I mean, I have no idea why you'd think that, it gave us an insight into the mindsets of the characters...just like it was supposed to...not sure how it did a bad job of this...
I mean, they weren't just reiterating how depressed they were, lol. The inner monologues were used to give us an insight into their psyche, as NGE was a show about psychoanalysis.
You forget that hardcore fans will inevitably try to find ways to be satisfied with whatever's given to them. It's what Tokyo Ghoul fans did when the manga ended and before Tokyo Ghoul:re came out.
I've actually watched Rebellion, and I did rather enjoy it... but not for the reasons you enjoyed it. To me, the writing was just so gut-wrenchingly appalling. It's like SHAFT was basically masturbating in front of my face with their big budget for the first half and then the second half was more along the lines of fan-fiction similar to Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa. I also don't care much for how Homura didn't give Madoka the context for when she asked the question and basically trapped Madoka in that fake world of hers and was all like "Madoka's gonna come back someday and kill me for this shit."
The main reason why I enjoyed it was more or less in a vein similar to the way I enjoy bad movies like The Room, Birdemic, and Battlefield Earth. It made for great snark bait with friends, but it's about the same as Kuroshitsuji II to me. It was an unnecessary sequel of the worst kind: the kind that just shits all over what fans have come to know and love about Madoka as a whole.
The fact that SHAFT and Aniplex basically made it in such a way where it's implied that more story will come pisses me off to no end because of the fact that it's so obvious that they're making too much money with the franchise to quit with that movie alone. I didn't like the ending of the TV series, but at least I can say that it had a proper ending that most (if not all) fans found satisfying. Rebellion basically takes that ending and shits all over it for no reason other than pure profit (don't even get me started on the downright appalling merchandise of NSFW hug pillows and posters of Madoka, Homura, et al scantily clad in yuri poses).
If the TV series ended in such a way like Evangelion did because of budgetary restraints or because the networks had a problem with the TV series' ending and forced alterations, I could be a little more forgiving. Unfortunately, that's not the case whatsoever. I'm not the biggest fan of End of Evangelion, but at least I can say that it was necessary. Rebellion on the other hand? It's about as necessary as Kuroshitsuji II or The Conqueror of Shamballa.
I have written a review of Rebellion, but it's not quite... shall we say, up to par with my standards? I may re-watch Rebellion in the future and then re-review it but for now, I think I'll be sticking with what I have.
Thanks. At any rate, I can't enjoy Madoka Magica anymore because I've spent too much time looking into it. Even if I try to "turn my brain off" as the old adage goes, I can't because all I can see is well... what I've just said in my review.
Well, since you gave your thoughts on Evangelion, I think it's high time I gave you my thoughts on Madoka Magica. Here you go. I encourage you to read the entire thing. http://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=173669
I hate being "Captain Obvious" but I know this is your opinion. I didn't mean to sound harsh but I'm tired of seeing almost half of the reviews calling NGE a bad anime.
Ah but you're mistaken. NGE is a brilliantly written story. Flawed, but great nonetheless. I don't know if you have watched End of Evangelion but I don't see it on your list and you should watch it else the story is incomplete and it fills a lot of holes.

I was really hoping for Rebellion to be like End of Evangelion in the sense that it's just one gigantic middle finger to the audience. Well, I mean it is but not like EoE actually turned out. Speaking of which, I think you might like this:
