Some manga-fans may know Mohiro Kitoh as the creator of 'Bokurano', an manga-series that puts a spin to the Super Robot-genre so utterly dark and nihilistic that it makes Evangelion (the godfather of genre-deconstructions in the anime-medium) look pleasant.

Many of Kitoh's works are similarly disturbing and depressing; but Zansho is an exception. It's by no means lighthearted; but the 7 stories featured in this collection combine insightful obervations on themes like regret and loss with a more bittersweet outlook on life and people as opposed to the oppressing nihilsm that normally permeates his work.

I'll reffrain from extensively explaining each of the stories in read more

Manga: Koe no Katachi
The 4th story of Mohiro Kitoh's Short Stories and Koe no Katachi have incredibly similar plots. They are both psychological stories about a young boy who bullies a girl that has become the target of the class for different circumnstances. In both stories the situation is then reversed and the boy is betrayed by his friends and becomes a target of the bullying himself while the girl reaches out to help him. In both the main character ends up mentally growing up as a result of the girl and the events' influence.

Manga: Bokurano
Done by the same author, also a character-driven work with a strong narrative and insightful observations about the nastier aspects of life. Not as cynical as 'Bokurano' but no less intelligent.

Manga: Beautiful People
~ A compilation of several one-shots. Consist of stories dealing with love, life, death, fears etc. The books were inspiring, encouraging and even depressing at some point but that's how they make it great. Reading through it will somewhat left you with mixed feelings. Truly beautiful.
