll tell you my conclusive feelings as soon as I watch the final episode, and I'll definitely keep you posted.
