Jun 9, 200810 of ? chapters read 4 of 4 people found this review helpful Japan Ai is a cute travel graphic novel that chronicles the author's adventures in Japan.
Art: Aimee Steinberger is a professional animator, and it shows. Her art is crisp and (of course!) very cute. She has her own style (rather than trying to copy "manga style" as some OEL artists do), which is a definite plus in my book. The art is detailed when it needs to be, and quite easy on the eyes (assuming you like cute as much as I do). Also, there are pretty color illus...trations scattered throughout.
Story/Character: Since this is basically a non-fiction account of a trip (just in drawings rather than photos), these categories are hard to rate. As far as content goes, however, Japan Ai's is pretty solid. Steinberger's story-telling style is detailed but easy to follow and entertaining to read. I wouldn't recommend it for a travel guide exactly, but it is packed with information about places to go and things to do (along with a handy list in the back), and I think it would make a great supplement to a beefier guide.
Enjoyment: The book made me nostalgic for my own time in Japan (and wishing that I could go back and do some of the things Steinberger did!). Steinberger has enough otaku references to make a connection with anime fans, but I think she's clear enough that a non-fan wouldn't be completely lost. To sum it up, I really enjoyed reading.
I'm not the biggest supporter of OEL out there, but this book shows that it can be done well. Nice art and good narration make this worth checking out for anyone interested in what a visit to Japan might be like. read more
