I was so pissed at first and ready to drop the manga, but I'm more or less indifferent now and sticking through to the end. I agree Zero deserves better, though. The thing is, they're both aware that she loves Zero more. Kaname says he left because she wasn't able to smile from the bottom of her heart with him, and Yuuki's answer is to tell him that instead of killing purebloods he should have erased her memories of Zero. When she erased Zero's memories of her, his thirst for her was also gone, thus easing his suffering. So the frustrating thing about the scene (other than the sex itself) is that both Kaname and Yuuki KNOW Zero is the one she loves.
I realized though that we never really got true development from Yuuki. It's just that, she's a completely different person with Zero and with Kaname, so with Zero she was able to return to her old self but away from him she reverts to how she was in 49. That's basically what this chapter was, a repeat of 49. She blames herself for everything Kaname has done, even asks if it's all her fault and as usual he doesn't deny it and lets her think that way. She's got a severe guilt complex and it's something she's never overcome.
But at this point, people are losing patience, so Hino's really putting her series at risk. I think what bothered me more than anything, more than even the pitiful sex scene, was the fact that Kaname's actions are suddenly forgiven now. Sure, Aidou-dono's death was one of his major crimes, but he STILL KILLED all those purebloods. And now he's abandoned it? If the reason really was because he intends to turn Yuuki human, and he didn't want to risk her being turned back, why is it that he intends to create the new furnace "tomorrow" (manga-time) and has left the purebloods alive? There's something really screwy going on. Or Hino has just decided to turn this into a Yume fanfiction, considering their craziest dreams and theories all happened in a single chapter. There's a minimum of 4 left anyway since this was the first chapter of the volume.

I think so too; it's what infatuation is. You're in love with the idea of someone, the fantasy of them that you've created, but once you realize they're someone different those feelings either go away (proving it was just infatuation) or grow deeper (turning into something more like love.)
It's like when you have a crush; those feelings feel strong, you may think you're in love, but you can't truly say you love that person until you actually know who they are. Not unless you love based off looks I guess lol.

I know exactly how you feel. I used to hate the scenes with Kaname in early arc 2 for exactly that reason, and when I was just a casual reader of the manga, I honestly had no confidence in Zeki at all, even though looking at it now it seems painfully obvious. But I joined Zekirum and started discussing the manga there with some of the girls, and my confidence in the pairing was restored :P Now the Kaname scenes don't even bother me, because honestly, they are so negative - more so in the officials, there's some slanted translations in the online version that make it seem more positive than it actually is.
I'm glad I can give you hope for the pairing :P I think at this point it's pretty much set in stone. I mean, Yuuki has been around Kaname plenty in the past few chapters, and her mind has only revolved around stopping him and her relationship with Zero. Which, if she just wanted them to be friends again, was fixed ages ago.
As for her feelings for Kaname, in the first arc whenever she talked about him it was about how he was a kind and gentle vampire, how he kept Zero's secret because he's "just that kind of person," etc. And by the end of the first arc, that image of him was shattered. During their picnic, she said that he'd become mean and he told her he was always that way, she just never thought so before. When he hugged her and tried to keep her from going after Rido, she said that the arms around her felt like those of a stranger, and the resin rose he got her cracked. She found out he killed Shizuka, used the bond between her and Zero, and also killed the council. All the reasons she had admired him and believed she loved him before were illusions, and all that she was left with was guilt because she thought everything he'd done and everything he'd sacrificed was for her. I mean, when he tells her they're engaged, he pulls the pity card out and says "Unless... Yuuki is going to leave me alone again." He later does the same thing, saying it's okay if she hates him, and later says it's okay if he can never touch her, so long as she is with him. He played her and took advantage of her kind heart to keep her by his side. Andd that's why I believe she referred to throwing her long hair away as "throwing away the burden/weights," because thats how she viewed their relationship. She was done playing a role for him, just like he's done playing a role for her.
And exactly, Zero is the Vampire Knight. And the present-time story revolves around him more than Yuuki, honestly.

Oh there's been some, but not near as much as Zeki. It's always a brief mention whereas Zeki stuff gets drawn out. I think the only one like that for Yume was when Kaname told Yuuki about his past. I've also heard that Zeki has the most volume cliffhangers and double page spreads in the manga itself, but I haven't checked to confirm myself lol.
And then there's just obvious stuff: Yuuki starts the manga "in love" with Kaname but the more she sees of his "real" self or the darker sides of him, the more their relationship regresses, the less she likes what she's seeing. With Zero, though, the more she uncovered about his life and his personality, the closer they became and the more her feelings grew. I mean, chapter one Yuuki said she didn't understand Zero because he wouldn't let her in. That eventually progresses to her saying in 79 that she "knows Zero so well."
With Kaname, the more she uncovers about him, the less she understands. For ten years Kaname visited her and was a part of her life; she awakens and regains five years worth of memories of him as her brother. On top of that, they live together in close quarters for a year. And even after literally experiencing his memories in his blood, she still says she doesn't understand him.
There's also the comparison of the Zeki bites vs the Yume ones. Yume bites have only been for feeding or for plot purposes, like Yuuki seeing the "monster" in Kaname's blood the first time she feeds, or seeing him collapsed on the ground with the broken mirror. Zeki bites are drawn out and focus on the emotion: Yuuki asking Zero what her blood tastes like, thinking how she should be afraid but she's not, thinking about how she can't look away from his eyes, Zero's blood having a calming effect on her, etc. Their bites actually have an intimate connection. And Yuuki wasn't exactly stopping to smell the roses when she went to the Kuran Mansion for the first time since leaving it either. She goes through it quickly and tells Zero later that it's okay because there's not only good memories there. The only thing she reflected on was how Aidou-dono used to be in charge of the cleaning. I mean, that's supposed to be her "home" with her "fiancee" and she can't reflect on the times they were together? o_O With Yuuki, there's so much focus on Zero and so little on Kaname. There's substance in Zeki.

LOL don't worry about it, I don't mind if your replies aren't long :P I just naturally type a lot by habit. Yeah, I prefer the Kaname-death ending too. Not because I hate him and want him to die, but because:
1) he can be reunited with the Ancestress then (in "spirit")
2) he has had two chances at life now, and both failed miserably - I think a third would be unfair considering all that he's done. Aidou-dono barely had one chance at life and it was taken from him by Kaname. Why should Kaname get a third?
3) seriously, he's too powerful LOL
Plus, it's just cruel to make him live while Yuuki loves someone else more. He'd truly end up like Rido then, forced to watch the girl he loves be with another man and question why he wasn't good enough. Literally, not good enough, since Yuuki experienced living with him, being with him, and to still choose someone else... kind of a blow to the ego.
Yes, I think this ship will stay afloat xD If you look at the entirety of VK, the manga revolves around Zeki and Kaname - not Zeki and Yume, or Yume and Kaname. Even the manga summaries that they have in the official volumes, mostly revolve around Zeki. Including most of the Yume volumes in arc two, ROFL.
Oh, and here's some things you might find interesting that are Zeki-related :D

First one is the recap Lala gave for chapter 87 and the second one is about the japanese word Yuuki used to call Zero "handsome/cool/attractive" (depending on which translation you read)

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it :D I unfortunately had to cut a bit out of my post since it exceeded the character limit for Mangafox, but I originally had something about how there's a difference between stopping Kaname and saving him. Yuuki's decision to turn Kaname human isn't because she's trying to keep him alive, as some fans are romanticizing it as - it's because of what Zero said to her in the very same chapter. And that's how it will be nearly impossible to stop Kaname unless he wants to be stopped. In other words, until he's accomplished his goal, they can't do anything.
I don't think the spell would work on Kaname even if Yuuki was somehow successful, considering he's her ancestor and he's got lots of power from devouring purebloods. But for arguments sake, let's say she is successful. She's literally turning Kaname into easy prey. The hunter's might leave him alone once he's human, but you can guarantee that the vampires won't. Yuuki is just rendering his powers useless the only way she knows how. She was erasing Zero's memories of her, meaning if the truth behind her actions was that she loves Kaname and she's trying to save him from himself, she could have easily told him that even if it was painful. He wouldn't remember. Instead, she just said this is the only way to stop Kaname. Considering she agreed with Zero's words about how they can't stop him unless Kaname wants to be stopped, I think her intentions couldn't be more obvious. Killing herself to make Kaname powerless is like leading him to the slaughterhouse. That's how desperate she is, that she'd even consider that.
So I disagree with anyone who thinks her wanting to turn Kaname into a human over staying to be with Zero means she loves Kaname more. It's about duty and stopping there from being any more victims, not her happiness. She's attempting to be selfless, though she's also being selfish at the same time. :P
One of my friends pointed out the Romeo and Juliet thing to me with the last chapter's balcony scenes, so I refreshed my memory on the play to do that section of the post xD It really is very similar. And I agree, the chocolate thing was huge. I didn't elaborate on it in the post, but it's also interesting that Zero is the one who gave Kaname Yuuki's chocolate - and Zero is also the one who told Yuuki to be with Kaname because he shared the same lifespan as her. Yuuki gave Zero her chocolate herself, and (in my opinion at least) he's the one she wants to be with/has chosen.
I think a lot of fans believe that Kaname's death has been so overly foreshadowed that it's too obvious and can't happen. Others think it'll happen, but Yuuki will also die, thus the "tragic ending," because they'll die together. Or something. The thing is, Shizuka said that to Kaname just because he devoured her life. And he's been devouring so much more since then - so what kind of fate can he expect to have now? Honestly, he's too powerful to be left alone, and he's too powerful to be turnedinto a human. Firstly, there'd still be other purebloods, and all they'd have to do is turn him back into a vampire like he did with Yuuki. And we have no idea if he'd still have that power boost or not. Secondly, if Yuuki was going insane as a human, Kaname certainly would. He's screwed no matter what ending he has.

I got part of my thoughts up about this chapter but nothing too LT-centric yet, I'm working on a bigger post for another forum I go to so I might just share that one instead once it's finished.

If you like reading my posts, I do more in-depth ones on other forums :P

Zeki forum: http://s13.zetaboards.com/Zekirum/index/
(I'm underthesamesky on those sites)
And also MangaFox: http://forums.mangafox.me/search.php?do=finduser&userid=904849&contenttype=vBForum_Post&showposts=1
There's a lot of "shoujo cliches" that foreshadow Yuuki being with Zero too, like her giving both Zero and Kaname chocolate. It was the first year that she'd ever given any boy chocolate, and she chose to do that for both Kaname AND Zero, even though Zero already received a gift from her. Plus, she gave him the only homemade chocolate that turned out right, and gave Kaname storebought chocolate. She was also willing to cross the line into Zero's world by offering him her blood, even though she thought that line was impossible to cross when it came to Kaname. And that was before realizing Kaname was a pureblood. I also personally believe Kaname was in love with the Ancestress, and there's a lot of similarities between their relationship and Zeki.
I don't think there'll be another romantic Yume scene, at best it'll be one-sided like it has been (i.e. Kaname touching her face and Yuuki pulling back to just take another swing at him, lol) I think Yuuki's line could either be repeating "I belong to Kaname," (which in the original Japanese text was very negative) or "but I can't be with him," which could simply tie in to how she seems like she intends to sacrifice herself.
Yuuki backtracked somewhat after cutting her hair, but I don't think anything she's said or done since then has been romantic or "good" for Yume either. I think she was just holding on to that hope that she could stop Kaname with words, since he was still fighting her halfheartedly, and by 85 she realized that wasn't possible anymore.

Oh, I don't mean romantic Yume scenes! D: I just mean Yume scenes in general, a lot of panels dedicated to Yuuki and Kaname. Though I don't think Kaname cares much about what Yuuki does with Zero anymore, he did show up at a convenient time with Yuuki finally identifying her feelings for Zero clearly. For Yuuki's character to not suffer any more damage, and the plot as well, she really needs to define what her feelings for Kaname are now and if they're greater or less than her feelings for Zero. Personally, I feel her feelings for Zero are greater, since she admitted in 87 that she knows what it's like to be sated and we know she wasn't sated by Kaname.
Honestly though I'm torn between thinking this chapter will wrap up one side of the LT, and thinking that Kaname just won't give Yuuki that chance because of whatever he showed up to do. So there could be "Yume scenes" (i.e. Kaname and Yuuki talking, or flashbacks) or it could just jump straight into the action. I'm fairly certain that any romantic Yume scenes are done now - the little we've had in the past few chapters were pretty weak as it is and mostly from Kaname's side. I mean, even the flashback Yuuki had when she cut her hair was weak. A tiny little panel of Kaname touching and smelling a strand of her hair, and neither of their expressions shown. Considering the symbolism of a girl cutting her hair, and considering her word choice (thrown the weights/burden away) that was pretty bad.

underthesamesky | 11-08-12, 12:09 PM
Kaname also treated her like a child more so, because of it being in his nature to be overprotective of her and treat her like a glass doll. I think that was part of why I could never get into that ship as well, I mean Zero is also protective of Yuuki but in a different way. He acts as her knight (goes with her, supports her) and Kaname acts like her keeper (erases her memory, tries to keep her from danger even if she'll hate him). Zero kind of confronts the danger with Yuuki and makes sure she's safe that way, and Kaname's just like, let's run away together! I think that's part of why Yuuki's more herself around Zero and why it comes easier, because he treats her like an equal or at least gives her the chance to try and be one.
I'm really excited for the new chapter, though we'll probably get a lot of Yume scenes since I'm hoping the LT gets wrapped up so we can focus on the plot again.

Aww you're welcome, glad I could help :P This month was definitely a chapter for us <3 I had to reread the series after that, just to get the full emotional payoff from 87 xD It was such an emotional chapter, and so much happened development-wise for Zeki. I'm really hoping this means the LT is coming to a close and Yuuki will focus on the issue at hand (i.e. Kaname killing purebloods) AND resolving her issues with whichever male she chooses.
I love how lighthearted Zero was in this month's chapter! And this scene kind of paralleled the Yume dance from arc one, when they were out on the balcony as well, but I think we definitely got the better scene of the two ;P
