Synopsis

Elementary school student Shouya Ishida is creeped out when Shouko Nishimiya, a meek girl born with impaired hearing, transfers into his class. Following her arrival, Shouya and his friends begin to torment Shouko, making her the hapless target of ridicule and assault. The constant bullying turns school into a living hell for Shouko, where even the teachers remain indifferent to the situation.

Koe no Katachi tells the heartbreaking story of Shouko falling victim to bullying, but also one of hope, remorse, and redemption.

Background

Although Koe no Katachi won the 80th Weekly Shounen Magazine Newbie Best Mangaka Award in 2008, its content made it difficult for publication in any manga magazine. It was published—after months of legal dispute—in the February issue of Bessatsu Shounen Magazine in 2011, where it got first place in the questionnaires. As a result, Yoshitoki Ooima's debut became the manga version of Mardock Scramble.

The one-shot was re-published in the 12th issue of the 2013 Weekly Shounen Magazine.

Welp I read only a one shot, there is a bigger story with more chapters.

Anyways nothing much to say here, its a test that was pass with flying colors - short, simple, effective and has a strong message behind it.

Its a one shot about the importance of communication. Very easy easy read, feels almost plain and too simple, yet conveys a pretty strong and reasonable message behind it.

I give it 9/10 because it doesn`t have some sort of hook, probably lacks some authentic characters or a story, its very simple yet effective, you know its like a glass of water ...

The story was in my opinion very realistic (except the nature of shocko) and it was amazing that this story gave me plenty of 'feelings' along reading it.
The story seeemed so realistic to me because it was way to familiar to my own life. It could've actually been a story about me but then without all the girls :(. The way karma can be such a b!ch is presented great in the story. The story shoqws how easy it is to bully someone and how such a false sense of greatness it gives you. This is a socially awkward, hard to read (emotionally), yet so satisfying to get through, tear jerking manga. There is a heavy atmosphere of social awkwardness and social uncertainty throughout the manga. Watching characters deal with these situations, evokes powerful emotions from situations forgotten by memory but remembered by the heart.
