The character interaction reminded me strongly of Tenchi. The anime came out at about the same time, and were two of the series that got me interested in anime 20 years ago.

the harems in these 2 shows have the female characters around the male lead fight for him and as the show progress the male lead gains power. also the females are always fight to prove themselves the best for the male lead
