I've been watching since I was 4 years old, had no idea it was from Japan. Learned about Japan in history class and they pleased me a lot with their bushido way and loyalty to their country so since I researched more about those weird yet interesting fellows, I found anime and continue watching it for 10 years since then. How about u?
The chick was from Kurohime, and my advice is to skip like 7 or 8 first chapters since they are kinda boring and prepared lots of tissues too for a certain scene.... Hope that helps ;)
