To be frank, I do not understand how this anime could have gotten such a high review on MAL. There was basically ZERO character development in the entirety of the 12 episodes I watched. The story centers around a 15-year-old girl that has severe communication impairment and relies on writing in her notebook to communicate with everyone around her. It's not that she is mute. She just refuses to talk because of "anxiety" so she can never seem to utter a whole sentence out of her mouth, even to her own FAMILY for the entire 12 episodes. I was initially understanding and patient for like
...
the first 3 episodes, but to see that she basically never even attempts to grow out of her character made the show a truly slow and dreadful watch. Every single time someone attempts to converse with her, she reacts like a deer in headlights, never knowing how to respond. Does she ever get better by the end of the show? No. I would much rather hear a quiet character like Hinata from Naruto. Hinata is shy AF but at least she manages to speak full sentences and not just utter sounds out of her mouth.
Also, she has a goal of making 100 friends, yet never even attempts to do so herself. She's always relying on the main male protagonist, Tadano, or the gender-fluid Najimi. Honestly, Komi's character is truly disgustingly unhealthy. The worse part is that this show is going to be having a second season! I am definitely not going to be tuning it. Absolutely awful to watch Komi never change.

This anime started off really well. The premise pulled me in right away. For a solid 5 episodes, I was hooked and couldn't wait to see the story unfold more. Unfortunately, the character development in the show is extremely slow if there were any development at all. For the next many episodes until the season finale, the audience was fed repetitive character misunderstandings and already used jokes seen earlier in the show. The ending of the show also left me with more questions than answers. I hope to see these questions answered in the second season and I definitely hope that Miko can communicate with
...
Yulia more effectively on their powers. Would like to see them work together with their spiritual powers. The lack of communication was funny at first, but to have it prolonged all the way until the end of the season unresolved left me quite unsatisfied.
Otherwise, this show has a lot of good points to it too. The art is beautiful, the story is unique, and the suspense scenes are built up well. Although season 1 left me with a lot of questions, it did set up for a possible season 2, which I would be totally back for.

This anime would be good if you're like under 10 years old. Art is average compared to other shows out there, same with soundtrack. Nothing overly amazing. I was quite bored by the repetitiveness of the show.
TLDR;
Save yourself the time and skip this anime unless you want to watch it with your 5 year old. You aren't missing much.
<SPOILER WARNING>
Every episode aside from the first one, follows the same format. Every single episode involves our group of protagonists in a different fantasy story universe (Cinderella, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, you name it). In every single one, the episode starts with the telling
...
of that short story. Then the episode pans back to the protagonists where they need to look for the Chaos Teller, who is literally causing chaos in that world as their name suggests. In every single episode, they immediately encounter the character somehow connected to the important story events of that universe (i.e. meeting Snow White right away or something). After spending like 15 minutes searching and identifying the Chaos Teller alongside that character they encountered, they all then spend like the next 5 minutes towards the end of the episode fighting the Chaos Teller and then of course, our main protagonists win the battle and everything is "solved" in that world. They then cast a spell and everything goes back to the way the story is supposed to go in that world and they move on to another universe that needs help. There is never a struggle where they have to continue into the next episode to continue the battle with the Chaos Teller. They literally always win. This repeats itself for the entire 12 episode season. The fight sequences are also very boring. Basically, the animators who worked on this show don't know how to draw fight scenes. Thank god this is not a longer show.

This is by far the most overhyped anime I have ever watched, and I have watched over 450 different animes so far. I have never before in my life felt so pissed off about an anime that I would drop it 16 episodes into a 24 episode season. I kept holding my breath hoping it would get better and for me, this anime just never got better. I have suffocated holding my breath for this long.
Everyone reading this review right now probably already has a gist of the plot - some 26 year old male protag goes back 12 years in time to basically
...
change his future. Well, between the time the main protagonist was 12 years old to present day 26 year old, he has not changed 1 iota - developmentally, mentally, emotionally, physically, etc. The dude retains the same character stats including IQ that he had back when he was 10. Think of the dumbest character you probably know (like Naruto or something) and this Takemichi character is 10 times even dumber than that.
Common sense escapes this dude like no other main character I have ever seen before and it is absolutely frustrating for me. Perhaps, I am not the target audience for this show since I am a 26 year old working adult. Maybe kids under 12 would enjoy it more considering the setting of the anime. But that's the thing. You got a good anime if you can capture a wider demographic, like say My Hero Academic. Target audience is for young teens/young adults, yet there are people well into their 30s, 40s who find themselves enjoying the show regardless.
< SPOILERS WARNING >
Okay, so we start off the beginning of the show with Takemichi experiencing a life/death situation and somehow magically is able to transport himself 12 years back in time. But only 12 years for some unknown reason and can only be triggered with a handshake with Naoto. Never further explained nor explored, kinda like Erased's time travel. Not a problem, I can take that plot point at face value. So we have some similarities, except the main character in Erased actually used his brain and strategized to fix his future. Here, we have a wild Takemichi that keeps impulsively throwing himself into dangerous situations (considering he is dealing with delinquents/gang members) and his adult self is already aware of what these types of people are - violent and dangerous. He even left town after middle school because he wanted to escape that life. Yet here he is, a No-Plan-Man superhero just jumping back into these gang disputes barely able to even string together a coherent sentence and explain things to other people around him like the adult he actually is, but somehow, expects himself to be able to change the future and be the hero of the day. He has done absolutely nothing to really prove himself in any way shape or form yet somehow expects himself to be some type of hero? What delusion of grandeur are you on man? Just makes me want to punch him in the face like all the other characters. At some point, I enjoyed seeing him get beat up because he is such an irritating character. Amazing how he just never learns and can never just put 2 and 2 together. He can somehow never dodge nor fight back at all. All he does is blackout and drop the floor with other characters waiting for him to wake up.
Also, throughout the entire 2/3 of the first season, it was repeatedly mentioned by Naoto and other characters over and over. Kisaki Tessa is a dangerous dude. OVER AND OVER he has had so many chances to MEMORIZE his name AND face AND try to learn more about this dude, but it just never crosses his mind at all. He just doesn't ever think about anything at all. It also never even crosses Naoto's brain to strategize more with Takemichi and provide him with more information. He's one stupid cop.
And then when Draken was bleeding out, Takebitchy just sits there and cries. Dude, call the ambulance! That is the first thing you do! And you know Draken was gonna die that night, so why don't you keep a better watch on him! This dude is seriously so clueless! And even better, he had to wait on the 2 girls to have the brilliant idea of calling the ambulance and the cops for him. That literally shoulda been your first thought. If you knew a gang battle was going to happen at that location at that time, then maybe go call the cops right away so that the fighting never gets the chance to escalate!
Another thing, we all get introduced to the characters but we don't really get to know their backstory except for Mikey and Draken. Everyone else remains basically a mystery. Considering how much Takebitchy is such a loser, I don't understand Hina's obsession with him. She was literally a character that was written just to exist and give the male main protag a love interest. But aside from that, she serves zero purpose. We also already know that Takebitchy left that lifestyle once, so why tf does he go back in time just to rejoin it and become even more involved in it? For the sake of saving her? That makes zero sense.
There's more to my complaining, but honestly, just a poorly written story with terrible character development. Other critical reviews probably have addressed the same if not similar points and more. This show is enjoyable for those who are sheep, aka incapable of critical thought, and likes to just take in everything without question. I can't believe how highly rated this anime is in MAL.

Overall, the 2001 version is still a lot better than the 2021 version. Aside from the updated visuals, the soundtrack is lackluster, the action sequence is underwhelming, and the storytelling is bland. Had this anime been rebooted and remade through Studio Bones, it would have been better executed. Had high expectations coming in but was left with great disappointment at the end of the season.
I'm glad this reboot is staying faithful to the manga, but there's definitely something about the execution that made me wanting more. It was just not a satisfying reboot for me so far. The main redeeming quality of this 2021
...
adaptation is that the artwork looks good.

I can't believe this was an anime I used to enjoy back when I was a kid. I don't even understand why this anime is rated 7 on MAL. It should be 5 or 6 max.
Story:
The anime was terribly directed. The constant fillers were distracting and were inserted randomly in the middle of important story arcs. Whoever directed this anime needs to be fired. The fight scenes were terribly drawn out with unnecessary dramatic dialogue. There were also so many unnecessary recap episodes. This anime didn't even need that many recap episodes because the first 4-7 minutes of every single freaking episode they have
...
is pretty much a recap of either the last episode or that entire arc. You can literally go run a mile outside and come back and be just in time for the main part of the episode. This anime took 366 episodes to get to the point when it could have done it in half the number of episodes. Actually, Bleach never got to the end because they decided to cancel it because it wasn't doing well. Gee, I wonder why. When you destroy your own anime by inserting a bunch of poorly executed fillers, you're bound to turn away viewers.
The comedy was also poorly timed. The jokes in themselves are trite. At first, they were bearable, but after 100 episodes of the same thing, it gets tiresome. The anime just tries way too hard to lighten up all the serious scenes by injecting unnecessary gags and comic relief. Well, needless to say, it didn't work. Rather, I think it had the opposite effect. I felt irritated if anything.
Characters:
The characters were all irritating too. They always talk too much during the battles. They don't strategize very well. Even the smart characters are terrible at critical thinking. Character development focuses mainly on Ichigo, while everyone is pretty much an extra. The female characters' development were especially horrible. For the entire 300 something show, Rukia and Orihime never grow stronger. They remained useless compared to Ichigo. I get that this show is a shounen, but is it necessary to diminish the female characters' capabilities in order for the main male protagonist to be strong? Can they not grow together emotionally, mentally, and physically? Can men only be strong when women are weak? Would strong female characters make the male characters weak? Completely irritating to see how useless the female characters turned out.
Furthermore, Ichigo as a character became way too OP. His weaknesses only show up when he's insecure. Most of the time, he's just a reckless, arrogant dumbass who somehow thinks he can take care of everything. The internal dialogue of the characters did nothing to make them three dimensional. It was really just poor writing and execution.
Art:
The art was okay. Nothing special. There are anime out there that rival Bleach's art, and there are plenty anime out there that are way better drawn than Bleach.
Enjoyment:
My enjoyment of the anime was negatively impacted by the poorly executed story and poorly written character development. Rather than something relaxing to watch during my break, I ended up feeling immense frustration at the characters and the story's direction.
Overall:
Don't waste your time watching this anime. If anything, I would only watch the first 50 episodes or so of the Rukia arc, and take my leave. (But skip the fillers!!!) Otherwise you're just wasting your time. Just go watch another anime.

First review. Brief review because I don't want to waste too much of my time in writing this. Reviewing only because this anime was so bad that it stuck out to me. .
The only reason why I toughed it out and finished this entire anime was because of its opening song. Other than that, the overall anime was lackluster.
Watching the first episode led me to believe that this anime had a lot of potential. There were a lot of interesting ideas that could have been explored and further developed. However, as I watched on, I realized that this anime carried a lot of elements that
...
are strikingly similar to other animes. Firstly, the concept of this anime very closely resembled Fullmetal Alchemist. It resembled it so closely that it might as well have been a rip-off. Secondly, the three main characters' super powers very much reminded me of the starter Pokemon powers (fire, water, grass). Like really? They couldn't have wielded any other type of super power? And even if they didn't, couldn't the characters have utilized their powers more? Why did they even train to develop their super powers if they didn't even do anything with it in the end? It felt like a pointless waste of time.
Tl;dr - The director of this anime did a poor job in developing its concept. The story felt rushed. The characters didn't have any development. The dialogue was unsophisticated, even though the concept behind the Divine Gate was supposed to have a philosophical edge. Just watch FMA instead of this rip-off of an anime.
