The main characters are both girls who are some sort of genuises in the sport they play. The stories are similar in that they recount the trials the girls go through getting to the top. In Shion no Ou it's the boardgame called shogi. In Saki it's mahjong. In both manga, the protagonists are playing the game to get to someone from their past.

Both are about japanese boardgames. Shion no Ou is a much more serious series though.
