To be precise, anything that has to do with "hooked" is psychological by default. Hooked = psychological.
That is why they say enlightment is when you are not attached to anything. Being hooked to something you don't like is stupid.
And if you ask me why I bother watching anime I don't like, it is because I like writing reviews. Reviewing opens your mind to wider horizons.

Well it did lose some of its fans. But even most of those who don't like it anymore still buy or watch it because they are now hooked to it and just want to see how it will end. Because it is very easy to get hooked into something without really liking it. Sounds stupid but it is true.
Think of smoking for example. Most smokers will admit it is bad for them but few really try to stop it. Some claim it is addictive and others that it keeps them company or helps to calm down during stressed moments.

There were no other well made shonen at that time if you look around. Even One Piece had poor acceptance for its simple beginning and bad dubbing. So it came in a time when kids wanted a shonen and there was not much antagonism. Plus, the advertisement was done to an almost overkill amount.

Oh that is very simple. If a show or movie appears at the proper time, it will sell a hundred times more while being the exact same thing.
For example, take the Brokeback Mountain movie. It has cowboys in it and had some good acceptance for a 2005 movie. Would it sell the same if it aired in the 60? No way, it would burn to the stake.
Think of Osamu Tezuka's works. They have stories that were made in the 60's yet are more serious and mature than most of the current anime. How many people know of Budha or Hi no Tori? Think of Galactic Heroes. How many people knew that anime up until 5 years ago? It was an OVA series and when it first aired there was no internet of publicity.

Please don't place success in sales as proof of being good. It just came up at the proper moment. If Dragonball had aired today for the first time, it wouldn't be as successful. Other less famous or wiith less sales shows like Full Metal Alchemist are quality wise a lot better.

No, I also disagree here. You seem to mistake premise with development. A full charater set should include 5 things
Likable appearance
Likable behaviour
Likable backdrop story
Development
Catharsis
Kishi managed to get the first three but messed in the last two. Almost no secondary characters developed over a huge period of time and all the catharsis we see is being constantly ressurected like they respawn as if it's some MMORPG

Too bad Naruto didn't remain as pure fun as Avatar. Kishi wanted to throw in as many characters and side stories as possible and now has no idea what to do with them.
