I generally give my overall score based on a combination of the storyline, characters, and enjoyment. The art and sound play a part in the scoring as well, but they don't usually affect it that much. I don't give 10s very often, the show must mean a lot to me to achieve that.
10: A perfect show. A masterpiece. My heart probably broke while watching it.

9: Excellent. It's not quite "perfect", but there were few flaws and everything was mostly executed, well... excellently.

8: Great. Some flaws, but the story/characters are very enjoyable, and it is an overall great anime.

7. Good. Usually the enjoyment factor is higher than the quality factor for these, but there are many redeeming qualities, and of course, an amount of flaws. Just above average.

6. Okay. It's watchable, and enjoyable, but generally it's pretty average and nothing too out of the ordinary.

5. Just as bad as it is good. Really nothing special at all on offer. Less-than-average.
