Ah, rom-coms... There's no end to them. You finish one, another five appear. There are some of them which try to show us something different, and those which are completely unoriginal and are based on thousands of cliches and themes. And 'Otomari Honey' is definitely one of them.
Story: 5
Story... There's a story? Yeah, but extremely episodic. Every chapter tells us another story, with Yukino and Matsuda being the main characters, and each of them is filled with cliches and standard rom-com themes - visit to the hot spring, summer festival, Romeo and Juliet play... We've seen it at least hundred times before.
The only thing which
is different from another comedies is that the main characters live together (with some 3 other girls, additionaly). But it doesn't change much, because most of the story takes place outside of home - mainly in school.
Not to mention there's quite a lot fan-service. Author focuses not on typical panty-shots, but on Yukino's bust. Practically the whole ecchi side of manga revolves around breasts.
Art: 6
The art is average. Author really tries hard to make Yukino look as attractive as possible, and he makes a good job. Too bad he seems not to care about the other characters, which are drawn quite sloppy. Sometimes, in important scenes, Matsuda is also drawn well, but not always.
Detailed backgrounds don't appear very often, there is much more one-colored ones.
Every chapter begins with a full-colored page, and I must say they look really nice. Too bad the whole manga doesn't look close to them.
Character: 5
Story revolves around Yukino and Matsuda. Yukino is a president of Matsuda's class and she's madly in love with him. As one might guess, she's too shy to confess to him, which leads to many misunderstanding and funny (?) situations. There's not much to say about her - she's quite clumsy and... that's about it. Author didn't give Yukino much personality, her role is limited to two things: providing fan-service and trying to get close to Matsuda.
Matsuda, of course, is in love with Yukino, but cannot bring himself to confess to her. How original!
Matsuda's personality is only a bit more developed than Yukino's - he's very caring and he cannot say 'no' when somebody asks him for a favour. That's why he ended up with 4 girls in his room (sounds like a harem, huh?).
He's also reliable, and a bit perverted - but only as much as every teenage guy.
Enjoyment: 6
As I said before, story is completely predictable and unoriginal. You can't deny it. But stil... It's a solid romantic comedy. There's almost everything you'd expect from such a title. And the story itself can be quite funny sometimes.
Overall: 6
This manga is average. Nothing is bad here, nothing to hate here, but it isn't really good in any aspect. It's just a typical rom-com like many others here. If you are a fan of the genre, you might as well try it out, in any other case 'Otomari Honey' will be boring to you. read more
