How I rate my anime:
Firstly, I rate by genre. What were the director's intentions? Was it aimed at young teens, adults, or children? Was it meant for a male or female audience - or both? Was it supposed to be romance, comedy, drama, s-o-l, ecchi, or hentai? Yes, I've sampled anime in all genres. Of course, I have my favorites. I love almost everything sci-fi but not big on stories about piloting mechs. I appreciate many types of comedy, especially satire, parody, and subtlety, though I also love situational gags. I'm also a hopeless romantic. When I watch anime (or any medium), I want to be entertained. That's what this stuff is for. I like my shows intelligent, but I don't mind over-the-top action I can only get from made up universes. So, I liked HOTD as much as I liked Kino's Travels. They were of course very different, but per the artist's intentions, they did what they meant to do. And, above all, they held my attention. I do love philosophy, psychological, and dementia, quite possibly the most of all genres, and you'll find that I tend to rate those the highest. But, I love horror, yaoi, and adventure as well. Studio 4C, Madhouse, Kon, Oshii, Rintaro, Watanabe... I could go on, but I'll stop here. The only genres I don't get into are those that
bore me, which mainly consist of true slice of life, cliche school life anime, shows centered around moe, and random shows that are truly pointless.
10 - I have nothing bad to say about it & it had some kind of message, moral, or philosophy.
09 - It was awesome, but something was off about it.
08 - It had some minor flaws, but a high enjoyment factor.
07 - I enjoyed it, but there were many/major flaws.
06 - It was okay. I don't regret the watch, but I wouldn't recommend it.
05 - Almost dropped it, but something had to be interesting enough for me to half-assed pay attention to it.
04 & Below - Either I was really bored or it was really short. Usually both. These ratings are just levels of "how bad".
*Sometimes I give extra points (up or down) for special things in anime. Ex: Kimi Ni Todoke 1 could have gotten a 10 if they put a kiss in it. It could have been perfect, lol. Doesn't matter whether it's in the manga or not, or if there was a sequel planned... because I believe that all adaptations take on their own life when they are interpreted. KnT 2 got a 9/10 also, but that was because it just didn't have the magic of the first season for whatever reason.
*If I dropped something, it's either because it was really annoying or because I wasn't in the mood for it... in which case I might end up trying it again far down the road sometime.
How I rate manga:
I'm a little more forgiving with manga, maybe because I'm not into it as much. If it gets me to read it, then it's good imo, and I only need to figure out the level. The main stuff I read is Yaoi, Shoujo, and Josei... in that order, though that's not all I'll like of course. The ratings are based on enjoyment & art. And, I'm probably quicker to drop one because I don't research them like I do my anime.
