Zankoku na Kami ga Shihai Suru. "A Cruel God Reigns," in English.

Some call this a "Boys' Love" series. But that's a lie. Because there is no love. This is not a fluffy bunny shounen-ai or yaoi. This is a chilling, horrifyingly realistic story of long-term sexual abuse. It is the life inside a nightmare.

Never has my blood boiled so much in anger while reading a manga. Greg, the man who came from abroad to marry Jeremy's widowed mother isn't just interested in her. He's also interested in Jeremy. A two-for-the-price-of-one marriage. He says he loves read more

I've been itching to write this for a long time by now.

Story 10/10
Zankoku na Kami ga Shihai Suru is a catching story about a high school boy trying to cope with his stepfather regularly abusing him. He's suffering, running away, crying and losing it, then he faces it and solves his problem only to find another one. He is constantly giving up and trying to vanish, then being forced to live and try again.
It's not 'BL' as such, but certainly a piece full of love, desire, overlooking, suffering and regret.

Art 8/10
This manga started in 1993. That is a year before I was even read more

This is one of the earliest BL mangas out there, I believe, and you can definitely see the striking differences between the shounen-ai emerging 30 years ago compared to today. The visuals especially are different. Boys look like boys (kind of. Still have bambi eyes, still hairless. And Ian, who appears a bit later, is a definite bishonen.) There is a nice amount background and not a lot of skimping on the characters' details.

What struck me most about this manga was how disturbingly realistic it is. The abused protagonist is not a helpless creature. He's just a normal boy with normal friends and a normal read more

Vulnerabilities are like glass threads. Communicating, the desire to understand one another- there's always a risk of breaking. The world is filled with people in the process of breaking. If you want to go through life without getting hurt, the only option is isolation. If its one or the other, in order not to break and not be broken, is choosing isolation equal to death? If so, is death something to be so afraid of in the first place?

Maybe there's someone out there who doesn't fear death, in that vein, isolation. We don't really hear from them, so they seemingly don't exist. Surely they exist. read more

Manga: Bitter Virgin
This is essentially like a male version of Bitter Virgin, it is about a normal boy who is raped by his pedophile step-father. It is not graphic sexually and this is a really good story, but be warned about the realness of this before you read it. It is not yaoi, or BL - it is not about love, but about someone dealing with being raped and abused by someone who has power over them, and his feelings of insanity because of what is happening to him. It is psychologically deep going into how abuse breaks a person's psyche and  read more

Manga: Install
They both deal with violent MxM rape and the mental consequences for the victims. Install is a (hard to find) one-shot by Chi-Ran while Zankoku na Kami ga Shihai Suru (A cruel god reigns) is over 84 chapters long (so far) and written by Hagio, Moto.

The artwork in Zankoku is definitely older when compared to that of Install, but as the series progresses it starts to improve. It never really becomes "modern", but things look less rough and over time the story distracts you from the dated drawing style.

Manga: Bronze: Zetsuai Since 1989
Hagio Moto's A Cruel God Reigns (aka. Zankoku Na Kami Ga Shihai Suru) was most likely influenced by what was called yaoi's "most major work" --Bronze: Zetsuai. Both of them are from late 80s/early 90s, and they contain semi-insane characters, a controversial plot, explicit sexual abuse, and are angsty, violent, bloody, and horrifying. The dark and grim stories are -extremely- difficult to read and enjoy. There are some clear differences however: Zetsuai has some "nice"r moments, along with lots of melodrama, whereas A Cruel God Reigns has none, and is a lot more refined as a whole.

Manga: Bokura no Hentai
- have male characters who have been sexually assaulted by other men
- familial abuse
- dark tone and subject matter
- psychologically damaged characters
- the art becomes 'trippy' when the characters have breaks in their psyches
-love triangle
- b.l : yaoi/ shounen ai
- both mangas have more bisexual characters than gay characters.

Manga: Sakura-gari
Tragic and disturbing stories about a boy who is sexually abused by someone he should have been able to trust. He wants to run away, but his abuser threatens to harm a family member if he does. Rather than try to be BL fluff, these stories are about the pain, shame, and fear engendered by this kind of situation. Zankoku feels more realistic, and is also less explicit. It also shows how a victim's sense of intimacy can be shattered by abuse.

Manga: Shiiku Gakari Rika
Psychological, angsty BL titles that contain rape, incest, bullying and violence. Emotional, wonderful reads.

Shiiku Gakari Rika (and its prequel Tetsu x Rika - which was published later) is heavier on the violence, whereas Zankoku~ is in a way more developed plot- and character-wise due to its length and it actually reaching a conclusion, unlike Shiiku Gakari Rika which was unfortunately left unfinished by the mangaka.
