About Chobi
Hi there ^_^

About me, let's see... well, for starters I love anime :P Ghibli films and GITS are firm favourites, but Shinkai's films are head and shoulders above everything else in my opinion. I read some manga as well, but since I'm a very fast reader, I finish them really quickly. I don't have many as £6 is quite steep for half an hour's entertainment in my opinion =/

As well as that, I'm into video games, SF films and books. Without sounding elitist, I prefer things that are involving and make you think. Isaac Asimov's and Philip K. Dick's novels are amongst my favourites.

I also really like music. I play the piano, and my favourite composer is probably Debussy.

Well, I haven't changed that since about 2009, so if anyone cares: I'm now at uni, and I'm not currently modifying the list style (it still looks awful though). Maybe I'll have another hack at it once I've learned some CSS. The unspoilered text is still pretty accurate though.

Long time no speak.

I'm not sure how often you check your emails or MSN these days, but it would be nice to catch up. I'm gonna be spending the summer in Newcastle too, if you fancy meeting up with me after all this time.

I have a tenuous connection to the internet at the moment but I do have MSN on my phone. If you want to reach me, your best bet is either there or on my MAL profile.

See you around!

Sorry I missed you on MSN, I'm on now if you want though.

Hey there Chobi, I recently watched 'Whisper of the Heart' and it was very good, much like any other Ghibli release. Though, I noticed that you have it down as your absolute favourite. I'm curious, what is it that makes it special for you?

I thought the only bad thing about it was the dialogue at the end was a bit... messy. It seemed a bit iffy to me, having him basically ask her to marry him when they haven't really been together all that long.

I watched the English dub, so I'm not sure if the Japanese version has quite the same problem. I suppose it also gives the film a more solid conclusion. Hmm, well what are your thoughts on it, anyway?

Hmm, I see what you're saying about numerical distillations. I suppose a better question would have been, why didn't you give Gurren Lagann a 10/10?

Normally I would say one would have to give reasons why something deserves a perfect score, rather than defend giving it a less than perfect score. But in the case of TTGL, I get the feeling it is an exceptional piece of work, albeit flawed. Perhaps I'm being slightly presumptious, but I think it'd be much easier to explain why you didn't give it the score.

I wasn't sure whether or not to give it a 10, but I decided to go with the score because I seldom see an anime which makes me feel the way I did after watching TTGL, and it did a lot of brave things, such as killing off a main character at a very early stage.

The main problem with the series, for me at least, was that it seemed to have an identity crisis. For the first 10 or so episodes, I was under the impression Gurren Lagann was a comedy... it so heavily parodies mecha anime.

Then all of a sudden, it becomes very, very serious. Not just after that character dies, but the whole second arc of the story. All of a sudden it goes completely the opposite direction. That is, until the final 5 or so episodes. Where we have still got the very serious side of the anime, but combine it with the ridiculous transformation sequences reminiscent of the earlier comedy episodes.

The result, I found myself feeling sad, almost in tears because characters are dying, lovers are being forced apart and everything looks hopeless... and then I can't help but burst out laughing with the promise that "This Drill is the Drill that will pierce the HEAVENS!"

Even with these criticisms though, I can't help but feel TTGL is a something truly special.

So, I just finished Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann... certainly quite an interesting show... I was curious why you gave it a 9; I gave it a 10 myself because I went through so many different emotions watching it and it really struck me as something special.

On the other hand, it's also kinda schizophrenic... I found myself almost in tears at parts, and then I would just burst out laughing because of an OTT transformation sequence.

Magical powers?

I'm worried now. I was really looking forward to it... regardless, I'll still check it out myself.

Since I posted that comment I've actually seen the first episode of K-ON!! and I agree that it hasn't improved, at least so far. But I'm a fan of the series so I don't really care.

The new music I didn't like at first, but it's growing on me.

I suppose Heroman is probably the next release to catch my attention. I'm not really a big fan of superhero comics/graphic novels, but I'll have a look at it eventually. What did you think of it?

AnnoKano | 04-10-10, 3:22 PM
Hmm, so I haven't seen/heard from you in a while... What's up?

Had a look at any of the new anime season? I have heard good things about Senko no Night Raid or whatever it's called...

Unfortunately I can't say the same for K-ON!!... mixed reviews, even from fans of the series.

AnnoKano | 02-27-10, 4:28 AM
Gunslinger Girl is out of print? I didn't know that- I was going to order it soon, but I really ought to buy the new Lucky Star DVD and the Haruhi boxset... and then all the difficulties around Azumanga Daioh...

I could wait to buy Lucky Star, but I have watched the series so many times and had so much enjoyment out of it I feel guilty for not having supported it at all.

So much anime, so little time and money.

I also want the Too Heart Boxset, Hidamari Sketch boxset and a few other titles here and there.

AnnoKano | 02-23-10, 4:22 PM
When I asked if it was similar to Grave of The Fireflies, I was refering to your comment that "enjoy" isn't really the right word.

Grave of the Fireflies is not an enjoyable film, at all. In fact, it's one of the most depressing films I have ever seen in my entire life. But it's a great film. A masterpeice.

I didn't mean to equate the two on themes or anything like that.

And yes, the label "girls with guns" definitely has a certain stigma. It just makes me think of shows with zero plot, girls with big breasts and huge machineguns, one for each hand.

Of course, some of these animes actually look quite good. Gunslinger Girl looks really interesting and She, The Ultimate weapon has its fair share of good reviews. What's more, there plot is no more ridiculous than most of the anime out there.

AnnoKano | 02-19-10, 2:39 PM
Ah, I'm never on MSN anyway. If you have xfire, my username is mwmsleepyhead.

No worries about the late reply, I noticed you weren't on the Neo forums quite as much as usual.

So from your description it sounds like the manga is similar to Grave of the Fireflies... Would that be accurate?

Although, it seemed to me to be market as 'Girls + Guns = $' rather than an emotional story about the horror of war.

The thing about Saikano too, we had to watch it in English because the Subtitles weren't working and we could only watch the first few episodes. You aren't the only person to have scored it highly either, and it's MAL score is around 8, I think.

Of course, that doesn't mean much... but I haven't seen many people complain about it.

Despite my reservations about the first couple of episodes I will most likely pick it up, because it is available dirt cheap on Region 2.

AnnoKano | 02-11-10, 3:47 PM
Hey there Chobi, just had a little look at your list and you gave Saikano, or She, The Ultimate Weapon 8 out of 10. I've only seen the first four episodes or so (since it was in Anime Society) and we all thought it was pretty bad.

So, does it get better towards the end, or is it probably just not my thing? I'm going to watch it all eventually, but from what I have seen of it I was curious why you gave it such a high score.

It was the scene where she shot a missile out of her arse, wasn't it? :D
