SynopsisWith the space program attempting to travel to Mars, 21st century scientists were tasked with warming up the planet so that humans could survive on its surface. They came up with an efficient and cost effective plan of sending cockroaches and mold to the surface so that the mold would absorb the sunlight and the insect corpses would serve as a food source for the mold.
It is now the year 2577 and the first manned ship to Mars has landed on the planet and the six crew members are ready for their mission. But what they find are giant mutated humanoid cockroaches with incredible physical strength. The crew members are easily wiped out, but not before sending a transmission back to Earth. Now, humanity will send elite warriors to exterminate the mutated bugs and claim back Mars.

omg this manga. this manga is just... wow... talk about despair-inducing.
in a nutshell, the manga is about human-sized cockroaches who were sent to live on mars so that humans could colonize it in 500 years but the humans definitely didn't plan for them to be human-sized and... evolve to be intelligent as well. so, if you dislike cockroaches, insects, bugs, anything like that in general -- AND THE GORE -- well, i recommend that you should not read the manga because lord, there's so many references to bugs.
the suspense is so great and i love how the art is so action-oriented -- it just keeps you reading and reading, and there's never a moment to stop for a rest (except in flashbacks) so it really highlights the action drama of this manga. since i'm reading just four volumes (about thirty-six chapters out so far), i really want the manga to delve more deeply into the story rather than just action.
there IS some story, mainly characterization and the secret behind the project. there are definitely women in this manga, which is great, but also not so great because they're usually the ones to be killed first (save for a few). however, there's not much character development that extend beyond just a few chapters because (almost) EVERYONE DIES. it's a type of human survival manga, except it's in an environment that is not the earth.
art is pretty good, extremely macho if i do say myself (maybe it's inspired by rob liefeld's artworks?) and the drawings of the cockroaches are very uniform yet unique, at least distinguished from the humans. character design is done really well.
tbqh i just want this manga to reveal the answers to the mysteries and to maybe slow down with a respite from the violence that's going on and I WANT EVERYONE TO HAVE HAPPY ENDINGS (except cockroaches) but most of all i just want this manga to go at least /somewhere/ that's not just fighting. read more
All I can say is this is Attack on Titan 2.0 It can (not) get worse. This some deformed child of Gantz and Attack on Titan and inferior in every way. This is one those manga's where it thinks violence equal maturity ( which is not how maturity work by the way) and is completely skippable if you read any of the other titles I just mentioned.
Well, where should we start? Well Earth population is getting out of hand and the people of earth want to colonize Mars. So Earth government decided to send roaches and some specail moss to Mars to quote on quote "terraform" it, hence the title. So the manga starts 400 years after they send the roaches and mosses and the send their first group of explorers to Mars to check it out and now Mars is human friendly now. Wait, I going to stop you right there story because there is no way Mars can transform that fast. It took over 100 million years for Earth atmosphere to be habitable to the simplest of life forms and we had the help of astroids and volcanos. So there is no way that Mars can be habital under a millenium with just roaches and moss. Well, anyways Earth sends a spaceship to Mars to check out the planet. However, they are attacked by a bunch of huge, humanoid roaches attack them... Hold it story, there is a million of thing wrong with this that defies all logic, genetics, physics, and plain old common sense but let move on because I don't want drag this review too long. So the space ship lands and this is suppose to introduce the character. Well, suppose to. Instead we get a bunch of redshirts dieing without giving any reason to care and the guns they brought with them weren't affective against the roaches ( Wait, if guns are ineffective against them, how did.... you know what forget it). So now some time later, Earth sends another group, but this time armed with special genes to make them have insect powers.( not going to question that) So, is it finally time to introduce the character? Nope, just another group of redshirts getting slaughterd. So much for insect power, the whole group get annialated in the spand of an hour or so and the remaining stragaler return to earth. Then we finally get introduce to our main cast after those two arcs which could of been fullfleged stories on their own. I going to stop right there because if I continue any further I'll be here forever. As you can see, the story is riddled with mountain size plot holes that are really obvious. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if the manga was more self aware of itself like Jojo's or Bastard. But nope, Terra Formers even takes it self more seriously than Berserk thinking its a "deep" and "mature" story. Well I'll tell you this Terra Formers, it takes much more than mindless violence and a psydo intellectual backdrop to be mature.
This is by far the worst part of this manga thus far. People say that Attack on Titan had bad character, they would rip their eyes out when they read Terra Formers. First, let me clarify that there is nothing wrong with shock factor ( or a lot of character deaths) in fact, many shows like One Piece and Naruto would be better if there was more character deaths. But the problem is having too many characters death and killing them off too quickly. This is the gapping hole in Terra Former. Most of the time, many characters don't get basic characterization and killed off for the sake of shocking the the read. In my case, I don't give a damn about a character I don't know anything about gets killed. And the characters that do stay around and are give character are all boring and generic. I you don't believe me, try describing the characters without describing what the look like, what they wear, and what role they play.
The art is alright I guess. Let me list some negatives and positives :
-Dark and Gritty
- Fairly realistic looking
- some nice action scenes
- Nice tech design
-Lots of reused character models
- Characters can be dispropational
-Roaches are complete copy and paste of one another
-Backgrounds are very mundane
I did not enjoy Terra Formers. I bad piece of slock that I don't recommend to anyone. Many people consider this like a new Gantz, while it doesn't even hold a candle compare to Gantz. I wouldn't even recommended if you looking for something so bad that its good.
Story: 3 ( even make less sense than Valrave)
Characters: 1 ( even worse than SAO.... somehow)
Art: 6 (Alright but nothing too special)
Enjoyment: 4 ( mostly consists of facepalming and snoring)
Recommendations: Gantz, Blue Gender, Berserk, Vinland Saga, Bastard, Battle Royal, Shingeki no Kyojin ( I'm no fan, but its way better than this), Claymore read more
Both deal with a team of people sent out to fight against an alien threat that is constantly becoming stronger. They both also constantly drive home the fact that "no one is safe." Lots of balls to the wall awesome moments as well.
Two good sci-fi titles in which a team of humans are sent to fight an alien threat equipped with technological enhancements to even out the odds.
Gory series with revolving casts, centered around an uphill battle between powered humans and strange beasts.
It has alot of similarities to gantz. The team's in both mangas get scifi weaponry and abilities to fight the enemies. Gantz is mysterious and random with the alien enemies while the Terraformar cockroaches are the primary enemies but with hints at mysterious origins. There is alot of gore in both mangas, alot of people are killed off, and the enemies try to adapt and overpower the humans as much as possible. In some aspects the artstyle feels similiar as well.
Humans fighting a losing battle against monsters, both titles contain a factor of mystery pertaining to the monsters, and there is plenty of gore and death.
-Humans fighting monsters for land
-In both humans are losing the battle
-Humans use unique ways to kill monsters and turn into monsters
-The monsters in both don't talk and are seemly mindless
-Both like attacking humans
-reasons for killing the humans is just to kill them so far
-Monsters change in weird ways later in show
-Both have the same feel to them
similar misterious story, with gore and death everywhere
