maybe you should have another look at the picture that inspired the metaphor. the bear attacked first, and the decisive evidence is the wound on the man's chest.

see, the bear represents the many obstacles you face in life. to overcome them, your only option is to box them.
the problem, in my opinion, is it's sort of a pessimistic outlook. it suggests that you cannot rely on anyone but yourself, ie all you can use to defeat the bear are your own fists.
