Honestly I'm a big fan of the Hakuouki series as a whole, but out of all of the various OVA's, Movies, Series, etc. I believe this is my favorite little mini-series.

If you haven't watched Hakuouki & Hakuouki Hekketsuroku than it's important to watch them first in order to understand the more intricate details about the overall story.

I love this because it shows us the boys a bit more and how their relationship with Chizuru is, and why she's important to them (the game that the anime is based on is an otome one, afterall!) and it also gives us more light-hearteded enjoyment as well, ... since the main series is a bit heavy.

Plus, we get to see how these characters are not flat copies of one another, or just trope-y otome love interests, they are interesting, well rounded individuals that all have their own flaws and strengths. I think it's a very good addition to the collection of already great works for this series.

I didn't intend for this to be my first review, but there you go.

The story is based on an Otome Game, Diabolik Lovers ~Haunted Dark Bridal~ and since has four additions to the series ( MORE,BLOOD | VANDEAD CARNIVAL | DARK FATE | LUNATIC PARADE )

Unfortunately, to fully understand exactly what is going on in the anime - you kind of need to get some backstory from the series of games ( or read the Wiki - as I did ). The Otome game itself is very different from the norm, as it takes a much more dark & sadistic twist to it, and believe ... me when I say that the anime pales in comparison to the goings on within the visual novel itself.

The series I believe suffers quite a lot from only having 15min per episode, as there is not enough time to not only develop the story they are trying to tell, but also not enough time to even give all of the characters a chance to grow and show all sides of them beyond flat, unchanging fiends.

I'd recommend it as a series to watch if you're already familiar with the game, or enjoy a far darker twist to the usual romance anime's, however if you're looking for a sweet reverse-harem style anime - this one is probably not the one for you.
