Forbidden Planet is a comic book store. They have a section for manga upstairs but it's small in comparison to their regular comics on the first floor.
Imagine Anime has a lot of anime related things toys, dvds, costumes, etc.
They're both in manhattan yes. Just google their names for more info on them/to get their website

I did. Went site seeing. Hit up a couple of anime/manga spots like Forbidden Planet and Imagine Anime. It was good. Wish I was there a little longer.

Since the anime follows the manga quite closely, starting either with reading or watching it is fine. I would suggest reading it first though, then watching it because seeing it animated is much more fun and hilarious.
