SynopsisWhen Wischtech threatened to invade the fiefs of Szaalanden, the Emperor dispatched fourteen youths. Of these, the Seven Heroes halted the invasion to herald a time of prosperity while the four Lances of Betrayal were supposedly defeated.
Two decades later, the Lances of Betrayal have reappeared and formed a bandit militia near the frontier fief Gormbark. A man with the black sword and a scar over his left eye slays an entire troop of that militia. He is identified as a boy, Kóinzell, and becomes as much an object of fear as of hope even as his own past, motivations, and purpose are a mystery to those he meets in his travel. Ubel Blatt is a mature seinen action adventure series that brings the usual story of one main character seeking revenge after a near death experience two decades ago. However despite the similarity, Ubel Blatt is a seinen-based series that actually does fairly well for itself.
When the story begins, we are introduced to the main character named Koinzell who falls upon the goal of seeking revenge. Twenty years ago, Koinzell (once known as Ascheriit) served with fourteen lancers to prevent an invasion from Wischtech. During the event, four of the lancers were successful in preventing the invasion. However in the aftermath of their success, seven lancers (who were cowards during the invasion) attack the four lancers to seize the glory of their accomplishment. Journeying with a few allies, Koinzell stops at nothing until his goal is accomplished by defeating the seven lancers who betrayed him.
For the characters, Koinzell is your typical male protaganist that seeks revenge as his important goal and brings out the usual trait of being a powerful warrior. Along with his traits, readers will also learn about his background as pieces of Koinzell's past start to come up in Ubel Blatt. While the story centers on Koinzell seeking his revenge, readers will also be presented by some interesting backgrounds on the seven lancers Koinzell is after. Other supporting characters fulfill interesting roles but nothing that special should come up much to the audience.
As for the artwork, it is consider above average in most of its panels. The basic character designs are mainly average at best in certain panels. Usually the character designs are at their best when illustrations are used to highlight the dark situations that take place in Ubel Blatt. The background designs and action sequences also provide some decent results in its panels.
Along with the many bloody action sequences, readers are also provided with an fine assortment of fanservice and ecchi scenes that take place in the manga. Even though this is an seinen-based series that stands out as unoriginal in some of its results, Ubel Blatt is still a manga worth checking out for certain readers. However due to the mature themes that take place in this series, I can only recommend this manga to certain readers that are able to handle the material.
*Be warned though, there is some sexual content in this manga.

Ubel Blatt is essentially a "newer" version of Berserk. It shares many general themes with Berserk, such as a dark fantasy setting, swordfighting, sex and the theme of a lone hero betrayed by his friends and is out to get revenge. However, the mangaka of Ubel Blatt is no Miura; the art is of a more typical manga style than the extremely detailed drawings you'll find in Berserk. Consequently, the character design looks similarly generic.
This difference is rather apparent when you compare Koinzell, the main character who looks like a scarred version of Link and is indeed an Elf/Fairy thing, to Guts who is pretty much the complete opposite with his massive frame, huge sword and chisel-jawed features. There is also some silliness with special attacks being named (another common anime/manga trope) unlike Berserk, where Guts just sort of cuts everything to pieces.
That being said, we all know that Berserk has a rather lengthy interval between releases. Ubel Blatt is more of the dark fantasy setting with similar themes of hopelessness and while it's not as good as its inspiration, it still makes for an enjoyable read.
Another seinen with a sword-wielding character with a flashback-seen tragic past. This main character is stuck in a small elf-like body, but that doesn't stop him from being more sexually active than guts. Crazy violence and awesome
Two dark action adventure series that feature both male protaganists seeking revenge as an important goal. Both series provide an interesting journey of different encounters for both male leads.

Ubel Blatt is about a man seeking revenge against those who have destroyed his life and forced him to take a new body similar to how Kyo seeks revenge against Kyoshiro
