About BakaGekai
General Surgeon and Cancer Scientist by day; otaku by night ...

Welcome to my profile! Been watching anime for over 25 years and despite being a member of MAL since 2007, have only really started to update what I've watched in the past year ...

I hope to do a complete update of everything I've watched when I can remember what they were ...

I am a British doctor specialising in Colorectal and General Surgery and also work as a cancer research scientist at the University of Oxford. Making time for anime/manga is ridiculously difficult but the immense enjoyment I get from it ensures that I definitely make it one of my priorities. I have also been studying Japanese ever since I spent 3 months at Tokyo University Hospital in 2004 and can get by watching raws but I am not fluent enough to be able to read manga (damn that bloody kanji!). Japanese culture and history is glorious and unlike in the US and Australia, it is not something that has particularly filtered through to the UK due to the relatively small Japanese community here. My wife can't understand my obsession (especially since I no longer watch western media) but I hope to use Usagi Drop and Nodame Cantabile to convince her one day ...

I do not pretend to be a critic and I enjoy any anime that can distract me from reality. That said, it is clear which ones are superior hence I put my faith in statistics and strongly believe in the MAL average score for anime. It is no accident that Steins;Gate and LotGH score >9. I score a series using the MAL categories (7 - good, 8 - very good, 9 - great, 10 - masterpiece). What qualifies as a Masterpiece is, I'm sure, of great debate between fellow anime viewers but in my case, it's usually one that has left a profound after effect on completion, be it humour, romance, psychological or horror. If at any point a drama/romance makes me cry or a sci fi/mystery makes me gasp or a horror makes me cover my eyes etc. i.e. if an anime achieves its goal from its genre - I will usually score it 7+. I am very simple ...

My present Top 26 anime - subject to change whenever something comes along that piques my interest for more than a few minutes ...

In no particular order:

a) Steins;Gate
b) Cowboy Bebop
c) School Rumble
d) BakaTest
e) Nodame Cantabile
f) Death Note
g) Laputa
h) Welcome to the NHK!
i) Bakuman
j) Gosick
k) Kaichou wa Maid-sama
l) Toradora!
m) Kare Kano
n) Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
o) Lucky Star
p) Bakemonogatari/Nisemonogatari
q) FMP!
r) Mirai Nikki
s) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
t) Usagi Drop
u) Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
v) Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei
x) Kara no Kyoukai

Teddy Hall looks magnificent; the Great Hall looks particularly impressive! I am also a member of CUAMS (Cambridge University Anime and Manga Society), which is very active during term time, though unfortunately, lacking exposure and funding.

I noticed our lists are compatible in terms of sci-fi and horror! I have a penchant for dystopian literature and narratives that oscillate between the real and illusory (Satoshi Kon's or Gen Urobuchi's works are amongst my favourites in this vein).

I am so pleased you asked about Chihayafuru; it is a rare series in that I unexpectedly became emotionally invested in the fates and fares of all characters across both seasons. I have reservations in terms of genre here, since, as the protagonist of the series eloquently notes, Karuta is neither a competitive sport or a scholarly pursuit, it is an art.

The level of suspense is incredible, the balance between character development, comedy, whimsy, and action is immaculate. This is a series that succeeds in its every endeavour- to move, engage, and inspire its audience. After marathoning the first season within a week, I ordered a copy of the Hyakunin Isshu anthology. Each episode is named after the first verse of one of the 100 tanka and in each case, the symbolism and historical background of the poet is central to the episode in question.

I would also highly recommend watching Utakoi (a historical anime on the lives of some of the most prolific poets included in the anthology, and what inspired their poetry). It's a brilliant companion to Chihayafuru and completely transforms the experience of watching each episode.

Apologies for the rather lengthy response- I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Chihaya and hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

You should watch Serial Experiments Lain, it's very thought provoking and I think you'll enjoy it.

You are too kind! I realise I was too hasty in drawing a comparison but I'll look forward to the next Nazo no Kanojo volume and will revisit my comments after watching the very last episode. I was pleasantly surprised with this series; I think the idiom 'don't judge a book' becomes increasingly pertinent with every new season :-) I have learned to never judge a series by its promotional poster and/or synopsis (Madoka and Shinsekai Yori taught me this much!).

Looking forward to continuing our discussion! It's wonderful to meet a fellow Otaku in academia. I love visiting Oxford- Harris Manchester is our sister college and we have enjoyed quite a few exchange formals! I will also treasure my summer residential teaching post at Wadham (I had a wonderful class of summer school pupils from Hong Kong :)

With all the very best wishes (Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu!)

Oops! I probably should have posted my reply here- I wrote some initial thoughts under the 'comments' section of your profile. Thank you for pointing out the discrepancy in my recommendation; I'll review it now :-) Oh! and lovely to meet you

Orihime89 | 06-13-13, 6:52 PM
Thank you for bringing this up! Admittedly I have yet to finish Nazo no Kanojo and probably should have refrained from drawing parallels between the two! I've now realised how different the genres are and will be sure to edit my recommendation! I feel both shows are intense, atmospheric, and offer the viewer a wonderfully disconcerting pleasure. When watching both shows I often felt distanced from the characters, a voyeur or intruder on their privacy (though I guess this can be said of numerous series in the supernatural/horror genre). Comparisons can be definitely drawn in terms of the bonding rituals that drive both budding relationships. The co-dependency between author/instead in Crime Edge is reflected in Tsubaki's 'love-sickness' and the 'withdrawal symptoms' he experiences when distanced from Urabe. The animation styles couldn't be more different, but what I love about both shows is how the general aesthetic becomes a character in itself, the colouring contributes and augments the alienating effect and 'strangeness' of the plot.

Those are the first thoughts that come to mind, you were right to indicate my initial comparison was inaccurate though- many thanks! May I also say, I thoroughly enjoyed perusing your profile :-)

From the first episode, you just know there's something special about Mushishi. Im not going to spoiler anything but it's definitely one thats very original and creative. I think you'll love the concept. I can see why its ranked so highly.

Hahahahaha yes! such a Watanabe ending lol After Mushishi, I'm definitely watching Higurash and Mirai Nikkii as you've highly recommended me to :p

SamuraiBlue19 | 06-10-13, 7:45 PM
Thanks! I thought it might be a bit of a stretch myself, but I couldn't help but to be reminded of Hyouka while watching RDG. Besides the characters being similar, I think that RDG's hard-to-comprehendness allowed it to double as a mystery anime for me as well lol. Wish it was a bit longer.
(On a bit of an unrelated note) You have a great sense of humor!! The scenes from Danshi Koukousei and Kokoro Connect are two of my favorites!

Toucanbird | 06-10-13, 4:43 AM
Well, it was an enjoyable series...but the flaws with it were so obvious that it detracted from the experience for me. This series needed to be 24-26 episodes in the worst way because it introduced way too many sub-plots in way too little amount of time. I didn't feel the series hit hard enough on Miyuki and Izumiko's relationship as well as the main plot elements revolving around Izumiko's power. It had some really good things going for it...I just felt like the series introduced them too abruptly and it destroyed the flow of the series for me. I feel like it's a series I'll have to watch again and marathon because watching an episode on a weekly basis was difficult to do since the series didn't have a strong flowing narrative.

Like I said, I wouldn't call RDG bad per se, it's just rushed and choppy.

Kineta | 06-09-13, 6:36 AM
Thanks :) I tried to make it easier to understand and hope it helps.

Enjoy.

Rahdip | 06-08-13, 4:29 PM
Yes!!! :D

I highly recommend you to go into watching it without reading into it, just simply watch the movie and the rest is history.

I'm not usually the one to be easily teary to a movie either, so you know it's gonna be emotionally draining hahaha

Let me know your thoughts on it afterwards :p
