It is by the same author and both are one shots. Boichi has some interesting stories, I must say.
Both are quite sad to a certain extent. Present is more of a tragedy while Hotel is a sad tale. Both stories are laid quite nicely.

Both deal with hope and despair over a long period of time involving many characters in a spiral of emotions and psychological conflicts.
Both are one-shots that offer hope rather than despair. Hotel looks at the destruction of the world while Island looks at this centralised little town that has become the world for a group of people isolated from the outside. Also, similar themes are presented in both manga.
These two manga are pretty different in that one is about the salvation of humanity after a near apocalypse (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou) and the other (Hotel) is all about the impending apocalypse. They are also different in that one has a violent take on nature reclaiming the earth and the other is about nature's quiet encroachment. Another difference is that Hotel is a one-shot while Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou ran for fourteen volumes. However, they're similar in that they are both about the ending of the world as we know it, are both profound and beautiful manga, and they both are told from the perspectives of non-humans.
