I remember my first taste of Adachi being the first episode of Cross Game when it first aired. Immediately impressed that it had the gall to do something so bold in only the first episode.....only to not watch the rest of the series years later :/

Slow Step was more of a proper introduction to his style, but I found it pretty bad, personally.

It wasn't until I watched Touch that I finally 'got it' with his humor and style. I agree that Takahashi has similar influences and storylines, only hers are more silly and vibrant. Adachi's storytelling is more down-to-earth and subtle; after being frustrated with Touch on my first viewing. That part of him hit me and I understood it much better. Now I consider Touch to be top 10 material for me.

He still has some of Takashi's flaws, such as dragging things out a bit longer than necessary and having too much of the same character designs(He draws about 4 different faces in total, and that's still pushing it). But what he does have going for him is memorability. His stories always have this nostalgic tone to them that always make them very appealing. And when he does get on a roll, there is some good character development with an awesome pay-off by the end of the story.

I can proudly say I enjoy his works, and look forward to reading more of them soon. Touch is required reading/viewing for those who want a good baseball rom-com-drama. Cross Game is also great, but...not as much of a winner in my book.

I find his style kinda similar to Rumiko Takahashi's early days, especially when she was drafting Maison Ikkoku, they have similar panel layout and humour. That said, Touch, is definitely his magnum opus. Cross Game may have been a more polished version but it lacked the charm (and TATSUYA UESUGI!) that made Touch such a larger than life title. One of my favorite mangaka and if he still has the skills to crank out quality titles 30 years from now like the aforementioned Cross Game, then fuck, I'm looking forward to his next work.
